We cut speeding in Singapore by 2/3rds using a system built by just 4 people in 3 months. Singapore Police Force had a problem where using speed cameras took a lot of manpower. A person had to manually review the footage, identify the license plate, and key in the relevant case details. Each case took about 10 minutes and really limited how much we could enforce. For our 2024 Hack for Public Good, we built Roadbuster (https://lnkd.in/eYFaQKTE) that uses computer vision to identify speeding license plates and pre-fill the case details. A person just needs to check everything is correct before submitting. In just 3 months Traffic Police had integrated this into their operations and could start enforcement. Over the next year, sites where we turned on the system had speeding go down by 66%. We’re sure this is not a coincidence because the trend follows for cameras we turned on later. The pattern is clear; for every site we enable, over the next 52 weeks speeding at that location drops by about 2/3rds. 2 years later, TP have upgraded their systems to take on this capability and Roadbuster is being retired. In that time we processed 120,000 speeding cases and helped prevent an unknowable number of accidents. It has been several years since my last trip to Cambodia in 2018, and the country has changed so much. From the impressive Techo International Airport to new malls, residences, industrial buildings, and EV showrooms, I saw so many new and ongoing developments during the drive from the airport to the Grab office. I was greeted with warmth and hospitality throughout my short three-day trip and enjoyed plenty of great local food between meetings. However, it also dawned on me that the streets are quieter than before, likely due to the drop in tourists. ​During my meeting with His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol and His Excellency Undersecretary Chhor Sunhong, we discussed the slowdown in tourism, its impact on our industry, and how Grab can leverage our platform and regional presence to support tourism recovery. We also explored potential collaborations around the government’s MSME Hub to help drive demand to local small businesses. Ultimately, strong consumer demand is key to sustaining driver livelihoods and small businesses. ​I also had the opportunity to discuss our plans to support driver EV transition with His Excellency Minister Keo Rottanak. We share the belief that this transition will build more resilient livelihoods and shield driver- and delivery-partners from fuel price volatility. ​We see tremendous potential in the country and will continue to introduce innovative services that contribute to Cambodia's economic development. I want to nerd out about typography for a second. The Lay's logo is THE BEST example I've seen of brands translating their logo into Thai. They have done such a good job that it took me a while to realise that I wasn't reading the English. They have very cleverly matched the style of each English letter to a Thai character. The English: Lay's The Thai: เลย์ It's so impressive the way the designer has manipulated the letters so they kind of look like the English ones, while still maintaining enough legibility to work in Thai. Even the silencing mark in Thai matches up to the apostrophe in English! Love seeing brands going the extra mile to make things work cross culturally.

Thailand’s next phase of digital commerce will be shaped by more than consumer growth. It will be shaped by how businesses transform. I recently had the opportunity to speak at an Australian Delegation Briefing hosted by Austrade at Vitafoods Asia 2026, sharing perspectives on Thailand’s e-commerce landscape and the opportunities for Australian brands. Preparing for the discussion reinforced a broader shift I believe is increasingly important for businesses operating in Thailand and Southeast Asia: Digital commerce is moving from a channel strategy to an integral part of the broader business model. Three shifts stand out. First, digital commerce is becoming infrastructure for growth. Thailand has moved well beyond the early stages of e-commerce adoption. Consumers increasingly discover, research and purchase online, making digital platforms an important gateway to the market. For international brands, this means digital commerce needs to be embedded in the broader growth model—not treated simply as another sales channel. Second, as the market matures, trust and quality become increasingly important sources of competitive advantage. This is particularly relevant in health and wellness, where consumers look beyond the product itself to authenticity, provenance, quality and credibility. Sustainable growth therefore depends not only on reaching more consumers, but on building the capabilities and experiences that earn their trust. Third, AI is beginning to change how commerce is executed. The opportunity goes well beyond customer-facing personalization. AI can increasingly support the broader commerce engine—from product content and seller diagnosis to marketing, logistics, after-sales service and analytics. The real opportunity is not simply to add AI to existing processes, but to improve how work gets done—making execution faster, smarter and more scalable, while enabling teams to focus on higher-value decisions. For me, this points to a broader transformation: Technology is no longer sitting alongside the business. It is increasingly becoming embedded in how businesses create value, make decisions and execute. That shift matters particularly for international brands entering Thailand and Southeast Asia. The opportunity is not simply to participate in a fast-growing digital market, but to build the capabilities and operating models required to scale sustainably. Early in my Bain career, I had a few days with almost nothing to do. On the beach. So I went to the graphics team. At the time, I badly wanted to learn how to make better slides. I had templates. I had sample decks. I could study them for hours. But I wasn’t learning much. Then I had an idea. I asked if I could simply stand behind the graphics team and watch them work. They said yes. I watched them take a good slide and, with a few clicks, turn it into a great one. The speed was incredible. I couldn’t keep quiet for long. “Why did you move that?” “Why this font size?” “Why not put this here?” “What are you seeing that I’m not seeing?” I’m sure I was annoying. But they were incredibly gracious. They explained. They showed me. They let me watch them think. And, I suspect, sometimes they had to stay later to make up for the time a first-year consultant had taken away from their work. I learned a lot. From watching someone who was much better than me do the work. Today, AI can create a slide (and a deck!) in seconds and improve the design far faster than I ever could. That’s fantastic. But I sometimes wonder what we lose when we only get the outcome. The slide gets better. But do we still learn how someone made it better? And perhaps more importantly, do we lose something else along the way? The annoyance of a beginner asking too many questions. The patience of someone willing to teach. The grace of someone who could have simply said, “Just let me do it.” I learned from the slide. But I also learned from Diana Lee and Ming-Jie, Clairthys Lee. Thank you both
