The worst experience of my life

The worst experience of my life. We were four people travelling, including a four months and an eight years old.
First, we reserved a specific car at the counter. We left to get our documents and when we got back the car was gone.
Second, we got a car and after driving for about 2.5 hours, we got a flat tire. We waited for about 4 hours before the taxi arrived, which brought us to GRU where we originally departed from. We arrived at their office around 11pm and they gave us a car below our category and expected us to proceed with our journey. We were not offered a hotel or anything. After all the stress I had been through, they expected me to proceed to my destination (over 600km) with a four months old.
They said I could go to a branch near to my destination and get a car for the category I paid for. I was so stressed that I didn’t even bother.
Everything was so frustrating. I found them very inhuman. I don’t recommend and would never rent from them again.

Dangerous practice, agency to avoid

Consumer Review – Dangerous practice, agency to avoid

Warning: the Avis agency at Recife Airport charged €37.45 without authorization after unilaterally modifying the contract when the vehicle was returned.
This practice is very dangerous: once the agency has access to your bank card, you have no way to prevent unauthorized charges at that moment, and it becomes long and difficult to obtain a refund afterward.

Unacceptable behavior from the manager and complete disregard for the original contract.
I strongly advise avoiding this agency.

Bad service

We had informed the clerk we would need the car up to a specific time due to our flight leaving at night. They made the contract to another time en charges an additional day tarrif vor the extra 6 hours we used the car. The extra day tarrif was also higher then originally agreed upon per day. We were informed we would be contacted before closing the contract by a manager but that never happened. The contract was closed and we were never contacted.

Terrible

Terrible, terrible, terrible company. Three months after what I thought was final payment and contract close, I get an email from their collection agency saying I owe an extra $100+ dollars. Pay or face legal actions. I asked Unidas for an explanation of the charge and was told it was an “administrative fee”. I hope in the future Avis can find a representative in Brazil that doesn’t need to extort from their customers.

Abusive and unethical charge after car accident involving injured family members

In January 2025, I rented a car from Unidas and named a third party as the driver. On January 10th, the vehicle was involved in a serious accident in a remote area, resulting in total loss of the car and injuries to the driver's wife and children, who required immediate rescue and medical attention.

The company was informed as soon as possible, and all requested procedures were followed, including the payment of a BRL 18,000 deductible, as stated in the contract. Six months later, without prior notice, I was surprised with a new charge of BRL 22,690, claiming that we had violated the contract by not notifying the company within 1 hour of the accident and not sending the police report within 24 hours.

This is not only inhumane and abusive, but also disproportionate, especially considering that:

All steps were followed in good faith,

The accident involved injured people in a life-threatening situation,

The company never mentioned any pending issue until six months later,

There is no clear clause in the contract that defines such a penalty.

I am now reporting this case to all possible consumer protection channels in Brazil, including the government, the courts, and social media. A company that chooses to profit from the misfortune of its customers, ignoring human life and common sense, does not deserve trust.

Avoid this company at all costs.

Absolutely Disappointed – Beware of This Scam Partnership Between Avis and Unidas (Brazil)

We booked a car rental through Avis, trusting their reputation in Europe where we live, for a trip in Brazil (from São Luís to Fortaleza). To our surprise, upon arrival in São Luís, we discovered that the service was being handled not by Avis directly, but by a local partner called Unidas—an utterly unprofessional and dishonest company.

Although we had a confirmed price at the time of booking, Unidas immediately charged us double the agreed amount upon arrival—completely blowing our travel budget. When we raised concerns, we were told we could get a refund at the drop-off location in Fortaleza.

Unfortunately, that was another lie.

At the Fortaleza office, we received no refund, no support, and to make matters worse, we also never got back the deposit we were promised would be returned within days. It’s now been over a month, and despite multiple attempts via email, WhatsApp, and phone calls, we’ve received zero response from Unidas.

This experience felt like a scam, and it's shocking that a brand like Avis would associate with such a shady partner. It’s clear that Unidas takes advantage of tourists, and the lack of accountability from both companies is unacceptable.

Avoid this service at all costs. Rent from another provider directly, and don’t fall into the same trap we did.

