Auto Europe deals with a rogue rentalcompany

I rented a car through Auto Europe. Arriving at Munich airport we went looking for the Flex to Go desk where we could get the rental car. It was not at the airport at the other rental companies, but we had to look for a pick-up location for a shuttle bus. After 20 minutes of waiting we were picked up and dropped off a few miles further at a kind of industrial estate where there was a hotel, but apparently not a car rental company.

We turned out to have to enter a blinded door next to the hotel entrance and came into a kind of office in which a lady with a foreign accent (not German) told us that she had no message to the fact that I had already taken out comprehensive insurance with Auto Europe. We also had to pay an extra 150 euros because we were going to cross the border with Austria.

Also, our credit card was not accepted using the security code because my Visa card did not fully state my first name, but only my initial. Because we were kind of dropped off in the means of no-where without alternative car rental companies nearby and no more shuttle bus nearby, under protest we had to pay an extra amount of 350 euros in addition to the 182 euros paid to Auto Europe since we still wanted to leave with a car. It is incomprehensible that Auto Europe as a broker rents cars from a rogue company like Flex to Go. This while this company was hardly cheaper than other rental companies.

I feel cheated by AutoEurope and their partner Bravacar

I booked a rental car through AutoEurope, operated locally by their partner Bravacar in Madeira/Portugal. My reservation and voucher clearly state that “taxes are included”. There is no limitation nor condition regarding when or by whom these taxes might be introduced.
Despite this, Bravacar charged an additional "tourist tax payment" — directly contradicting the written contract and ignoring my clear explanation.
AutoEurope and Bravacar have refused to refund this extra tax charge. For more than a month, neither company has provided any solution or even a meaningful response to my emails.
This conduct is a serious breach of trust and is plainly not reputable.

Would give negative stars if I could

Would give negative stars if I could. Rented a car via platform like many times before. Put only me as driver as typically you can add at counter easily. My wife was not allowed to pick up the car and 100% cancellation fee was charged. Avoid Auto Europe at any cost. I for sure will never book again

Horrific customer service

Horrific customer service - or rather none. It is practically impossible to contact any form of customer service for a reclamation after your initial reclamation ticket has been accepted. I have been waiting for over two weeks to hear from Auto Europe, nothing. Can't find a customer service email anywhere.

I booked a rental car through Auto…

I booked a rental car through Auto Europe with Avis, picking up in Atlanta and dropping off at New Orleans Airport.
When I arrived to collect the car, Avis informed me that no cars were available for drop-off in New Orleans and that Auto Europe should never have confirmed the reservation without first verifying availability.
What made the situation even worse was the complete lack of customer support.
Auto Europe was impossible to reach: they did not answer phone calls, and they ignored emails. We were left stranded with no assistance whatsoever.
As a result, we were forced to make a new reservation directly with Avis at nearly double the original cost, without insurance, while also incurring additional transportation expenses and losing valuable vacation time.
Auto Europe failed to provide the service we paid for and then failed to provide any support when things went wrong.
We have requested a full refund and reimbursement of the additional costs caused by their error.

Stay away from Auto Europe!
Unreliable service, poor communication, and nonexistent customer support.
I would never use this company again!

Do not rent through Auto Europe.

Do not rent through Auto Europe.
Do not rent through Auto Europe.

My experience was that Auto Europe advertises attractive rental rates that apparently cannot actually be honoured when you arrive in the United States if you do not hold a US driver's license.

I booked a car through Auto Europe at a confirmed price. At pickup, I was told that the booked rate did not apply to me because I did not have a US driver's license and that I would have to pay a significantly higher price to receive the vehicle.

The most shocking part was not the additional charge itself, but Auto Europe's response afterwards.

I filed a complaint and repeatedly asked a very simple question: If the rate was not valid for me, why was Auto Europe selling it to me in the first place?

That question was never answered.

Instead, Auto Europe completely ignored the issue and hid behind the rental company's explanation. They made no serious effort to investigate why a confirmed booking suddenly turned into a much more expensive rental at pickup. In the end, they simply told me to contact the supplier directly.

This is unacceptable.

I did not book with the supplier. I booked with Auto Europe. The advertised price came from Auto Europe. The confirmation came from Auto Europe. The problem originated from an Auto Europe booking.

If a company sells a rate that cannot be honoured and then refuses to take responsibility when the customer is charged far more than expected, that tells you everything you need to know about their customer service.

Based on my experience, I would strongly advise against booking through Auto Europe.

Loyal 20-year customer – insurance denied due to hidden clause

I have been using Auto Europe for over 20 years for both business and private travel worldwide, and I never had issues before. That’s why this experience is particularly disappointing.

For a recent rental (19–21 March 2026), I booked a car including “full protection” insurance via Auto Europe Deutschland GmbH. My return time was 21:00, while the rental office closed at 18:00. This was clearly stated in the booking and known in advance.

As instructed, I returned the car after hours, parked it at the rental location, and dropped the keys in the designated drop box.

The next day, the rental company reported damage to the left headlight (likely caused by a stone). I paid for the damage and submitted a claim under the “full protection” insurance.

