William Orgertrice III shared thisMy dad became a police officer the same year I was born. He taught me to run, and he's also the reason I got into computer science and engineering in the first place. This is our third race this year together, including the Firefighter's 5k, held each year around 9/11 in remembrance of the firefighters who ran into danger that day. Running's made me better at my job too. I'm currently a data engineer at Cargill, one of the largest privately owned companies in the country, so the systems I touch carry a heavy impact. Running clears my head and builds the same muscles I use at work, pacing myself, staying consistent, pushing through when it's just me versus the problem. It's connected me with people too. I've run with coworkers I barely knew, only to learn later how they could help me clear roadblocks I'd been stuck on. Some of my best work relationships started with running, and it's deepened my bond with my dad along the way. The real win is who you become, and who you meet, along the way. The culture and connection at RenderATL is unmatched! First, I want to give a huge thank you to Technologists of Color for providing me with the opportunity to attend this year. I’m truly grateful for the continued support and for organizations that create opportunities for technologists to connect, learn, and grow. Thank you Jonathan Exume and Mark Lawson! A highlight was getting invited to the Commit Awards by Ronald Williams. This was a great experience to be in the room with so many impactful people in technology. One of my favorite parts of the conference was getting to connect with so many amazing people. I especially enjoyed spending time at the Cargill booth, where I had the opportunity to speak with attendees as a Cargill employee and Data Engineer, share more about my experience, and hear about the journeys and aspirations of others. If I had to choose my biggest takeaway from RenderATL 2026, it would definitely be the connections and renewed energy I’m leaving with. The conversations, new connections, familiar faces, and opportunities to meet people doing incredible things. After four years, RenderATL continues to remind me of how powerful it is to be in rooms with people who are passionate about technology, growth, and community. Hearing negative perspectives on the state of the tech industry can be discouraging. Then you get in a room full of technologists and realize: * Companies are still hiring (and sponsoring conferences!) * Students are still seeking STEM education and landing internships * Developers are still looking to upskill and reskill as needed * Human connection is still in high demand (after two days at our booth, I can personally attest to this) There are still plenty of unknowns and uncertainty, but gatherings like this are how we come together, exchange ideas, and figure out what’s next. William Orgertrice III shared thisToday is my birthday! 🎉 Another birthday, another year of turning 2am pipeline failures into stories worth telling. 8+ years ago, I was a data engineer who barely knew what a pipeline was googling basic SQL, constantly playing catch-up. Somewhere along the way, “why is this breaking” became “here’s how I’d design this to not break.” But the growth I’m proudest of isn’t technical. A few years ago, I started speaking publicly about my experiences sharing the messy, honest version of what it’s like to build a career in data. Somewhere in that process, I realized my story could be a map for someone else’s. Now, helping people break into tech feels like as much a part of my job as any pipeline I’ve built. To everyone who mentored me thank you. To anyone early in their journey feeling behind: you’re not. You’re just early in the story. It was an incredible opportunity to engage with hundreds of talented technology professionals, learn about their career journeys, and share what makes Cargill such a great place to build a career. I was also honored to present a session focused on how to stand out in the tech industry, navigate interviews successfully, and build meaningful professional relationships through networking. One of the most rewarding parts of the experience was meeting so many passionate individuals from diverse backgrounds, hearing their stories, learning about their career aspirations, and sharing insights from my own journey in technology recruiting. The energy, innovation, and sense of community throughout the conference were truly inspiring. A sincere thank you to Meredith Willis , Melissa Eschenbacher, Oneka Cornelius, Claire Smith and my Cargill team members for trusting me with this opportunity to represent our organization and share my perspective with the tech community. The first day delivered thought-provoking conversations, practical insights, and plenty of opportunities to connect with people shaping the future of technology. One of my favorite sessions was Netlify’s AI presentation on agent optimization. The discussion around building, optimizing, and getting the most value from AI agents was especially relevant as organizations look beyond experimentation and toward practical, scalable AI solutions. It was a great reminder that successful AI adoption isn’t just about the technology itself—it’s also about how thoughtfully we design and optimize the systems around it. I also really enjoyed Avi Press’s session on AI loss. The conversation challenged some of the assumptions we make about AI and highlighted the importance of understanding the broader implications, trade-offs, and potential unintended consequences of increasingly AI-driven systems. It was the kind of session that leaves you thinking well after the presentation ends. I left with a notes and a plan. Beyond the sessions, the networking was a major highlight. Connecting with technology professionals, innovators, and industry leaders provided valuable opportunities to exchange ideas, share experiences, and explore what’s next. And, of course, I had to make time to check out Dress Code and pick up some new tech merch! 