Abstract

A safety device of elevator in which an elevating/lowering body being guided by a pair of guide rails is provided with a pair of brake mechanism bodies. Each brake mechanism body has a housing supported by the elevating/lowering body, a receiving rail batten provided in the housing, and a movable rail batten which can approach the guide rail and can recede therefrom. The movable rail batten can be displaced between a neutral position where it is spaced apart from the receiving rail batten by a predetermined distance, and brake positions located above and below the neutral position and where the movable rail batten is spaced apart from the receiving rail batten by a distance shorter than the predetermined distance. When the movable rail batten is displaced from the neutral position to the brake position depending on the moving direction of the elevating/lowering body while touching the guide rail, each guide rail is grasped individually between the receiving rail batten and the movable rail batten. Respective brake mechanism bodies are coupled by a coupling member. An electromagnetic driver for displacing the coupling member in the direction along which each movable rail batten approaches each guide rail and recedes therefrom is supported by the elevating/lowering body.