Auto Europe rejected the claim based on a clause stating that damages identified after an out-of-hours return are not covered.

The issue is not just the clause itself, but the fact that:

They knew in advance I would return the car after closing time
This is a standard and common procedure
At no point was I clearly warned that this would invalidate the insurance

In practice, this means I was sold insurance that did not cover my actual rental conditions.

After 20 years of loyalty, I expected better transparency and fairness. I am currently escalating this through the European Consumer Centre.

I hope Auto Europe reconsiders its position and improves how these important limitations are communicated to customers.

**Update (resolved):**

Following my initial review, I’m pleased to share that Auto Europe Deutschland GmbH has reconsidered my case after further escalation.

They have now agreed to refund the full amount, which I appreciate.

While the initial handling of the claim was disappointing—especially given the lack of clear communication about the after-hours return clause—I do value that Auto Europe ultimately took responsibility and reached a fair resolution.

Thank you to their team for reviewing the case again.

I hope this also helps improve transparency for future customers regarding important insurance exclusions.

Extra insurance and deposi still not refunded

Last month, we hired a car via AutoEurope at Dryyve in Salzburg. At the pick-up point, we had to pay some kind of deposit of 199 euros and an additional insurance, despite the fact that we already had booked a full insurance with the reservation. When returning the car, the staff member of Dryyve checked the car and all was fine. So, we expected to get the deposit back in our account. Uptill now (more than 4 weeks later), we still haven't received the deposit and the customer service responds only very slowly. Personally I would recommend not to hire a car via this company but to hire the car at a competitor who offers full service (car + booking via 1 company) instead of via an intermediary such as AutoEurope.

Booking cancelled no update

I have booked a car on Sunday Dec 21 st at Berlin airport around 1 am for 5 days . I got a confirmation on the web that my payment went through and I should receive a voucher. To my utter horror, my booking was cancelled and there was no email update n the voucher I went to rental car agency next day to collect the car , and they mentioned no booking on my name. Tried calling Auto Europe hotline to be greeted by automated voice mail saying we are out off office hours. This was complete disgrace and the con job. I never expected Auto Europe of such low customer service standards. I will never book with them again in my life.

Works fine until you actually should get a refund.
I have used Auto Europe for many times and always been satisfied. Good price and easy booking.
Last time we had a damage on our rental car. We had to pay the invoice to the rental car company and created an insurance claim. It was handled quickly and we should get a refund within 15-20 working days. That in itself is ridiculous in 2025 but it has now been 30 days. Auto Europe is suddenly hard to get in touch with (you can't call about a done reservation) and they didn't aswer my lasy email at all.

Double charging

I have booked a car in the US for 25 days for October 2025. The rental price has immediatelly deducted from my credit card in May. After I picked up the car I have found out that an addional amount of over 1700 USD has been taken from my credit card. I have not received any explanation, no bill, no receipt. After at least 15 Mails this completely unjustified withdrawal has , after 5 weeks, not been returned and also no clear answer been given. Answers are computer generated answers, the phone numbers given and mentioned on the voucher do not exist. There is in fact no customer support. I give it another 10 days, thereafter i need to take legal steps.

Forced to buy insurance I didn’t need

I booked a rental car through CHECK24 / Auto Europe (Drive on Holidays, Faro).
At pickup, the car was only released after I purchased an additional insurance (“Excess Reduction”), since the rental company required a €1,500 deposit which couldn’t be blocked on my card.
The booking already included full coverage with zero excess.
Customer service was polite but declined any goodwill refund.
Overall okay, but the process felt unfair and not transparent for customers with limited credit limits.

bad experiences

I purchased my rental through AutoEurope.it, confident I was relying on a reliable and transparent intermediary, but unfortunately my experience was anything but positive.
During my last rental, on August 29, 2025, at 9:00 PM at Zaventem Airport (Brussels), at the Europcar counter I was forced to purchase additional assistance insurance for €109.94 simply because I would also be driving in the Netherlands. I was clearly told that without this insurance I would not be able to pick up the car, even though I had already purchased full insurance coverage on AutoEurope.it.
After my trip, I contacted AutoEurope, but instead of helping me resolve the issue, they simply replied that I had signed the contract, ignoring the fact that I was forced to do so in order to pick up the vehicle.
This isn't the first time this has happened: for a previous rental, in November 2024, after booking through AutoEurope.it, I was charged €40 more at the Europcar counter for an additional driver than expected. Only after insisting did I get a refund.
Overall, AutoEurope doesn't really protect its customers when problems arise with partner companies. They simply act as an intermediary and, in effect, leave the customer completely on their own.
A terrible experience: I strongly advise against using them.

Contract Breach, Fraudulent Delays & Privacy Violations – No Refund for Weeks

I am writing this review to warn others: Auto Europe Deutschland GmbH has failed to honour my legitimate claim for a refund (EUR 380.83, Booking #22624754 / Ticket #4601054) and has instead engaged in stalling tactics.

My experience:

I submitted all required documents (rental agreement, payment proof, invoices, photos) multiple times, in line with Auto Europe’s own rules.

