Abstract
A turf system comprising a plurality of turfgrass units (4) having sidewalls for containing plant growing medium (6), in combination with means for providing forced air under and around the units. The growing medium comprises a turfgrass layer, an irrigation layer, and a rootzone layer between the turfgrass layer and the irrigation layer. The turfgrass units have fastening members that interconnect for releasably attaching each unit to at least one other unit. When assembled into a turf array, the system provides air duct channels forming a channel system (10). A pump is used to force air through the channel system and a heater may optionally be used to heat the air. The pump forces the heated air through the channel system and through the irrigation layer to the rootzone layer. Atomizing nozzles are used to inject water into the air provided to the channel system, in order to modify the humidity of that air. This provides necessary water to the rootzone layer of the turf units, and also results in evaporation cooling of the growing medium.
