Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 28 reviews, most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. Families expressed serious concerns regarding unprofessional behavior, missed care plans, and severe issues with certain workers during assignments. Consumers also noted frustrating communication breakdowns and poor management responsiveness from the office staff when attempting to resolve problems. The minority of people were satisfied with the compassionate, dedicated, and reliable care provided by specific staff members. Reviewers additionally appreciated being able to speak directly with responsive local coordinators rather than navigating automated systems. Some consumers found that having consistent and polite helpers made a genuinely positive difference for their vulnerable relatives.

Similar Experiences with Home Instead

We live in Spokane, WA. Our entire experience with Home Instead was very depressing and sad. Their director contacted me personally and told me to take down the review I'd submitted on another site, even though every word of it was true and absolutely provable.

I had a family member being cared for…

I had a family member being cared for and entrusted with the care and compassion expected when hiring a caretaker for a loved one. The issue was there was no compassion and no care. it was disgusting to be quite honest how this person was treated. I'm sure there are some truly passionate caring people that work here, however I can only say that hoping I am right. The owner Amy is dismissive and apparently does not see the seriousness in potential elder abuse. Feeling betrayed and tricked when a company visited the home for a completely non caretaker reason, such as a cleaner, cable person etc has to take video to show you the neglect, it's hard to forgive that. please look elsewhere for your loved one unless you plan on being present 99% of the time your loved one is being " taken care of".

I am going to rate the review system a zero since no locations are given in the critiques . How do I know where the bad operators ARE if the location is not mentioned. ???? Maybe Tulsa is great and Ponca City is
terrible ???

Great Service and reliability

I Really enjoy the fact that I can speak to a person instead of a AI, this is a big plus for me.
I have in the past had 3 different agencies and " Home In Stead" surpasses all the other. The Staff is wonderful, helped and polite. All the care givers are consistent, and this is a: BIG PLUS" I Highly Recommend them to everyone

This agency was a nightmare for my family

This agency was a nightmare for my family. We had multiple untrained caregivers that were sent to care for my mom. They basically were "sitters" and refused to do cares. We set up a care plan which the agency did not follow. We knew one caregiver was stealing and snooping in private information so we set up a Ring camera and had everything on video. They still denied he did anything wrong. The caregiver stole my dads medications. Multiple more examples of the poor caregiving and inconsistent caregivers. Stay clear! The agency treats the family absolutely awful! They do not have high integrity.

Aids frequently cancel at the last minute

Aids frequently cancel at the last minute. My wife and I are both disabled. I schedule our grocery deliveries for when our aid is scheduled to be here, so they can get our groceries inside and in either the freezer or fridge. 3 out of the last 4 Sundays the aids didn't show up, and our grocery orders were left out in the sun to spoil. I am not amused.

They lie to you about your pay and then…

They lie to you about your pay and then say they don’t remember telling you what they said. If I could just give them negative they definitely deserve that. You never get to speak to a real person it’s all AI. They don’t care if you work in a place that has bedbugs. They don’t train you correctly. I can go on and on. Just if you’re thinking about working here run the other direction

Here's my resignation letter

Here's my resignation letter, copy pasted. Enjoy!
------ ------
I resign my position with Home Instead. You can't treat people like garbage and expect them to stay.

