Description
The present invention relates to a laundry washing/drying machine comprising a front door having a mechanically improved front door locking mechanism.
The laundry washing/drying appliances such as washing machines comprise a rotary drum in which cloth items are placeable and accessible via a front door. An electric motor provides the rotary drum to be driven by means of a pulley mechanism. Laundry washing/drying machines have front doors typically allowing access into the rotary drum for loading and unloading the laundry to be processed.

An electric motor provides the rotary drum to be driven by means of a pulley mechanism. Laundry washing/drying machines have front doors typically allowing access into the rotary drum for loading and unloading the laundry to be processed.
A front door locking mechanism typically functions in the manner that a handle associated with a handle lever is rotatable to drive a hook lever, the latter being actuatable to lock or unlock the front door. The handle lever and the hook lever therefore cooperate to initiate the proper positioning of the mechanical components such that an engagement end of the hook lever is displaced a certain distance to engage into or to be released from a locking slot.
A problem associated with the above-described mechanical design lies in that while a given user attempts to lock the front door of the laundry washing/drying machine by way of closing the same relative to the door opening, he/she may experience that although the front door is forced in the closing and locking direction, the door remains unlocked. In other words, it might occur that although sufficient pressure is applied, an engagement head of the lock mechanism cannot be urged into mating relation with a respective locking recess. This problem may typically lead to exertion of excessive force to cause breaking of the handle or handle cover. This might particularly occur if one persistently applies pressure under the mistaken impression that the engagement head can be further moved and locking can be as such effectuated. The situation will in the least cause non-initiation of the laundry washing/drying operation as the secured position of the engagement end cannot be ensured by the electronic control unit.
The present invention therefore proposes an arrangement according to which the engagement end can be locked when it is advanced to the appropriate locking position.
A prior art publication in the technical field of the present invention may be referred to as EP2369050 among others, the document disclosing a door-locking device, comprising a frame provided with an opening wherein a hook associated with a door of a washing machine or of an electric household appliance in general can introduce and engage with the frame when the door is closed. A locking pawl can take a first position wherein it is withdrawn preventing supply of the household appliance and a second position wherein it is extracted, permitting supply of the household appliance. A moving slider is arranged within the frame, the slider having a first slot suitable to interact with the hook, a second slot with which the locking pawl can be engaged in the second position, when the slider is in the locking position to keep the hook engaged with the frame by the first slot and when the door is closed. The door-locking device further comprises safety means provided with control means provided with control means, the safety means being suitable to interact with the slider to control its position.
The present invention provides an arrangement in relation to laundry washing/drying machines having an improved front door opening mechanism, as defined by the characterizing features in Claim 1.
Primary object of the present invention is hence to provide a laundry washing/drying machine with a front door locking mechanism which can effectively be locked and unlocked without exerting pressure.
The present invention proposes a laundry washing/drying machine with a locking mechanism having an engagement head structurally configured to advance a locking arm by a recess contact portion projecting against lateral walls of a locking arm recess in the engaged state of the engagement head with a safety latch.
The projecting recess contact portion is adapted to project perpendicular to the lateral walls of the locking arm recess and formed to protrude from a line projected from or intersecting with a safety latch contact surface between the engagement head and the safety latch in the engaged state of the two.

The present invention relates to a laundry washing/drying machine (1) such as a washing machine comprising a rotary drum, in which the laundry is to be placed and an electric motor rotating the drum. A front door (3) typically allows access into the drum for loading or unloading laundry through an access opening (2). The front door (3) of the laundry washing/drying machine (1) is conventionally openable around a door hinge (5) and a lock mechanism (6) releasably urges an engagement head (11) into a locked position.
According to the present invention, a handle (7) is provided such that rotation thereof around a handle pivot pin (not shown) drives a hook lever (9), the latter being rotatable around a hook pivot pin (10) and actuatable to lock or unlock the front door (3). The handle (7) and the hook lever (9) therefore cooperate to effect locking and unlocking of the front door (3).
The handle (7) displaces relative to a handle cover (8) while the latter is fixedly attached to main body (4) of the front door (3) in the manner to be covering the handle (7). The amount of displacement of the handle (7) or the angle swept by the same relative to the handle cover (8) determines the amount of rotation of the hook lever (9) to effectuate engagement and disengagement of the locking member, i.e. the engagement head (11) in a proper manner as will be delineated hereinafter.
It is to be noted that it might happen that although the engagement head (11) is adequately advanced and introduced into a locking arm recess (15), the fixed position of the locking arm (14) is only ensured by an electrically-driven locking pin (17) forced into latched engagement with a locking pin slot (18) of the locking arm (14). If the locking arm (14) cannot be adequately displaced by the engagement head (11) entering the locking arm recess (15), the locking pin slot (18) cannot reach an aligned position with the locking pin (17) so that the latter cannot lock the position of the locking arm (14) and prevent its displacement back and forth along the longitudinal axis thereof. It is established that this situation is very common and primarily stem from the fact that a plurality of mechanically cooperating inner parts are all manufactured with certain clearances.
