Abstract

A reaction vessel (A) for use in producing a high purity titanium sponge by the Kroll process, which has an inner surface of its body (10) being made of carbon steel at least at a liquid level or lower, and a heat shielding plate (30) made of carbon steel disposed between a cap (20) and a liquid level in the body (10) of the vessel, wherein at least the lower surface of the heat shielding plate is provided with a coating layer comprising a metal oxide such as TiO2 as a main component; a method for producing titanium sponge which comprises preparing a bulk of titanium sponge in the reaction vessel (A), taking out the bulk from the body (10) of the vessel, dividing the bulk into a plurality of small bulks, measuring the concentrations of Fe, Ni and Cr in all of the small bulks, and regarding a small bulk having been found to have impurity contents not more than the specified values, as a regular product.
