Not Worth the Risk for Startups

Why Social Cat Might Not Be Worth the Risk for Startups

As a newly launched small brand based in New Zealand, every dollar of our marketing budget counts, and protecting our initial reputation means everything to us. Like many fellow founders, I came across Social Cat through TikTok advertisements promising a streamlined way to connect with creators under various collaboration models. Naively optimistic and eager to grow, I fell for the pitch, tested it briefly, and quickly committed to a paid subscription.

Now, after a two-month trial and nearly $200 USD spent on subscription fees alone, I am sharing our experience. Unfortunately, the entire journey resulted in only one piece of content, which unfortunately fell far below acceptable quality standards.

If you are a fellow small business or an early-stage startup considering this platform, I would sincerely urge you to weigh the following systemic issues before subscribing.

1. Extremely Low Response Rates and Non-Binding Invitations

The outreach process on the platform proved highly inefficient for us. We meticulously selected and invited 100 creators who perfectly fit our brand alignment and requirements. Out of those 100, only two responded positively. To make matters worse, one of those two suddenly changed their mind after initial agreement, demanding an entirely different collaboration model. On this platform, creators seem to back out or shift terms at will, and the system offers no way for brands to hold them to their initial interest.

2. Complete Lack of Accountability and Deliverable Delays

Aside from our outbound invites, we also vetted inbound applicants and moved forward with three creators (two based overseas). We dispatched our inventory immediately to ensure a smooth partnership. The results were deeply discouraging:

Creator A: Constantly delayed delivery for over multiple weeks. When the content was finally uploaded, it completely ignored our agreed-upon brief and guidelines.
Creator B: Claimed the product never arrived and subsequently ghosted all of our follow-up messages.
Creator C: Promised to post but is currently overdue by more than two weeks with zero deliverables submitted.
3. The Power Imbalance: High Risk for Brands, Zero Risk for Creators

The core flaw of the platform lies in how it leaves small brands entirely vulnerable. The system appears to offer zero structural protection for paying businesses because:

No Anonymous Feedback System: Brands cannot leave anonymous reviews or low ratings on a creator's profile to caution other businesses or flag unreliability.
No Third-Party Arbitration: There is no active mediation or escrow-like verification from the platform to ensure creators actually fulfill their end of the bargain before a campaign is marked complete.
The Fear of Retaliation: As a fragile, early-stage brand, we are forced to remain passive and overly accommodating. We cannot risk taking a firm stance with unreliable creators because they hold the power to post damaging, negative "reviews" under the guise of "authentic opinions"—which could instantly destroy a startup’s reputation before it even takes off.
While I assume creators likely enjoy free access to the platform, it is the brands that bear the full financial burden of subscription fees and marketing costs—yet we are the ones forced to shoulder 100% of the operational risk.

We write this not out of anger, but out of a genuine desire to share a cautionary tale. For small businesses operating on thin margins, the platform currently lacks the safeguards necessary to protect your investment, your time, and your brand's peace of mind.

Honestly one of the best platforms for me to start building my UGC journey. I got plenty of gifting collaborations through Social Cat and it really helped me connect with brands as a small creator and stay-at-home mum creator.

The app is easy to use, campaigns are simple to apply for, and I love that even smaller creators still have opportunities to work with brands. It gave me a good starting point to build my portfolio and confidence creating UGC content. Definitely recommend for anyone wanting to start in the UGC space without needing a huge following.

Paid work on socialcat

Social Cat has been a positive experience for me in terms of getting one paid job. The comms and communication was easy and the payment was made promptly. It isn't the easiest to get work on there that is paid but when it works it is a good platform.

Such an amazing experience!

I’ve had a great experience using Social Cat as a creator. The platform has provided opportunities to connect with brands and build real collaborations, including multiple paid partnerships over the last few months.

I especially appreciate how easy the platform is to navigate and communicate through, and I’ve enjoyed working with brands that align with my content style and audience. It’s been a great resource for growing my UGC portfolio, gaining experience with brand campaigns, and building long-term relationships with companies.

Overall, Social Cat has been a positive experience for me as a creator, and I would definitely recommend it to other content creators looking to grow and connect with brands.

Growth and exposure

I joined socialcat looking to grow as a content creator and that is exactly what has happened. I’ve done over 10 collaborations and created some great content but most of all, I’ve made some amazing business connections. SocialCat’s process is simple and as a creator, you choose which campaigns to apply for so you only get products you’ll also find useful. If you’re a creator or brand, you need an account!

I enjoy using SocialCat on a regular basis for gifted/some paid collabs. I was newer to UGC when I started on the site and I was quickly matched up with companies that wanted to work with me. The site is easy to manage and figure out. I do wish they had an app, it would simplify things for me, but it works well as is too!! I love SocialCat and I definitely recommend it!!

As a smaller creator I have loved using Social Cat. It has helped me access brands and opportunities that I would not of even known where to begin in terms of reaching out and requesting collaborations. The fact that I can set up my profile to showcase previous content and information about myself is so valuable and it feels like you are selected by brands based on your content, rather than your following numbers. The collaborations have been easy to arrange and the process makes you feel like you are protected as a creator as you have agreed upon terms kept on there so there is no risk of debate about if you have fulfilled your content requirements a brand set out.

Love the pet niche options!

This site took me so long to get into, which I feel like does helps because it doesn’t get over saturated in that case. I have had great luck landing gigs on this site as well, however the lack of paid gigs does concern me and if continues in the future will drive me away from the app. Overall, very user friendly and great brand communication on the application!