👕🔥 We wrapped up the day at the IBM + Arrow Electronics happy hour, which was the perfect opportunity to continue conversations, and connect in a more relaxed setting. Day 1 at Render ATL delivered on all fronts. If this is how the conference started, I’m excited to see what the rest of Render ATL brings today! Last week, we hosted the Ag & Trading leadership team in Sofia. It was refreshing to see some of my former hiring managers in person after working so closely together on the EMEA NGGP program. We caught up on the trainees' progress, discussed current TA trends, and simply caught up. It was also one of those days when hearing "what you do matters" meant more than we sometimes realize. To all the leaders I had the chance to exchange a few words with that evening, thank you for the enormous inspiration you bring and share with others. As founding president of the Liberian Student Association at Georgia State University and Scholarly Development Chair for Collegiate 100, l had the opportunity to bring both organizations together for a conversation about financial literacy and building wealth atter college. "Small small" speaks to the idea that meaningful progress starts with intentional steps. Our panelists shared perspectives on financial security, investing, trading, and real estate, then connected with students in smaller roundtable conversations about their financial goals. Thank you to Bior Bropleh , Sando Karneh, CEP®, Msc, Townes Purdy, and Stephanie Stanley for sharing your time and insight. Additionally, thank you to Megan Allen-Pierre, Vice President of the Liberian Student Association at Georgia State University, for helping me facilitate this wonderful event. William Orgertrice III reacted on thisWilliam Orgertrice III reacted on thisExcited to share that my teammate Andre Teague Jr. and I placed at HackHers 2026 with MaternalGrid! 🏆 The problem hit close to home for both of us. Roughly 44 to 46 percent of Georgia's 159 counties are already more than a 30 minute drive from a hospital that delivers babies, and every rural labor and delivery unit that closes makes that worse. The people deciding where to fund care, or whether a closure is survivable for a region, often don't have a clean way to see the impact ahead of time. Andre walked in with an idea he believed in but couldn't quite explain yet. Over 24 hours we turned it into MaternalGrid, an interactive tool that simulates what happens to maternity care access across Georgia when a facility opens or closes. I was Data and Backend Lead, and most of my time went somewhere I didn't expect. Before building anything, I audited the dataset we'd been handed and found the supplied birth figures matched the actual source data in zero of 159 counties. One key column turned out to be a constant multiplier dressed up as sourced data. I flagged and excluded both rather than build a demo on numbers that would fall apart under a judge's first question. From there I built the travel time model, a Haversine distance calculation adjusted for road curvature, precomputed across a 159 by 68 county to facility matrix so simulating a closure just means recomputing each county's minimum drive time on the fly. I also built the Postgres schema on TigerData and the API layer connecting the app to that data, catching a few bugs along the way including a join silently matching on facility name instead of ID. None of that is the flashy part of a hackathon demo. But it's the part that meant when a judge pushed on our numbers, we had an answer instead of a shrug. I’m proud of our Digital Technology & Data team that starts with our purpose and the problem we’re trying to solve – not the technology we want to deploy. I’m proud that our technologists see themselves as business leaders first, bringing technology, data and AI to some extraordinarily consequential work: helping a 160-year-old company operate better, serve customers differently and nourish the world in a safe, responsible and sustainable way. And I’m especially proud of how we’re doing it. We’re building more capability inside Cargill, putting deep business expertise alongside great technology talent, and keeping people at the center of the transformation. Georgia State provides micro grants to students each semester to help cover modest financial shortfalls affecting the students’ ability to pay tuition and fees and prevents them from stopping their studies or dropping out. Georgia State provides micro grants to students each semester to help cover modest financial shortfalls affecting the students’ ability to pay tuition and fees and prevents them from stopping their studies or dropping out. This past fall, more than 18,000 of Georgia State’s 25,000+ bachelor’s-degree-seeking students (72 percent) had some level of unmet need. This means that even after grants, loans, scholarships, family contributions and the income generated from students working 20 hours a week, the students lack sufficient funds to attend college. Each semester, hundreds of qualified students are dropped from their classes for lack of payment. For as little as $300, Panther Retention Grants provide the emergency funding to allow students who want to get their degrees the opportunity to stay enrolled. Last year, nearly 2,000 Georgia State students were brought back to the classroom—and kept on the path to attaining a college degree—through the program. Sixty-one percent of the seniors who received Panther Retention Grant support last academic year graduated within two semesters of receiving the grant and 82 percent either had graduated or were still enrolled one year after receiving the grant. With more than 5,000 grants awarded over the past four years, the Panther Retention Grant program has prevented thousands of students from dropping out of Georgia State.
