Abstract

A glass plate manufacturing method for manufacturing a glass plate for display substrates, especially a glass plate for flat panel display substrates, or a glass plate for photomasks, free of bubbles which are a problem when the glass plate is used without causing any local bulge on the surface of the glass plate and any local residual stress and birefringence within the glass plate when a laser beam is projected to the glass plate. The method is characterized in that bubbles are reduced or extinguished by applying to the bubbles in a glass plate (or a glass ribbon at its glass plate manufacturing process) a laser beam with a wavelength to which the absorptance of the glass plate (or the glass ribbon) is 30% or more at a temperature at which the viscosity of the glass lies in the range from 107 to 1014.5 dPa s.
