Abstract

A furnace electrode seal (10) which includes a base (22), a lower jaw member (24) which is attached to the base and which has an inclined lower surface (36), an upper jaw member (26) which is movably engaged with the base and which has an inclined upper surface (44), a bias (28) which acts between the lower jaw member and the upper jaw member, a rigid insert (30) which is movably engaged with and at least partially trapped between the lower jaw member and the upper jaw member and at least a first compressible packing member (68) located between the lower jaw member, the upper jaw member and the insert.