Despite this, the company kept demanding full bank statements showing sensitive personal data — an unlawful request and a clear violation of GDPR.

Several deadlines have passed. I received no refund, no valid explanation, and only repeated generic responses.

This conduct amounts to breach of contract, fraud, and a severe breach of trust.

What I expect:

Immediate reimbursement of the full amount owed, with no further delay or unlawful demands. I have already escalated the matter legally, filed complaints with consumer protection and data protection authorities, and will pursue all available remedies.

Warning to other customers:

Be very cautious. If you rely on Auto Europe’s “excess refund insurance,” document everything carefully and be prepared for legal escalation. Their current practices show serious risks for customers.

Impossible to contact

We had an issue with our booking when we went to collect the car, and have not been able to get in touch with Autoeurope at all. The number leads to an automated option, which does not work and then we get hung up on. There is no other way to contact them.

nothing but blame deflection

The customer service says I got scammed by Europcar in Dublin and there's nothing they can do on their end. As far as I'm concerned, this isn't acceptable. Either they're cooperating with scammers or Auto Europe are the scammers themselves. At no point was anybody willing to take responsibility for them charging me 2x what I had originally booked for, quite apart from the hours I've spent dealing with these two companies sending me around in circles, each deflecting blame from themselves to the other.

Scam Alert!!

Scam Alert!!

I rented a car on the AutoEurope website and bought all the insurance. But when we went to the airport to get the car, they said you have to do more insurance, which will cost over 200€ otherwise, we don't give you the car. So we didn't take it, of course (because when I was renting the car I already paid for full insurance, there was no more insurance to buy). They said okay we cancel the contract, Auto Europe may cut 10-20€, but the rest will be almost fully refunded. So I called Auto Europe. They told me to send an email. I sent it. I sent e-mails 5 times, and in a week, I got no answer. Auto Europe is a scam. I complained them everywhere, now I am dealing with all this bureaucracy to get back my own money that they tried to rob!

[UPDATE]

Auto Europe publicly replied here, claiming that they are just a broker and the local supplier refused to give the car due to extra insurance.

This is unacceptable. I paid Auto Europe directly. The voucher included full insurance.

They are now hiding behind the local company and refusing to refund me.
I have filed complaints with:
- DGCCRF (France)
- ECC-Net France
- EU ODR Platform
- UFC Que Choisir
- My bank (chargeback)

This is a warning to all future customers.

Reply from Auto Europe Deutschland GmbH

Dear Mr. Hazal Hatip,

We are truly sorry to hear about the frustrating experience you had with your recent car rental and the subsequent difficulties with our customer service. We understand your disappointment and the feeling of being misled, and for that, we sincerely apologise.

We've conducted an internal review of your case, and unfortunately, we see that our Customer Service team has already addressed your refund request. We understand their response was not what you hoped for, and we regret any distress this has caused.

We want to clarify the situation from our perspective as a broker. While you purchased insurance through the Auto Europe website, this typically refers to a third-party excess reimbursement policy. When you arrived at the rental counter, the local car hire company would have offered their own insurance products, which are separate from any third-party policies you might have purchased. These additional insurances, while optional, are often presented by the local supplier to reduce your liability or excess directly with them.

We understand the local supplier may have indicated that you would receive a near-full refund. However, our records indicate that our Customer Service team was unable to proceed with a refund request because, from the rental company's standpoint, there was no proof to substantiate your claim regarding an offer of additional insurance or a refusal to provide the vehicle. Furthermore, the local rental company operates under a strict "No Refund" policy in such circumstances.

As Auto Europe acts solely as a broker between you and the local car hire company, our ability to intervene in disputes once the rental has been declined at the counter is very limited. The direct contract for the car rental is between you and the local supplier. We rely on their terms and conditions, and without their agreement or evidence to support a claim against their stated policies, we are unfortunately unable to force a refund on their behalf. We understand this can feel incredibly unfair, and we sympathise with your position.

We deeply regret that this has led to such a negative experience and that you feel your money has been taken unfairly. We assure you this was not our intention. We understand this explanation may not change the outcome, but we hope it clarifies why we are unable to take further action in this specific instance.

We sincerely apologise again for the distress and inconvenience this has caused you.

Sincerely,

The Auto Europe Team

Worst experience ever!

Worst experience ever!
We booked our rental car to pick up from Olbia airport with Auto Europe, the vendor was Gold Car. They did not accept my driver's license even though it was valid. They told me that they need a European/international driving license. However, this information was not shared with us when we did the booking on the website.

If you are coming outside of Europe, do not rent a car from them. The call center did not pick up the phone for 10-15 minutes straight. We called them multiple times until we got hold of them. Even though I could not get the rental car, they did not refund me either. They said they cannot refund me as this was stated somewhere unreadable on the voucher. They did not even try to help out or cancel the booking either; they said you can only do it 48 hours before. I did not know this was going to happen, so what do you expect? Scammers.

We went on and rented out another car easily with no hustle at the airport by another provider. So STAY AWAY!!!
