It was a wonderful opportunity for His Majesty to meet some of the new and growing innovators who have based themselves in the facility as well as members of the ETZ team and the “village” of supporters and backers that helped make all of this possible. Knowing that this took place only several weeks since the passing of the man who’s vision sits behind it all, Sir Ian Wood, was both sad and inspiring. During his visit, His Majesty met some of the first businesses based at EnergyWorks and heard about the technologies they are developing across the energy sector. EnergyWorks builds on the strengths that have made North East Scotland a global hub of energy excellence for more than 50 years: its people, its supply chain and its capacity for innovation. Ranging from the development of the National Data Repository (NDR) which hosts vast amounts of valuable data, used by people across different energy sectors and beyond, to the design and modification of the suite of digital tools our staff - and other partners - use every day. NSTA Chief Executive Stuart Payne CBE and Director for Supply Chain and Decommissioning Pauline Innes talked through the ongoing role for North Sea oil and gas production in the energy mix, our work to steward 14 projects towards consenting decisions, emissions reduction measures, and CCS opportunities. The meeting also provided an opportunity to highlight the multibillion-pound opportunity decommissioning can provide the domestic supply chain. Pauline gave an overview of the charter signed by 17 operators to help meet their well decommissioning obligations, boost the supply chain and potentially deliver cost savings. The NSTA and 17 operators have signed a charter with a set of guiding principles, including working collaboratively to develop a smoother approach to wellhead removals. The signatories will share data, expertise and resources, and identify opportunities to share vessels for this type of work. Industry estimates suggest using vessels instead of rigs could lower the total bill for remaining subsea wellhead removals by approximately 30%, or about £200 million. Signatories include Mads Gade, INEOS Energy; Scott Barr, Harbour Energy; Neil McCulloch. Adura; Chris Cox, Serica Energy plc; and Morten Kelstrup, Spirit Energy. Pauline Innes, NSTA Supply Chain and Decommissioning Director, said: “This initiative has the potential to be a win-win-win for operators, suppliers and taxpayers. By collaborating, we can tackle the backlog, lower the cost of well decommissioning, protect the marine environment, and stimulate the offshore service sector. Stuart Payne CBE posted thisLike many people across the North Sea community, and the wider energy world, I am deeply saddened today following the death of Sir Ian Wood. Sir Ian's impact on the sector was exceptional and unparalleled. His focus and commitment to the North East of Scotland was authentic and (as everyone who knew him would agree) relentless. For me he has had a personal impact on my life in a number of ways. It was his report, commissioned by the coalition government, that led to the creation of the OGA and all that followed. Throughout our first years he was a strong mentoring voice and presence, always willing to speak truth to power and yet somehow also always accessible and welcoming to people whenever they needed his advice. It was his vision and passion for the place we both call home that led him to build Opportunity North East and then from that the Energy Transition Zone. I was delighted when he asked me to join the board of ETZ, not least because it gave me the chance to work more closely with him. The experience did not disappoint. There will be many tributes paid, and rightly so. He was comfortable in the presence of monarchs and prime ministers, he was as decorated as a civilian can ever be, and yet I have memories of sitting with him in his office having a working lunch that consisted of his Sainbury's meal deals. He somehow managed to lead an industry, play on the global stage and yet never stop being "just" a nice guy from Aberdeen. My thoughts are with his family, his friends and all those who will be missing a giant of our industry today.

O evento aconteceu na sede da Firjan, no Rio de Janeiro, durante a semana da ROG.e. Durante minha sessão, tive a oportunidade de compartilhar um pouco da experiência britânica e destacar o impacto que essa importante atividade tem na economia do Reino Unido, movimentando cerca de 30 mil trabalhadores diretos, indiretos e induzidos. A Findes vem trabalhando em uma estratégia para transformar o Espírito Santo em um polo de investimentos no setor de decomissionamento. O governo britânico, por sua vez, tem apoiado diversas iniciativas para aproximar empresas capixabas e britânicas e estimular novas oportunidades de negócios e cooperação. Stuart Payne CBE liked thisStuart Payne CBE liked thisToo many people who work hard every day dread the bills coming in. I don’t think that’s right. Food. Energy. Getting to work. Everything costs more, and there’s less left at the end of the month. For too long, people have been told that’s just how it is. I don’t accept that. So I’m fighting to change it. We’re cutting tax on your electricity bills. We’re capping bus fares at £2, and giving disabled people 24/7 free bus travel. We’re making subscriptions as easy to cancel as they are to sign up to, and cracking down on fake discounts. If it says half price, it should be half price. We’ve changed the rules so, if your train is cancelled, you can automatically and immediately use your ticket on other operators, free of charge. And we’re cutting business rates by 20% for pubs, clubs and live music venues - helping the places that bring communities together. None of this fixes everything. I won’t pretend it does. But these changes add up. They put money back in your pocket and give you a bit more room to breathe. That’s what a government on your side should do. And that’s what I’m focused on every day.

