- the invention relates to apparatus and methods for controlled delivery of heated fluids to a subject, such as for example for irrigation, infusion, or tumescence of a subject during surgical procedures.
- An infusion pump is used to provide controlled delivery of the heated fluids such that the tubing used to deliver the fluids to the subject can be inserted and removed from the pump without opening the tubing system, thereby eliminating a potential source of infection.
- Surgical procedures such as for example liposuction and abdominal surgery, can involve irrigation, infusion, or tumescence of portions of the patient with large volumes of fluids. Irrigation of the patient with cold fluids contributes to perioperative hypothermia, which has been associated with increased morbidity and mortality (Karalapillai et ah, 201 1). Hypothermia causes patient discomfort and can lead to, for example, impaired wound healing, more frequent wound infection, cardiac events and clotting abnormalities. Infusion of warm fluid during surgery has been found to be effective in keeping patients nearly normothermic (Xu et ah, 2010). Devices for warming fluids administered to patients have been developed (e.g., U.S. Patent Nos.
- the invention provides systems and methods for controlled delivery of heated fluids to a subject where the system comprises a tubing system for delivery of a fluid from a fluid reservoir to the subject, wherein a first portion of the tubing system comprises tubing for insertion in an infusion pump without opening the tubing system and a second portion of the tubing system comprises tubing for being heated by a heating device.

- Tubing suitable for insertion in and removal from an infusion pump without opening the tubing system includes, for example, MENTOR® AUTOFUSE tubing (Mentor, Irving, TX).
- Any suitable system for heating or warming the fluid that is to be delivered to the patient can be used with this system.
- Devices for warming fluids administered to patients have been described (e.g., U.S. Patent Nos. 7,094,219, 7, 158,719, 7,657,163, 7,865,072, and 7,891,974).
- Preferred warming devices for irrigating subjects include RANGER® Irrigation Fluid Warming Disposable Set Model 24750, Arizant Healthcare Inc., Eden Prairie MN.
- the invention also provides a tubing system for controlled delivery of heated fluids to a subject comprising tubing for being heated by a heating device and tubing for insertion in an infusion pump without opening the tubing system.
