Abstract

A body protection device for protection of at least a wearer's buttocks during snow boarding, roller blading or other recreational activities comprises a component (2) of a resilient, flexible shock absorbing material adapted to cover and protect at least a wearer's buttocks; and a strap or straps (3, 4) and fastening means (6) for securing the resilient component around the waist and legs of the wearer.

Description

IMPROVED BODY PROTECTION DEVICE
FIELD
The present invention comprises an improved body protection device.
BACKGROUND
Injuries due to sporting accidents which result from a person falling on their talk bone and buttocks are common and can include lower spine or hip damage as well as bruising and abrasion of the buttocks area. These injuries are particularly common in sports such as roller blading and snow boarding.
A previous attempt to overcome these difficulties was to provide additional padding within the structure of sports clothing. While providing some protection against injuries due to sporting accidents which result from a person falling on their tail bone and buttocks, this solution has had some disadvantages. As part of an item of apparel the form and hence effectiveness of the protective material is limited. As the protective unit is inexorably linked to the apparel the versatility of use of both items is restricted.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION The present invention provides an improved or at least alternative body protection device. The device reduces injury from impact and in the case of snow boarders provides warmth while seated in the snow.
In broad terms the invention comprises a body protection device for protection of at least a wearer's buttocks during snow boarding, roller blading or other recreational activities, the device comprising: a component of a resilient, flexible shock absorbing material adapted to cover and protect at least a wearer's buttocks; and a strap or straps and fastening means for securing the resilient component around the waist and legs of the wearer.
DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS
A preferred embodiment body protection device is described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, by way of example only and without intending to be limiting, in which:
Figure 1 is a rear view of the preferred embodiment device secured to a person; and
Figure 2 is a rear plan view of the preferred embodiment device; and
Figures 3 and 4 are side elevations of the preferred embodiment device.
DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED FORM
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, the preferred body protection device comprises a component of a resilient, flexible shock absorbing material 2 which includes strap anchor holes 5, a waist strap 3, two leg straps 4, and plug-in buckles 6 for each strap 3 and 4.
The resilient component 2 is shaped to cover (when secured) part or all of the buttocks area of a person 1. The pad may additionally be shaped to cover the hips, the upper thighs, and tailbone area. The resilient component may additionally be provided with extensions as shown in Figures 1 and 2. These extensions are shaped to extend downwardly to partially cover and protect the wearer's upper thighs when the device is fitted to the wearer.
As shown in Figures 3 and 4, the resilient component 2 may be of non-uniform cross- section, having additional padding over parts of the component 2.
The resilient component 2 includes a number of anchor holes 5 positioned at locations corresponding to a person's waist and upper leg areas. The waist strap 3 is attached to the resilient component 2 at the waist anchor hole 5. The waist strap 3 includes a buckle 6 which allows the strap 3 to be disengaged and encircle the waist of the wearer for fitting of the device to a person 1. Similarly the leg straps 4 are attached to the resilient component 2 at the leg anchor holes 5 and each include a buckle 6 allowing the straps 4 to be disengaged and encircle the upper leg area of the wearer for fitting the device to a person. The anchor hole 5 and buckle 6 to strap 3 or 4 attachment may be by any suitable means known in the art.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the device may include separate leg straps 4. Alternatively the device may include a single strap fastened to the device arranged to pass around the person's legs in close proximity to the person's groin area.
The buckles 6 may include tightening means (not shown) such as a standard adjustable teeth arrangement for example, although any known tightening means may be used.
The waist strap and/ or leg straps may be elasticised to allow freedom of movement of the person 1 when wearing the device. Preferably the resilient component 2 is a high impact resistant EVA moulded foam pad. Preferably the buckles 6 are of nylon.
While the straps have been shown with buckles, other arrangements such as velcro or elastic straps without a separate mechanism for example could also be used. As a further alternative, the resilient component 2 may be designed to wrap around a person and be secured by velcro or buttons for example, without the use of straps.
The resilient component 2 may be brightly coloured with screen printed graphics for promotional use.
In use the device is fitted to a person 1 by disengaging the buckles 6 of the waist 3 and leg 4 straps then maintaining the resilient component 2 over the buttocks area of the person 1 while re-engaging the buckles 6 such at the pad is secured to the person 1 at their waist and upper legs by the waist 3 and leg 4 straps respectively. When secured in this way, the device protects the person's tail bone and buttocks from impact and/ or grazing due to falling off roller blades for example.
The device can be used to advertise a roller blade hire company, for example, by the use of promotional graphics on the rear of the resilient component 2.
The foregoing describes the invention including a preferred form. Alterations and modifications as will be obvious to those skilled in the art are intended to be incorporated within the scope hereof.
