This short video shares six practical, compassionate tips for carers navigating Christmas, grounded in evidence and real-world experience. The video is created by our brilliant Carer Lead Jenny Langley, who co-developed the New Maudsley Carer Model alongside Professor Janet Treasure. Jenny has also played a central role in helping Univa become the world’s first eating-disorder care platform to bring together family therapy for anorexia and the New Maudsley Carer programme in a single, joined-up dual-app experience for patients and carers. What's changed is that it now comes with a clear statement of what Neuly is for, who it's for, and what it doesn't do. Thanks to Sabine Flechet at Masawa for sharing: 1. Why she and Joshua Haynes have chosen to start this fund. It stems from personal experience and a desire to change things for the better. 2. What startups they've chosen to back so far. They have a rich pipeline of opportunities, but startups (like Five Lives Univa & Psyon Games) are not only working on mental health directly with a viable business model, but they also represent founder teams who are open to Masawa's Nurture Capital approach in which part of the management fee is dedicated to the founders' personal and team well being. 3. How they are viewing the long term success of their fund. - they will have exits > they've had one already Quan (Acquired by TrueTribe) < - their Nurture Capital approach is patient and well-informed (thanks to human due diligence and innovative financial incentives tied to a more resilient portfolio) - they are a proof of concept for other funds of how to support founders as investors AND coaches - they facilitate field learning via newsletters, salons and pipeline development -- expanding knowledge and mindsets about "what is mental health" - their returns will be shared equitably and founders are offered soft landings, creating a virtuous legacy So exciting! Big thanks to the team at Hystra for hosting us in their office space. And thanks to all who listened and asked good questions, even suggested new ideas and further occasions for conversation. We’re building scalable #microneedle patch platforms for #biosensing and #drugdelivery. Why microneedles? Because they open up a fascinating space between traditional patches and conventional needles — enabling access through the skin in a way that is less invasive, more convenient, and much more consumer-friendly. For biosensing, that means accessing interstitial fluid to measure biomarkers. For drug delivery, it means exploring new ways to deliver molecules that are otherwise difficult to administer — for example peptides. That is one of the areas I’m especially excited about. Peptide medicines are becoming increasingly important, but many still rely on injections. We believe there is an opportunity to rethink that experience. There are plenty of technical challenges ahead, and that is precisely what makes this interesting. We’re tackling them with an outstanding team at CSEM, bringing together expertise in microtechnology, materials, sensors, and manufacturing. A huge thank you to Pascal D. O., Silvia Demuru, Philipp Rottmann, Jaemin Kim, Felix K., and Samantha Paoletti, and everyone else at CSEM who has partnered with us along the way (Colette Bichsel! 🙌). I always leave these buzzing because they're small enough to get into the real detail on what this market's actually up against, and intimate enough that you can walk the room and talk to people properly. They feel almost invite-only, and let you focus on what you want out of the day. Kanu Batra gave the most honest talk of the day on what commissioning with the NHS is really like with speek. Not the usual tidy investor version but the ups and downs we all hit working into the NHS. Valerie Voon at London Psychiatry Clinic ran through the evidence on TMS for depression and OCD. We've been proving deep rTMS for years at Atrom Mindcare, so seeing the data laid out properly was powerful, and it shows exactly what this technology's capable of. Tiffany Boswell showed us what Meela are doing, matching people with a therapist on preference and what they actually need, not just the diagnosis on the referral form. Obvious once someone says it, but most services still shove you at whoever's next available. Get the match right first time and the clinical benefits follow. Who knew. Richard Andrews was there with Univa, building AI-driven monitoring and personalised care for eating disorders. Second serious company in this space for him, and the proposition looks really slick. Worth watching people who've done it once and come back to do it again. Kerstyn Comley walked us through Tellmi, anonymous peer support for young people with real moderators stepping in when something looks risky. Dr Sarah Campbell showed Play Well For Life, game-based and AR tools for kids who switch off the second therapy looks like therapy. Laura Stembridge's InsideOut® properly got me too, on-demand therapy and AI coaching that doesn't feel like the 'cheap AI version' of the real thing. I want to hear more about that one... The panel, Dr Sarah Hughes CBE, Branislav Trajkovski, Karl Bennett, Aaron F., Yasmin Baker, Kate Martin, Dr Ally Jaffee MBChB BSc, and my old friend Shazna Khanom gave every pitch a proper challenge while clearly rooting for the founders behind them. Then, completely unplanned, half my old ieso crowd were there. Charlotte Housden, Rebecca Minton, Rachel Websdale, Nii Lante Wallace-Davies, Stephen Freer, Ana Catarino, Andy Blackwell, Shaun Mehew, Shazna Khanom, Sharon Harrison, Dr Cristiana Vagnoni and Ria Lowrie. A proper nostalgic moment. Good to catch up with Alex Ashburner, Aaron Fraser-Morris and Luke Boobbyer again, and to meet Dr. Jan Cosgrave and Tim Galliver. Days like this remind me why this sector's worth the hard days. There's so much work to be done. Let's keep going!

A big thank you to Aahuti Rai and everyone behind the Mental Health Innovation Network for bringing together such a good mix of founders, clinicians, commissioners, investors, providers and industry. What I particularly enjoyed was that the conversations went well beyond technology. They were about how we turn promising innovation into something that is trusted, clinically useful, scalable and actually adopted. A few conversations I’m looking forward to continuing: Richard Andrews, Univa — really enjoyed our discussion around co-design, young people and families, and the journey from pilot into an operational care pathway. We’ve already agreed to continue the conversation over coffee in London next week. Tiffany Boswell, Meela — fascinating to hear how therapeutic matching, patient preference and technology can influence engagement and outcomes. Looking forward to picking up our conversation virtually soon. Laura Stembridge, InsideOut® — only had a short conversation, but I was particularly interested in the work around AI-supported mental health, clinical safeguards and human oversight. Plenty more to discuss. Kerstyn Comley, Tellmi — a strong reminder that innovation in young people’s mental health must start with their lived experience, accessibility and trust, not simply the technology. I also enjoyed speaking with Aaron F. from Bupa about how insurers can play a much bigger role in helping useful health innovations reach people at scale, and with Karl Bennett about the role of EAPs and employers in widening access to preventive and early-intervention support. Great to reconnect with Yasmin Baker and really enjoyed meeting Dr Ally Jaffee MBChB BSc — particularly her perspective as a younger clinician engaging a much wider clinical community. I can already see some interesting conversations there around our Tech4Doctors work. And although we didn’t manage to speak in person, good to connect with Samuel Jacobs at MagVenture and Matthew Hoad-Robson of Tend VR — conversations I hope to continue shortly. Also good to meet/reconnect with Valerie Voon, Branislav Trajkovski, Freya Hickman, Ann Watson and many others building, funding and supporting new approaches to mental health. My main takeaway? The difficult part is rarely the idea itself. It is bringing clinical trust, evidence, product design, technology, funding, commissioning and distribution together at the right time. Most pharma teams are still building their commissioning strategy for an NHS that no longer exists. Commissioning is moving to ICBs, cluster by cluster.
