  • the disclosure provides a pesticidal composition for controlling stink bugs.
  • the composition can include insecticides with one or more sugars as bait.
  • the disclosure also provides methods of controlling stink bugs comprising contacting vegetation or the locus thereof an effective amount of the pesticidal composition sufficient to control stink bugs BACKGROUND
  • insect/mite pest control in agriculture may include spraying of the insecticide solution, e.g., foliar application. Perfect coverage of the plants may promote the contact and feeding action of the insecticides over the insects. However, poor coverage of the plants can occur due to several circumstances, such as: dense canopy, high temperatures, low air humidity, among others; or pest biology, as hidden insects or mites that that are not exposed to the sprayed insecticides or those that are stressed by the conventional insecticide application may search for shelter in non-sprayed areas (for example, under straw). Thus, the insect population after some period of time can come back to feed on the plants and continue causing damage to the crop.

Description

STINK BUG CONTROL COMPOSITION AND
METHOD
CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION
[0001] This Application claims the benefit of, and priority from, U.S. provisional applications serial numbers 63/609936, filed on December 14, 2023.
FIELD OF THIS DISCLOSURE
[0002] The disclosure provides a pesticidal composition for controlling stink bugs. The composition can include insecticides with one or more sugars as bait. The disclosure also provides methods of controlling stink bugs comprising contacting vegetation or the locus thereof an effective amount of the pesticidal composition sufficient to control stink bugs BACKGROUND
[0003] Generally, insect/mite pest control in agriculture may include spraying of the insecticide solution, e.g., foliar application.
SUMMARY
[0004] Recognized herein is a need for a better insecticide solution. The disclosure provides a pesticidal composition for controlling stink bugs. The composition can include insecticides with one or more sugars. The disclosure also provides methods of controlling stink bugs comprising contacting vegetation or the locus thereof with an effective amount of the pesticidal composition sufficient to control stink bugs.
[0005] An aspect of the disclosure provides a pesticidal composition for controlling stink bugs. The pesticidal composition for controlling stink bugs comprises (a) sulfoxaflor, (b) /c/fl/At/tz-cyhalothrin, and (c) a sugar, where (a) and (b) are present in the pesticidal composition at a weight ratio of (a):(b) from about 1 : 10 to about 10: 1, and the pesticidal composition comprises the sugar from about 20% to about 90% by weight. In some embodiments of the pesticidal composition, the weight ratio of (a):(b) is about 2:3. In some embodiments of the pesticidal composition, the weight ratio of (a):(b) is about 5:6. In some embodiments, the sugar is present from about 40% to about 80% by weight. In some embodiments of the pesticidal composition, (a), (b), and (c) are present in the pesticidal composition at a weight ratio of from about 1 : 1.5:5 to about 1 : 1.5: 1000. In some embodiments of the pesticidal composition, (a), (b), and (c) are present in the pesticidal composition at a weight ratio of from about 1 : 1.2:5 to about 1 : 1.2:1000. In some embodiments of the pesticidal composition, the sugar is selected from monosaccharides, disaccharides, oligosaccharides, polysaccharides, or combinations thereof. In some embodiments of the pesticidal composition, the sugar is selected from glucose, fructose, galactose, mannose, ribose, sucrose, maltose, lactose, molasses or treacle, trehalose, dextrose, raffinose, stachyose, maltotriose, lactulose, isomaltose, melibiose, starch, glycogen, cellulose, chitin, hyaluronic acid, peptidoglycan, or a combination thereof. In some embodiments of the pesticidal composition, the sugar comprises invert sugar, corn steep liquid, or a combination thereof. In some embodiments of the pesticidal composition, (a) and (b) is formulated comprising petroleum distillates, xylene or xylene range aromatic solvent or combinations thereof. In some embodiments of the pesticidal composition, (c) is formulated comprising an anti-freezing agent, a flow aid agent, a dispersant, a thickening agent, a bee repellent, or combinations thereof. In some embodiments, the pesticidal composition is formulated comprising the bee repellent from about 0.2% to about 5% by weight and the bee repellent is ammonium acetate. In some embodiments, the pesticidal composition is formulated comprising the anti-freezing agents at from about 0.2% to about 5.0% by weight, the diluent agents at from about 10% to about 90% by weight, the dispersants at from about 0.0% to about 5.0% by weight, the flow aid agents at from about 0.00% to about 1.00% by weight, and the thickening agents at from about 0.00% to about 1.50% by weight.
