Definitions
- the present invention relates to light panels as well as, as an application of these panels, display screens, for example video, in particular television. It is well known that, currently, the use of light panels is found in all fields because it is more and more resorted to images as vectors of information for all public. This is essentially the case in the area of advertising, but also in that of industry, entertainment, the media, etc. In order to be able to reach the widest possible audience, but also to be able to be seen further and further, there is a tendency to use light panels and / or display screens of increasingly larger dimensions. It is however quite obvious that, for the information displayed by these panels to be perfectly visible, their brightness must be sufficient and as homogeneous as possible over their entire surface.
- the embodiments of these panels have essentially consisted in multiplying the light sources illuminating them by arranging them rearly relative to their viewing surface, at distances which are essentially proportional to the dimensions of the panels. Therefore, the size of this type of panels in a direction perpendicular to their viewing surface is sometimes very large, which contributes to limiting the use of these panels. In addition, the complexity of combining the number of light sources and elements for managing their operation considerably increases their cost price. The problem of small and medium-sized panels has been relatively well resolved, for example by the embodiment described and illustrated in International Application WO00 / 12930 in the name of the Applicant.
- a film for tending to distribute the light uniformly does not make it possible to obtain a fully satisfactory luminosity when the panels have large dimensions.
- the object of the present invention is therefore to produce a luminous panel having improved brightness, while having a relatively low cost price and the smallest possible overall depth.
- the subject of the present invention is a light panel, characterized in that it comprises: - at least one plate made of a material capable of transmitting at least partially the light emitted in the visible spectrum, said plate comprising two first and second opposite planar faces joined at their periphery by a wafer face, said first face constituting the display face of the panel, - a surface disposed opposite the second planar face at a non-zero distance so as to form, between it and this so-called second flat face, a blade of a transparent medium with an optical index lower than that of the material constituting said plate, and - light source means capable of emitting light beams at least in the visible spectrum, said light source means being substantially located at the periphery of said plate and said reflecting surface and arranged to direct a first part of the light beams towards said edge face and a second part of said light beams in said strip so that at least a portion of this second part of light beams is reflected on said reflective surface for be returned to said second flat face of said plate.
- said blade of a transparent medium with an optical index lower than that of the material constituting said plate is an air gap.
- the light source means capable of emitting light beams consist of at least two light source sub-assemblies, each of these sub-assemblies being respectively located opposite the edge face of the plate and facing the edge of the blade, so that the beams emitted by these two light source sub-assemblies respectively constitute the two said first and second parts of light beams.
- said reflecting surface is of the granular type to favor at least one of the following two optical phenomena: reflection and scattering.
- the light panel according to the invention further comprises a light distribution layer propagating in the plate.
- said light distribution layer is in contact with the second flat face of the plate.
- said plate consists of a plate made of at least one of the following materials: organic glass, PMMA.
- the present invention also aims to produce a display screen applying the light panel according to the invention, of the video type, characterized in that it comprises: - at least one plate made of a material capable of transmitting at least partially of the light emitted in the visible spectrum, said plate comprising two first and second opposite planar faces joined at their periphery by a wafer face, said first face constituting the display face of the panel, - a reflective surface arranged facing the second flat face at a non-zero distance so as to form, between it and said second flat face, a strip of a transparent medium with an optical index lower than that of the material constituting said plate, - light source means capable of emitting light beams at least in the visible spectrum, said light source means being substantially located at the periphery of the lad ite plate and said reflecting surface and arranged
- the single figure represents, in a partial view in cross section, a preferred embodiment.
- a display screen applying the light panel according to the invention It is firstly specified that the figure represents only one embodiment of the object according to the invention, but that there may be other embodiments which meet the definition of this invention. It is also specified that, when, according to the definition of the invention, the object of the invention comprises "at least one" element having a given function, the embodiment described may include several of these elements.
- the embodiment of the object according to the invention as illustrated comprises several elements of identical function and if, in the description, it is not specified that the object according to this invention must necessarily include a number particular of these elements, the subject of the invention could be defined as comprising "at least one" of these elements.
- the light panel comprises at least one plate 10 made of a material capable of transmitting at least partially the light emitted in the visible spectrum, this plate 10 comprising two first 11 and second 12 opposite planar faces joined at their periphery by a wafer face 13 , its first face 11 constituting the display face of the panel.
- a plate is known in itself and can for example consist of a plate made of organic glass, or of PMMA or the like, for example a material known by the trade names "Altuglas", "Plexiglas", etc. or the like.
- the panel according to the invention further comprises a reflective surface 14 produced on a rigid support 31 of any kind, also fixed on the frame 30.
- This reflective surface 14 is arranged opposite the second planar face 12 at a non-zero distance so as to form, between it and this said second flat face, a strip 15 of a transparent medium with an optical index lower than that of the material from which the plate 10 is made.
- this blade 15 of a transparent medium with an optical index lower than that of the material from which the plate 10 is made is an air gap. It is emphasized that, within the meaning of the definition of the invention and of the present description, the term “reflecting" qualifying the surface 14 must be understood as covering the phenomenon of optical reflection proper, but also the phenomenon of diffusion. This surface 14 can be smooth or grainy.
- the panel also includes light source means 16 capable of emitting light beams 17 at least in the visible spectrum.