1. For my very first assignment, you tried putting me with a client who had an EXTREMELY deadly and contagious disease. You tried convincing me to go anyway since the disease was "in his lungs" and therefore not a threat. You are not a doctor and have no medical authority to make such a claim, and the evidence available online clearly contradicts this. The disease is just as contagious when it's in a person's lungs. I explained I could potentially kill the person I live with, and you still persisted that I should take this assignment despite that concern, and without acknowledging that concern.
.
I said once in a voicemail that I would like to cancel that assignment. I said again in an email that I would like to cancel the assignment. Despite saying this twice in two different ways, I still got a call that woke me up from a dead sleep the next morning where you continued telling me to go to take the assignment.
.
2. I told you several times about my issue with dogs. I carried a cane with me out to my car each time I left the office during the three day training. One of the staff asked why I do this, and I explained that it's to protect myself. The cane is a weapon I can use against dogs if I'm attacked. The matter has to be extremely important if a person carries a weapon expecting a possible confrontation. It's not something a person does casually. I explained the history -- again more than once -- of being attacked by dogs. My statements were acknowledged, and I was told "I'll put that in your file". So for my very first assignment, you put me with a client who has a "medium sized dog" (such as a pit bull.) After acknowledging my concern. And putting it in my file.
.
3. I was going into a dangerous situation on my first assignment, and was told I had an emergency number on the back of my name badge that I could call. I tried calling it, and it "didn't recognize my phone number", meaning I could not access the emergency line if I was in trouble.
.
4. I spent hours on my day off trying to fix an error in the tax forms, as well as filling out a series of other forms. For the future, you might consider trying to get all paperwork done and out of the way on the first day of the three day training, so by day three, if there are problems, you can fix them while the employee is at location, rather than sending a dozen emails pressuring them to fix such errors at home on their day off.
.
5. I told you I strongly prefer shifts starting at 9am. I told you this at our very first interview, and this is another thing I explained several times. I said I was willing to bend a little, and could start work at 8am. My first shift was canceled for reasons discussed above, and my next shift after that one was scheduled not at 9am, not at 8am, but at 7am. It's almost like you've listened closely to everything I've told you, and are deliberately trying to step over every boundary I've put up.
.
But this one went even further. I was told again and again to begin work at 7am, and had to repeat over and over that I was available starting at 8am at the earliest. It genuinely felt like talking to a brick wall. This tells me that if I stay at this company for any length of time, I'm going to be very routinely ignored, and have to assert the same boundaries repeatedly. And this isn't over taking a week off from work, or needing some special consideration of which the company would have to go out of its way to accommodate. This much fuss was being made over 1 single hour of start time, and again, I told you my availability at our very first interview.
.
If starting at 8am was a serious problem, you should not have hired me. Or you could have assigned me to literally any other client that does not require a 7am start time. That was another option you decided not to take. Hiring someone who tells you the conditions of their employment, then blatantly ignoring everything that person tells you, might be part of the reason your company has a staffing retention problem. Perhaps you're used to hiring people who are so financially desperate that they don't have a choice. I'm financially stable with multiple sources of income. I took this job purely because I wanted to. Not everyone can be bullied.
.
I'm not sure how many times I explained that my earliest start time is 8am, but by 5pm on June 20th, it was clear that you simply refuse to listen, and you're seemingly okay putting me in extremely dangerous situations with little regard for my concerns, so I'm resigning.
.
And since understanding start times is such a problem for you, this email is scheduled to be sent at 6am. I will be sleeping in, so please don't call (and I'm turning my phone off since you'll probably ignore that too.)

I worked here at Home Instead

I worked here at Home Instead.
Do NOT work here!!! They do not treat the employees as they should for the extremely hard physical & mental labor they do.
They give the employees crazy schedules, unpromised shifts, and 0 appreciations besides an email “thanking us”.
Rude office workers that are above the caregivers and treat them horribly. Inappropriate and nasty attitudes.
They will take off and put on shifts without communicating with you.
They do not communicate well in general you would think half of the employees are incompetent.
Very sad, depressing job. They are money hungry. The owner of the Edina Home Instead opened another franchise before the original one was already put together. They are disorganized, hire anyone, and do not fire people when they need to be fired.
I left this job and have never been more confident in my decisions.
The clients were wonderful but at the end of the day I was not being treated as I should’ve, was not getting paid the right amount for the work I was doing, and so much more. Please listen to everyone saying not to work with/for this company!!!! They are not lying!!!!

