  • the filament of known artificial hair is a monofilament that is obtained by means of extrusion of a synthetic material such as for example polyester, nylon or fashion acrylic (Nomex®) .
  • the thickness of known artificial hair varies between 0.025 mm and 0.09 mm, depending on for what application the artificial hair has been made.
  • Artificial hair for dolls may have a diameter of 0.025 mm or more, whereas artificial hair for human use should have a diameter of at least 0.06 mm in order to have sufficient mechanical strength.
  • artificial hair with a diameter of 0.05 mm or less appears to be insufficiently strong and entails a risk of breaking off while the hair is being combed.
  • Another disadvantage of the known artificial hair is that, in particular when the monofilament is made of polyamide or a co-polyamide, the pigments will migrate from the monofilament under particular conditions or when using specific conditioners, as a result of which the artificial hair will lose its color or as a result of which color differences may occur in the artificial hair.
  • Another disadvantage of known artificial hair is that it has what is called a false light reflection for an incidence of light at a certain angle.
  • dark artificial hair may have an orange glow due to such a false reflection, which is highly undesirable.
  • the aforesaid false reflection is particularly observed with artificial hair whose monofilament is made on the basis of polyester or nylon.
  • the present invention aims to remedy one or several of the above-mentioned and other disadvantages.
  • the invention concerns artificial hair which mainly comprises two or several filaments that are mutually twined or plaited and/or that are provided with a common coating.
  • An advantage of the present invention is that the fibers can be made relatively thin. For, by twining or plaiting the filaments of the artificial hair, an artificial hair is obtained that is stronger in the coaxial direction than known artificial hair with a comparable diameter.
  • artificial hair according to the invention can be made with a diameter that is equal to or smaller than 0.05 millimeter and with a strength that is comparable to or greater than the strength of natural human hair of the head.
  • the fibers are preferably mutually twined or plaited, and there is a common coating round these fibers.
  • ⁇ n advantage of this preferred embodiment is that the structure of the artificial hair strongly resembles that of natural hair which, as is known, is built of several spirally twined keratin fibers surrounded by plates. Tests have proven that the behavior of artificial hair according to the invention strongly resembles that of natural hair of the head.
  • Pigments are preferably provided in the coating that co- determine the color of the artificial hair.
  • Tests have proven that providing pigments in the coating of the artificial hair, and consequently close to the outer surface of the artificial hair, cause little or no false reflection, as a result of which the artificial hair will always look naturally.
  • Another advantage of providing pigments in the coating is that the pigments can be dispersed in the coating in a stable manner, whereby the risk of migration or flow of the pigments is strongly limited.

  • filaments 2 can preferably be provided in an artificial hair 1 according to the invention, which filaments 2 can be commonly twined or plaited or in which two or more filaments are mutually twined or plaited so as to form a fiber and whereby several such fibers are subsequently mutually twined or plaited.
  • the filaments 2 may have a circular cross section as well as a cross section in the shape of an oval, a double round shape or the like.

  • the coating 3 is preferably made on the basis of one of the following components: a chemical polyurethane compound, a viscose polyurethane compound, an acrylic compound, a vinyl compound, a Teflon compound, a viscose nylon compound, a viscose polyester compound.
  • a common coating 3 is meant that the coating 3 is provided round the filaments as if the different filaments 2 together form a single bundle that is coated.
  • pigments are provided in the coating 3 to color the artificial hair 1, it is clear that these pigments are situated at or in the immediate vicinity of the surface of the artificial hair 1, as a result of which false reflection effects are avoided.
  • figure 3 represents another variant of an artificial hair according to the invention, whereby different filaments 2 that are mutually twined or turned are provided with the above-described common coating 3.
  • filaments 2 can be commonly twined or plaited or in between which two or more filaments are mutually twined or plaited so as to form a fiber and whereby several of such fibers are subsequently mutually twined or plaited.
