Abstract

The instant invention discloses a process for the preparation of Sevelamer carbonate having less than 500 ppm chloride from Sevelamer hydrochloride through a two-stage process involving reaction of said hydrochloride salt with a base to obtain Sevelamer base having less than 500 ppm chloride which upon subsequent carbonation yields the Sevalamer carbonate having less than 500 ppm chloride.
