It’s a busy week for StemBond Technologies with two events and the soft-launch of our early-adopter programme. On Tuesday, Andrew Hodgson and Mira Katsur attended Advanced Therapies Integrates at Victoria House in London. They attended a valuable session on ‘Investment Realities’, which covered the fact that the current fundraising landscape remains challenging, but also highlighted some good opportunities to look at diversification in relation to both funding and early-revenue generation. On the funding front, there was discussion around the importance of seeking out funding from a range of different sources, given the current climate. The conversation about revenue-generation opportunities also highlighted different potential strategies, including out-licensing parts of a technology, finding partners where there’s a good synergy between their aims and your solution, and of course grant funding. Interestingly there was also talk of bootstrapping early products, or even crowd funding. It’s great to know that StemBond is already taking a multi-path approach as suggested at the session: building relationships with investors, while also connecting with great partner organisations who see the real value of our technology. It may be a marathon rather than a sprint, but we’re committed to bringing our customisable hydrogels to market to support the development of more effective treatments. The Royal Marsden and the ICR Partner with Mint Medical to launch global AI cancer imaging tool The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and The Institute of Cancer Research London, (ICR) have partnered with MedTech Company, Mint Medical to launch an artificial intelligence (AI) cancer imaging tool which improves monitoring for patients with cancer that affects the bones. This new software, which contains an AI algorithm written by researchers at The Royal Marsden and the ICR, can help doctors to identify and track bone disease progression in patients with advanced prostate cancer and multiple myeloma. By providing a more accurate and consistent way to track bone disease progression, the technology could save patients and healthcare professionals time and money. This is a thorough, timely and well-written report on UK university-investor links by Tony Hickson at Cancer Research Horizons; and thank you for specifically mentioning Brandon Capital in the context of the BioCatalyst collaboration we operate across >50 medical research institutes across Australasia. This model has given us unrivalled visibility and access to early-stage ideas, and created collaborations and transparency across the ecosystem. Three points jumped out at me in Tony's report: 1) UK universities produce large numbers (hundreds) of companies, but very few (5%) ever raise significant money (>£100m). Quality always trumps quantity in company creation. 2) Historically, a relative shortage of sector-specific and unconstrained (pre)seed-stage investors that can deploy meaningful amounts of cash (>£5m) very early - crucial for creating new companies that have "legs". 3) >70% of large and late-stage venture funding (>£100m) is coming from non-UK funds. There are pros and cons to this - it shows the UK sector is robust, resilient and globally attractive, but also that much of the economic benefit is ultimately exported, and UK funds are shouldering too much early risk (certainly in biotech where significant up-rounds are rare, therefore only investing early without the means to follow-on is not economically rewarded). https://lnkd.in/ei-KgbwP

📢 NEW BLOG: UK HealthTech Roadshow, delivered in partnership with the Centre for Sectoral Economic Performance at Imperial College London at Imperial College London and the Association of British HealthTech Industries (ABHI) , has brought together leaders from industry, academia, and government to address the challenges and opportunities shaping the UK’s £13.5bn HealthTech sector. Spanning regional roundtables in Edinburgh, Oxford, Manchester, and Cardiff, the roadshow explored how national Industrial Strategy can align with local growth priorities to strengthen innovation, boost manufacturing, and unlock global competitiveness. With insights from CSEP’s research—showing HealthTech employs over 150,000 people and contributes up to £15bn GVA annually—the discussions underscored both the UK’s scientific strength and the urgent need for policy reforms to accelerate adoption, investment, and export growth.