Exertion of excessive force to the handle (7) in this case cannot provide further displacement of the locking arm (14) along its longitudinal axis and may even cause breaking of the handle (7) or handle cover (8). A solution to this problem might be redesigning of the mechanical components which may substantially affect production costs and contribute to the overall costs in a mass-produced appliance as a large number of individual elements is needed to be redesigned and accordingly manufactured. The present invention alternatively provides that the engagement head’s (11) improved structure ensures correct positioning of the locking arm (14) without changing the amount of displacement of the handle (7) or the angle swept by the same relative to the handle cover (8) as well as the amount of rotation of the hook lever (9). Therefore, the present invention efficiently ensures lockability with minimal need for mechanical redesign.
The engagement head (11) of the hook lever (9), when driven by the handle (7), enters into the locking arm’s (14) recess. In the locked position, it maintains a safety latch contact surface (13) with a safety latch (12) such that the two parts remain in mechanical engagement with each other during locked state of the front door (3). Rotational movement imparted to the handle (7) by the user is therefore transferred to the hook lever (9) to effectuate engagement with the safety latch (12) while the engagement head (11) remains in the locking arm recess (15) and is maintained as such by the locking pin (17).
According to the present invention, the engagement head (11) is structurally configured to maintain an enlarged recess contact portion (16) contact with an inner wall portion of the locking arm recess (15) in its engaged state with the safety latch (12). The engagement head (11) is provided with the recess contact portion (16) projecting along the longitudinal axis of the locking arm (14) in the engaged state of the engagement head (11) with the safety latch (12). The protruding recess contact portion (16) starts from a projected line (dashed line in Fig. 7), the projected line comprising the furthest point of the safety latch contact surface (13) in the locking direction of the engagement head (11). In other words, the safety latch contact surface’s (13) furthest point in the direction of the safety latch (12) in the engaged state of the engagement head (11) with the safety latch (12) determines the line perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the safety latch (12) or locking arm (14), from which line the engagement head (11) is provided with the projecting recess contact portion (16). Fig. 7 demonstrates an enlarged view of detail X given in Fig. 3b while the hook lever (9) is driven to engage with the safety latch (12) and the locking arm’s (14) locking position is reached according to the present invention.
Likewise, Fig. 9 demonstrates an enlarged view of detail X given in Fig. 3b while the handle (7) is rotated to drive the hook lever (9) where the engagement head (11) can easily enter into the locking arm recess (15) due to its narrowed neck portion (19) according to the present invention.
In a nutshell, the present invention proposes a laundry washing/drying machine (1) comprising a rotary drum in which the laundry is placeable, an electric motor rotating the rotary drum and a front door (3) allowing access into the rotary drum for loading or unloading laundry through an access opening (2), the front door (3) being openable around a door hinge (5) in the manner that a lock mechanism (6) comprising a handle (7) in mechanical communication with a hook lever (9) releasably secures an engagement head (11) by which the front door (3) is lockable or unlockable.
In one embodiment of the present invention, the engagement head (11) is structurally configured to maintain a recess contact portion (16) contact with a locking arm recess (15) of a locking arm (14) in an engaged state with a safety latch (12) maintaining therewith a safety latch contact surface (13). The recess contact portion (16) projects along longitudinal axis of the locking arm (14) in the engaged state of the engagement head (11) with the safety latch (12), the projecting recess contact portion (16) starting from a line perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the locking arm (14) and projected from the furthest point of the safety latch contact surface (13) in the direction of the safety latch (12).
In accordance with a further embodiment of the present invention, the engagement head (11) is configured to maintain the recess contact portion (16) contact with an inner wall portion of the locking arm recess (15) in its engaged state with the safety latch (12).
In accordance with a further embodiment of the present invention, the engagement head’s (11) position in the locking arm recess (15) is fixed by a locking pin (17) forced into latched engagement with a locking pin slot (18) of the locking arm (14).
In accordance with a further embodiment of the present invention, the engagement head (11) maintains the safety latch contact surface (13) with the safety latch (12) such that the two parts remain in mechanical engagement with each other during locked state of the front door (3).
In accordance with a further embodiment of the present invention, the engagement head (11) is provided with a narrowed neck portion (19) compensating the projecting recess contact portion (16) such that it is rotatably introducible into the locking arm recess (15).
Therefore, while a given user reaches for the handle cover (8) to unlock the front door (3) of the laundry washing/drying machine (1) by way of retracting the handle (7) relative to the handle cover (8), advancement of the locking arm (14) by the engagement head (11) of the hook lever (9) is ensured by a projecting recess contact portion (16) of the head contacting inner walls of the locking arm recess (15) so as to further displace the locking arm (14). The engagement head (11) at the same time remains in engagement with the safety latch (12) by a contact surface thereinbetween. The projecting recess contact portion (16) is designed to protrude starting from a line intersecting with the furthest point of the safety latch contact surface (13) in the direction of the safety latch (12) or in the counter-clockwise locking direction of the hook lever (9), the line extending perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the safety latch (12) or locking arm (14). The invention therefore provides a convenient solution to the problem of misalignment between the locking pin (17) and the locking pin slot (18), eliminating the need for redesigning a large number of mechanical elements as the amount of displacement of the handle (7) or the angle swept by the same relative to the handle cover (8) as well as the amount of rotation of the hook lever (9) remain unchanged.
