Abstract

The invention relates to a medical instrument, such as a retractor, brain spatula, muscle separator, vaginal speculum or similar. Said instrument comprises a working section (1; 12; 17-19; 25) that engages with the body of the patient (20) having an operation or being examined, for holding open an intervention site (21), said working section (1; 12; 17-19; 25) comprising an illumination device on its front face (4; 15; 29) for illuminating the intervention site (21). The aim of the invention, is to provide a medical instrument that guarantees a high degree of light intensity and a precise illumination of the intervention site, without using complex auxiliary devices and without causing the instrument to be heated to an unacceptable level in the vicinity of the intervention site. To achieve this, the inventive illumination device (4; 15; 29) is a light-emitting diode, which generates at least white light and which is connected to a power source (10) located outside the working section (1; 12; 17-19; 25) via an electrically conductive connection (9) located at least partially inside the working section (1; 12; 17-19; 25).