A terrible experience from start until…

A terrible experience from start until finish. Their seguro "completo" is a big lie. They allow you to pay a fortune for the full insurance but then it doesn't cover any of the damages. They have created a system intentionally designed to take advantage of their clients and charge a fortune for everything and anything they can possibly get away with. They are now trying to charge me about 3X the price it would have cost for me to fix the car in the local shop, even though I had purchased the complete insurance coverage for the car I rented. I had also tried to rent an SUV and then they gave me a smaller car even though I told them I needed the SUV to get to taipu de fora, where there are no paved roads. It rained for 21 days and I was trapped and couldn't go anywhere because the car couldn't get through the giant poças de agua and mud. Then they charged me when the front end of the car broke while I was trying to go through a big poca de agua to get to the dentist. So I was blamed for the damage to the car and now they are still trying to bill me and trying to charge my credit card even though I told them there was no way I was paying those charges!! They are seriously like vultures. Do not even consider doing business with them!

What an absolute shit mess

What an absolute shit mess. So, I had hired the car from Avis, when I get to Foz do Iguacu, they tell me Unidas is the agent. They were horrible to deal with. They did not honour my Avis booking, charged more and refused to refund cleaning fee when returned after we washed the car. They also charge for second driver despite me contacting Avis to confirm as Preferred member my wife is no-charge as second driver. Never, never again from Unidas, they are rogues. My daughter also hired a car from Movidas down the road and it was seamless. Avis is also to blame for accepting my booking and not advising me of using an agent. That will also be an extra review as I am Preferred member.

They've charged me extras and said this…

They've charged me extras and said this was because their system couldn't match the tariff I've booked in, but I could then call their toll free to get a refund, which I couldn't as it is a 0800 phone number that does not work with international mobiles. The office could not resolve it, only via phone... (ridiculuous)
It took more than 2 months and several emails to get the refund. I do not recommend Unidas. Apart from that, you need to return the car clean (first time a car rental place told me that).

Unidas is not a serious company. I had a booking at 800US$. I paid those 800US$ when taking the car. One week after car restitution, they took 280€ on my credit card without bill. After several exchanges with their customer service, Unidas added several services that I hadn't suscribed. Customer service refuse to recognize they're wrong, despite the voucher I have provided.
AVOID UNIDAS !

Never rent there because they are not reliable.

Terrible company

I had a terrible experience renting a car with Unidas in Florianópolis and wouldn't recommend them to anyone. I do strongly recommend Localiza as my experiences with them have always been great.
First, even though I was the only one in the office, it still took them an hour to do all the check in and paperwork.

Second, the car they gave me had extremely low tire pressure (20 psi in one tire) in various tires. I pointed this out to the attendant and he said they didn't have anyway to fill it, so I then had to stop and fill the tires.

Third, and most importantly, while driving, I happened to get a speeding ticket via a camera trap, but I didnt find this out until about a week after Id returned the car and i got an email (entirely in Portuguese) notifying me of the ticket. It was extremely unclear how I could pay the fine, and tried emailing Unida (no responde) and messaging them on WhatsApp (automated system requiring you have a CPF). I finally had a Brazilian friend help me, and in the end, I had to print and hand fill out several documents and then mail them to the federal traffic police office in Brasília, which is craziness. Luckily I'm still in country because I can't imagine how I would've done it if I was just visiting Brazil for a week or two, rented a car, flown home and then got the email with the ticket.

Don’t rent unidas.

I got a car with a nail from they patio, after few km the car start show need air on tire, the I stopped and check the front tire with a nail/screw rusted( they don’t check the cars) after that I got to a place to fix it , that cost my money , I got the Bill, when I returned the didn’t pay my money back, Intalk to service costumer and the say to wait 5 days to pay my 40 reais of fixing, over a month no answer no money, by the way of give back a car with a nail they will charge you. I’m don’t recommend a company like this, screw up hard worker. I sent another email requesting and still no answer don’t rent from Unidas and from movida is the same company. I read they soon will be together with localiza so a monopoly in car rental in Brazil. That’s a shame.