[0006] An additional aspect of the disclosure provides a method of controlling stink bugs comprising contacting vegetation or the locus thereof with an effective amount of the pesticidal composition sufficient to control stink bugs. In some embodiments, the effective amount of the pesticidal composition comprises applying sulfoxaflor from about 5 grams per hectare (g/ha) to about 100 g/ha. In some embodiments, the effective amount of the pesticidal composition comprises applying /z/ v/zz-cyhalothrin from about 5 g/ha to about 150 g/ha. In some embodiments, the effective amount of the pesticidal composition comprises applying bifenthrin from about 5 g/ha to about 300 g/ha.
[0007] While not wishing to be bound by theory, the subject matter provided herein has been shown to provide high efficacy of pest control believed to be because the insects actively search for the droplets of the subject matter mixed with insecticide on which to feed and, consequently, there is movement in the direction from the pest to the insecticide. Thus, the subject matter provided herein results in increased exposure of the insects to the insecticide by attracting the insect population, including hidden insects and by stimulating ingestion of the insecticide, thereby enhancing the insecticide potency, level of control, and resi duality of control.
[0008] The utilization of novel sugar probe baiting technology provided herein could result in a reduction of 50% of the insecticide while achieving even better control than the standalone foliar spray of the same chemical. If soybean growers would use, for example, Expedition™ for one of the two applications for stink bug control, the utilization of composition provided herein could result in reduction of a huge amount of sulfoxaflor and lambda- cyhalothrin inputs in the crop every year.

[0087] Field trials were conducted in open field conditions with soybean plants at reproductive stage under natural infestation of several species of stink bugs. Drone applications were carried on randomized blocks with minimum size of 200 square meters (m2) for 4 reps, equipped by DJI T-40 rotor system with velocity of flight 25 kilometers per hectare (km/ha) at height of 3 meters (m) from the top of the plants. The pesticidal composition was applied in water volume from 10 liters per hectare (L/ha). Rates of Expedition™ (Sample 1) and COMP-1 by drone applications were listed in Table 2.
Table 2. Field trials with drone application for spraying Sample 1 and COMP-1.
Figure imgf000041_0001
[0088] Insect population was evaluated before and on different timings after drone applications of the pesticidal composition. Insect population was counted for nymphs (combining 3rd, 4th and 5th instar), adults and total (nymphs + adults), and reported as "number per 1 rowmeter basis" by using beat cloth. Counts of 1 -meter were obtained by shaking 1 -meter of 1-row on to a beat cloth and were assessed 3-4 points per plot. Count data was transformed to percent (%) control of the untreated using Abbott's transformation. Average was obtained and analyzed by Tukey 10%. The stink bugs were evaluated considering all species such as Euschitus her os (E. heros), Piezodorus guildinii, Dichelops spp., Edessa meditabunda and Acrosternum hilare.
Table 3. Stink bug control and increment on efficacy of full and half of field rate of Sample 1 with addition of COMP-1
Figure imgf000041_0002
Figure imgf000042_0001
[0089] Results showed higher protection efficacy achieved by Sample 1 with COMP-1 over Sample 1 alone, as illustrated in Table 3. Evaluation interval was taken at 1 day after application (1DAA1) to 14 days after application (14DAA1) as shown. For Sample 1 full rate alone application (300 mL/ha), % Control reached the highest (65.7%) at 10 days after drone application (10DAA1). When applied with COMP-1, the highest % Control occurred at around 7-10 days after application (7DAA1 or 10DAA1) for full rate (79.7%), and at 10 days after application for half rate (87.0%). % Increment was calculated over the value of % Control of Sample 1 full rate solo (4th column in Table 3). When applying COMP-1 with half or full rate of Sample 1, better control of stink bugs than Sample 1 alone was observed from 7DAA1 to 14DAA1. Further, at both 10DAA1 and 14DAA1, % increment for half rate of Sample 1 with COMP-1 exceeded that for full rate of Sample 1 with COMP-1. Thus, utilization of sugar in combination with sulfoxaflor and /craAU-cyhalothrin has been demonstrated to reduce the need for delivery of these two active ingredients by at least 50% while controlling stink bugs.
