Abstract

A large turbocharged diesel engine (1) provided with exhaust gas boilers (20, 23) and a power.turbine (31) for recovering energy in the exhaust gases. One of the boilers can be an integral part of the exhaust gases receivers (3). A part of the exhaust gas flow upstreams of the turbocharger turbine (6) is branched off to the power turbine. The engine comprises a preheating boiler (20) at the low-pressure side of the turbocharger turbine whilst a superheating boiler (23) is arranged at the high pressure side of the turbocharger turbine. The engine can be operated with highly humidified scavenging air to thereby increase the amount of energy in the exhaust gases 'that can be recovered. The engine can also be operated as a heat pump, i.e. the exhaust gas leaving the engine to have a temperature below ambient.
