We had a check that never cleared our bank account, so after several months, I ultimately issued a replacement check with a note clearly stating that the original check should be shredded if it was ever found.

Both checks were somehow cashed on the exact same day.

We decided to let the payment roll over and apply toward 2028, but because we had paid early, we technically paid more than we would have if the original payment had been handled correctly, we did not receive the early-payment discount.
What concerns me most is that the original check was apparently found only after we had already issued a replacement, and despite the note specifically instructing that it be shredded, it was still deposited and cashed. I understand that mistakes happen, but the situation was certainly frustrating and left us with some questions about how the checks were handled.