[0090] A mixture of 100 g of sulfoxaflor and 150 g of lamhda-cy\\a\oWvm per liter is among the most used insecticides for E. heros in Brazil, for example, Expedition™, SILVER® FUSION, HAFFOR®, and SORTIC®. The amount of 0.3 L of insecticide per hectare equivalent to 30 and 45 g of sulfoxaflor and /r»7?/?cU-cyhalothrin per hectare respectively. Stink bug control requires two insecticide applications. Then a total of 82 million hectares were treated targeting stink bugs, based on 41 million hectares of soybean planted in the 2021-2022 season. If soybean growers in Brazil would apply the novel sugar probe baiting technology provided herein for one of the two applications for stink bug control, the utilization of invention provided herein could result in reduction of sulfoxaflor and /amZxsfcz-cyhalothrin inputs in the crop equivalent to more than 615,000 kg of sulfoxaflor and more than 922,500 kilograms of /cw/AcU-cyhalothrin every year.
Example 3: Sugar increases efficacy of insecticide in stink bug control.
[0091] Field trials were conducted in open field conditions with soybean plants at reproductive stage under natural infestation of several species of stink bugs. Tractor applications equipped with nozzle type TTI110015 generating large drops at 25 pounds per square inch (psi) of pressure, and velocity of 5 kilometers per hour (km/h), were carried on randomized blocks with minimum size of 90 m2 for 4 reps. The pesticidal composition was applied in water volume from 100 liters per hectare (L/ha). Rates of Expedition™ (Sample 1), COMP-1, and probes 17 and 18 by tractor applications were listed in Table 4.
Table 4. Field trials with tractor application for spraying Sample 1 and probes

The stink bugs were evaluated considering all species such as Euschitus herns. Piezodorus guildinii Dichelops spp., Edessa meditabunda and Acroslemum hilare.
Table 5. Stink bug control and increment on efficacy of full and half of field rate of Sample 1 with addition of COMP-1 and probes 17 and 18.
Figure imgf000044_0001
[0093] % Control of stink bugs for Sample 1 full rate solo, Sample 1 half rate and full rate with COMP-1, Sample 1 full rate with probe 17 and probe 18 were listed in Table 5. % Increment was calculated over the value of % Control of Sample 1 full rate solo (2nd column in Table 5)
[0094] Results showed higher protection efficacy achieved by Sample 1 with COMP-1, probes 17 or 18 over Sample 1 alone, as illustrated in Table 5. Evaluation interval was taken at 1 day after application (1DAA1) to 14 days after application (14DAA1) as shown. For Sample 1 full rate alone application (300 mL/ha) and Sample 1 full rate with probe 18, % Control reached the highest of 52.5% and 83.4%, respectively, at 7 days after tractor application. For Sample 1 half rate (150 mL/ha) with COMP-1, Sample 1 full rate with COMP-1, and Sample 1 full rate with probe 17, % Control reached the highest of 83.3%, 82.5%, and 87.4%, respectively, at 3 days after tractor application. When COMP-1 was applied with half or full rate of Sample 1 by tractor application, better control of stink bugs over Sample 1 alone was observed from 1 day after application (1DAA1) to 14 days after application (14DAA1). The % Increments for Sample 1 half rate with COMP-1 were in range from 38.5% (at 7DAA1) to 244.8% (at 3DAA1), with an average of 109.8%. The % Increments for Sample 1 full rate with COMP-1 were in range from 11.3% (at 1DAA1) to 241.6% (at 3DAA1), with an average of 90.6%. Thus, utilization of sugar probe COMP-1 provided herein can drop at least 50% of Sample 1 usage while achieving even better control than the stand-alone foliar spray of the same chemical.
[0095] Increment of efficacy was observed from 3DAA1 to 14DAA1 for both Sample 1 full rate applied with probe 17 and Sample 1 full rate applied with probe 18. % Increment for Sample 1 full rate applied with probe 17 were in in range from 59.0% to 261.2% with an average of 141.5%. % Increment for Sample 1 full rate applied with probe 18 were in in range from 42.6% to 212.0% with an average of 111.9%. Thus, Sample 1 applied with probes 17 and 18 showed higher protection efficacy over Sample 1 alone. Applying probes 17 and 18 will save cost about 20% comparing to COMP-1.
Example 4: insecticides are applied with COMP-1 and sugar probes 1-7, [0096] As illustrated in Table 6, formulations of sugar probes 1-7 were prepared. Table 6. Formulation of probes 1-7.
