Abstract

 上部基板(第1の基板)(2)と、下部基板(第2の基板)(3)と、上部基板(2)及び下部基板(3)の間に形成された表示用空間(S)の内部で有効表示領域(P1)側または非有効表示領域(P2)側に移動可能に封入された導電性液体(16)とを具備した表示素子(10)において、互いに独立して所定の電圧範囲内の電圧が印加可能に構成された信号電極(4)、参照電極(5)、及び走査電極(6)を設ける。また、有効表示領域(P1)側及び非有効表示領域(P2)側にそれぞれ設置されるように下部基板(3)側に設けられた参照電極(5)及び走査電極(6)に対して、同一の電圧(第3の電圧及び第4の電圧)を印加する。