- These light source means are substantially located at the periphery of the plate 10 and the reflecting surface 14 and are arranged to direct a first part 18 of the light beams 17 towards the edge face 13 and a second part 19 of these light beams in the blade 15 so that at least a portion of this second part 19 of light beams is reflected on the reflecting surface 14 and / or diffused by this surface 14 to be returned to the second flat face 12 of the plate 10.
- these light source means 16 capable of emitting daylight beams 17 at least in the visible spectrum are formed by lamps or the like, of a shape adapted to that of the periphery of the plate 10, so as to be able to be arranged along the edge face 13.
- these lamps are advantageous ment consist of tubes and can be arranged on at least one of the sides of the plate 10, preferably on two opposite sides, or on all four sides as explained below.
- these light source means 16 capable of emitting light beams 17 consist of two light source sub-assemblies 21, 22, each of these sub-assemblies being situated respectively opposite the edge face 13 of the plate 10, and opposite the edge 23 of the blade 15, so that the beams emitted by these two source sub-assemblies light respectively constitute the two parts of light beams 18, 19 defined above.
- Such light sources or lamps can be constituted, for example, by fluorescent type lighting tubes, LEDs, neon tubes or the like.
- the light source sub-assembly 21 located opposite the edge face 13 of the plate 10 will advantageously be composed of two light tubes placed on two opposite edges of the plate 10, or four tubes placed respectively on the four opposite edges, and the light source sub-assembly 22 located opposite the edge face 23 of the blade 15 will advantageously be composed of two light tubes placed on two opposite edges of the blade 15, or four tubes placed respectively on the four opposite edges .
- the subassemblies 21 and 22 may consist respectively of a number of different light tubes, in particular due to the presence of a light distribution layer as explained below.
- the light panel according to the invention can advantageously further comprise a layer 25 for distributing the light propagating in the plate 10 and diffused on the first face 11, for example, but not only, of the same type as that which is described and illustrated under the reference "20" on the drawings appended to the International Application mentioned in the preamble to the present description, namely a distribution layer comprising a plurality of strips of relatively small width in the vicinity of the light source and of an increasing width towards the center of the plate 10.
- the light source sub-assembly 21 placed opposite the edge 13 of the plate may advantageously consist of two day-light tubes placed opposite the two opposite edges of the plate corresponding to the start of the strips of the distribution layer 25 light.
- the distribution layer 25 which makes it possible to conduct the light such as a light waveguide can be produced in any known way, for example in a unitary fashion or not, by the superposition of several layers or by a single layer, with embodiments particular structural, for example by mixing an adhesive and white pigments adhering to the second face 12 of the plate 10, or by etching carried out on the second face of the plate 10, different light distributions such as dots, bands, etc.
- This light distribution layer 25 is located, as illustrated in the single figure, in contact with the second flat face 12 of the plate 10. It makes it possible to obtain a better distribution of the light propagating in the plate 10, in increasing the amount of light in the center of the plate to compensate for the light losses due to the absorption phenomenon which occurs when the light beams propagate in the plate and towards its center.
- the layer 25 will be made of a material capable of transmitting at least partially the light emitted in the visible spectrum.
- the light panel according to the invention operates in the following manner: The two light sources 21, 22 respectively emit their light beams 18, 19 towards the edge face 13 and the air gap 15 respectively.
- the light beams 18 striking the face edge 13 are propagated in the plate 10 and, by means of the diopter that constitutes the second face 12 of the plate 10 with the distribution layer 25, they diffuse in the plate to come to illuminate the entire first face 11, as explained in particular in the International Application cited above. Due to the large dimensions of the plate 10, there is a significant absorption of light energy in the material constituting this plate, which is not fully compensated for by the presence of the light distribution layer 25, and the brightness on the front display 11 is therefore never perfectly homogeneous. However, the light beams 19, which propagate in the air space 15 which, for its part, is very little absorbent, are almost entirely reflected and / or scattered on the reflecting surface.
- the entire second face 12 of the plate 10 relatively homogeneously.
- the two light densities those relating respectively to the beams 18 and to the beams 19, causes a synergistic effect defining a total light density whose relative variations are much smaller than those of the light density corresponding to the only light beams 18.
- the brightness of the front face 11 therefore has good homogeneity and good intensity over its entire surface, slight variations or decreases inherent in the first part of beams 18 being strongly attenuated or compensated.
- the above description applies to the structure of a static daylight display panel or the like, for example such as those used in the field of advertising or the like and which are of the type described in the Application. International referenced in the preamble to this description.
- the light panel according to the invention finds a particularly advantageous application for the production of a display screen, in particular a video screen, in particular a television screen, of the "flat" type and of large dimensions, for example to from 50 cm in length as needed.
- the display screen according to the invention which is schematically illustrated in the single figure, comprises a panel having the structure described above, and, opposite the first display side 11, an active matrix 40, also fixed on the frame 30.
- This active matrix 40 is of the type that is found in current video screens, comprising in known manner black and / or color pixels.
- Such active matrices are well known in themselves and are used in known display screens of the LCD screen type, and will therefore not be described more fully here.
- the active matrix 40 being associated with the light panel according to the invention described above, it is perfectly lighted, and especially homogeneously over its entire surface by the light emerging from the first face 11 of the plate 10, and therefore makes it possible to make video screens having a very good quality of brightness, even if they are very large, but with relatively small depths or thicknesses and reduced manufacturing costs.