Caregivers

Since 2021, my family has been utilizing services from Home Instead. The experience has been wonderful. Our caregiver has practically become part of our family and makes me, as a daughter, feel so at ease. I know that my mom is cared for in a way I would love to provide if I didn’t have to work. The company works with families to find a caregiver who matches their clients' needs and personalities. You should always feel free to contact them with any questions or concerns you may have!

I have had home instead for a little…

I have had home instead in Wilkesbarre Pa for a little while but had to have them leave the care for my veteran they start off nice and act concerns but they get to comfortable and start doing pretty much nothing I have contacted the office went in person to the office they were very nice with saying will find you enough but you had to wait about a week or the next scheduled Some of the staff know how to cry wolf and need help you help them with food then it comes to can you lend me some money you do because you’re being concerned about how they need help and you’re going to get paid the next time they get paid but comes and goes and it never gets paid so beware from Kayla Campbell who left the company and left the veteran alone just gave breakfast and walked out the door because she didn’t feel comfortable when I asked her when I would be paid back and there is also a crystal Gonzalez who still works for them and she had to leave the home because she would do a few things but spend her time on her facebook more then working and now I am about to take another to court because they think it’s okay to ask like family but burn you and get angry and say you’ll get your money when I get it just know I have a paper drawn up that I had her fill out statements that when payment will be paid already 2 months behind . The caregivers like to play games but turn around and burn you to the point court has to be the last resort . As for the office staff you talk to one and you always here I have to talk to this one that one and get back to you but never do .When you tell what there employees did and you get told oh I’m so sorry that happened but don’t do anything about it. Or they don’t give you a heads up about one of there caregiver not coming and leave your veteran alone for 4 hours and just tell you there was mix up . My recommendation don’t use them unless you possibly have to and pray that you get a good honest one with out baggage that they bring in your home daily. With so much family drama that should be left at the door but bring it in and tell a patient of things and then they want help . Get angry because they can’t come back and ask like the family is the bad one but in the end it’s there family drama and issues that they bring into a loved ones home . Your told by office staff that they can’t take a client to a doctors appointment unless they go with you and your loved one but they take other clients out and about to doctors appointments and shopping banks but when your loved ones want to give you food they know dam well you don’t take from a client or a loved one and keep asking for help . It’s ridiculous nothing ever is done with the office and there employees

If you want wonderful care for a loved one, this is THE team!

Jena S was an incredibly compassionate and professional caregiver to my father for the last 5 weeks, so much so that my father would ask each night if Jena was coming back the next day. The communication with the local coordinator, Becky B, was top-notch. I am truly impressed with the service from start to finish. Can I give them more than 5 stars??!! Thank you, Home Instead, for making our experience a wonderful one.

Almost four years later

I found it very interesting that the review posted by Wendy Brooks was posted on July 10, 2022, which was just weeks before our loved one was abandoned by Home Instead's employee, and our loved one died the same night she was abandoned. I have been trying to get some form of justice for her ever since. I would like to see the laws in Nova Scotia changed so that Private fro profit healthcare companies are governed by health laws and not business laws. I would like the public to know that if it happened to our family, it could happen to their family. and I would like to see some sort of registry set up with the names of individuals who abandon seniors so that they can't care for seniors again. It was just a few minutes ago that I read Wendy Brooks review and decided to comment on it.

My aunt’s caregiver, Kandy, is amazing

My aunt’s caregiver is amazing. She takes care of every aspect of my aunt’s needs from health to taking care of groceries, pets, and the house. She is kind and compassionate and extremely patient with the many demands and requests my aunt has on a daily basis. Our family appreciates her so much. She has become quite a dear friend.

They were great with my mom

They were great with my mom. If you want one of the best caregivers then pick Courtney. She was great with my mom from beginning to the end. She even visited my mom when she went into hospice care at a facility until she passed. She was GREAT. We still consider her a part of our family. We could not have given my mom the care she received without Courtney.