Stuart Payne CBE liked thisStuart Payne CBE liked thisIt's a real privilege to be a volunteer trustee of Epilepsy Scotland and today at our board meeting we saw some statistics which I think are not well enough known. 🟣 Epilepsy is the most common serious neurological condition in Scotland - yet gets very little attention and is often portrayed wrongly in TV and films 🟣 There are two epilepsy-related deaths in Scotland per week (the number is likely much higher as many deaths which have epilepsy as a causal factor do not have epilepsy as cause of death) and 1 in 3 people living with epilepsy will have a lifetime mental health diagnosis 🟣 70% of people can live seizure-free with the right medication and care yet there is no national action plan to deliver preventative healthcare and assosicated support If you want to learn more about epilepsy there is some basic information here: https://lnkd.in/eJFX8aDG If you want to fundraise so this information is more widely known, and people with epilepsy are better supported, there are a range of ways to do so here: https://lnkd.in/eXKJMyc3

Stuart Payne CBE liked thisGreat to see the success of the Neart na Gaoithe windfarm investment and operation and maintenance hub at Eyemouth continue to inspire others looking to learn how to successfully develop new offshore wind jobs in harmony with existing sectors like fisheries and tourism. I wasn’t at this latest visit from the Houses of the Oireachtas, but as a former parliamentarian myself, I know the value of such visits and sincerely hope that the delegation found their trip to NnG and my adopted home area highly informative. Eyemouth and NnG have welcomed visitors before from Japan, Vietnam, USA, Scotland’s own island communities and councillors from Ireland previously, as well as Scotland’s FM, former DFM, former Economy Cab Sec and two previous Energy Ministers and a former UK transport Minister. Eyemouth is very much on the domestic and international map as a great success story for the economy of the town and for securing our energy transition as a nation, but also I hope for NnG owners EDF power solutions UK and Ireland and ESB too. The achievements of Christine Bell and the team and volunteer trustees at Eyemouth Harbour Trust to-date in developing a role for the harbour in offshore wind with NnG have been very welcome and exciting. My colleagues and I at South of Scotland Enterprise and partners at Scottish Borders Council continue to work hard in support of fulfilling EHT’s masterplan to expand the town’s role even further; through exciting proposals to expand the harbour itself and develop adjacent zoned employment land. Developing the full business case is the next major step, but if we make the case and secure such an investment, in the order of £250 million in public and private funding, it would be transformative for the economy of the whole Eyemouth and East Berwickshire area, and could support multiple projects in both Scotland’s and England’s waters,”. The evidence from independent consultants suggest Eyemouth presents a compelling case for the hosting and efficient and resilient operation of CTVs and, in future, SOVs for further projects, and EHT are working hard to ensure, if successful, that the community and wider economy of the town derive the maximum benefit from this. Its a privilege to be part of the team supporting EHT and seeing this post is another boost! 😊Stuart Payne CBE liked thisLast Friday we welcomed a delegation from the Houses of the Oireachtas Committee on Fisheries and Marine Affairs to Eyemouth – home to the operations and maintenance (O&M) base for NnG offshore wind farm. Now a year into operation, the site gave the delegation a close look at how an offshore wind project is built, run and woven into the life of a working port – including how it interacts with the fishing community and other maritime users. NnG – our 50/50 joint venture with ESB – has driven significant investment along this stretch of the coast. The £9m investment in the O&M base has created more than 50 high-skilled local jobs and boosted demand for local businesses and services, giving a real lift to the town's economy. For the delegation, looking at Ireland's own offshore future, it was a chance to see firsthand what this industry can deliver for a coastal community. Thanks to all the EDF power solutions UK colleagues who helped to make the day a success, and to our visitors from Ireland for making the trip to Scotland. I am delighted to share that Scottish Enterprise has agreed to progress the Tullos regeneration project with Shell UK to maximise the potential development of the site for the benefit of the city of Aberdeen. Shell UK intends to transfer ownership of the site of our former offices to Scottish Enterprise, the national economic development agency, and make a financial contribution to the development, subject to final contracts being agreed. Potential plans include the construction of new industrial manufacturing accommodation. Investment in the provision of modern physical manufacturing infrastructure is seen as a core driver of productivity in Scotland. The site is located within the city’s Energy Transition Zone, which aims to secure the North East of Scotland’s position as a globally-recognised centre of energy excellence, focusing on hydrogen, offshore wind and carbon capture and storage. Scottish Enterprise is a founding partner in the Energy Transition Zone and has contributed £2 million to the development of ETZ EnergyWorks, the flagship incubator and scale-up hub within the zone. Scottish Enterprise Chief Executive Adrian Gilespie said: “Today’s good news takes us a significant step closer to reaching a legal agreement with Shell UK on our shared aspiration to redevelop the land at Tullos for the benefit of Aberdeen and the North-East.” This has always been our plan, and it marks the next key step in our vision to create a positive impact from the Tullos site. It builds on the successful completion of the deconstruction phase as well as the separate planning permission we have for an all-electric vehicle (EV) charging hub at the Tullos site.

Great to catch up with contacts and old colleagues yesterday at EIC (Energy Industries Council) “Bankable Energies” conference. Though there was some gloom in the room about recent events in the Middle East and the number of projects stuck pre-FID, there was a clear sentiment that long-term investors in strategic projects are not distracted by short term events and that there are exciting opportunities in well developed hydrogen and CCUS projects - eg EET Hydrogen’s HPP1 - and advanced SAF coming forward.
