Definitions
- the invention relates to a building material mixture which is especially, but not exclusively, suitable as a screed for constructing flooring.
- the invention aims to provide an improved such building material mixture which makes predominant use of recycled and waste materials so as to place less reliance on natural resources such as sand and gravel.
- a further aim is to provide a building material mixture which enables the production of constructions that are light in weight and yet are solid and that exhibit good heat insulating
- a building material mixture comprising a binding agent and an aggregate is characterised in that the aggregate
- a building material mixture according to the invention can, with suitable additions or modifications, be used as a basis not only for continuous flooring but also vented boards ready for a plaster finish, ceiling panels affording thermal insulation, building
- additives may be employed in a variety of combinations and it is of particular advantage that the
- the material can be prepared as a mixture from waste.
- the constituents should, however, be brought to an optimum particle size.
- the material fs easily worked and creates little dust and the products made from It wear well and exhibit markedly fewer blisters and
- the binder which may amount to from 25% to 50%, the mixture can be easily worked and applied by hand but It can, of course, also be compacted mechanically If so desired.
- the mixture of the invention is prepared in a cold condition, that is to say without the application of heat, which conserves energy.
- the only machinery that might be required in the manufacturing process are comminuters, sifters or sieves and mixing (stirring) apparatus.
- the best form of wood that is used in the mixture is shavings which are treated (coated or impregnated) with a suitable preservative against dry or wet rot and woodworm.
- Spray coating with tall oil as hereinafter described will also contribute to preserving the wood
- the wood particles which may be shavings or chips but not sawdust and which may include or be replaced by tree bark particles, amount to 45% by volume.
- the heat insulating material in this example amounts to 25% by volume and comprises polystyrene beads of 4 to 6mm particle size or cork cuttings of 4 to 6mm particle size or shredded waste paper 6 to 12mm in size.
- the preferred binding agent is 40% by volume of Portland cement and the crushed building rubble amounts to 5% by volume. A/though the percentage volume total will be seen to come to 115%, in reality of course the total is 100%.
- the building rubble can in this case be broken tiles, flagstones and/or bricks preferably of up to 6mm in particle size. Shredded plastics waste of up to 10mm particle size may be mixed with the building rubble.
- the binding agent is limestone or lime or plaster.
- the heat insulating material may instead of or in addition to the aforementioned polystyrene, cork or shredded paper comprise
- the material of the invention does not have to be worked under pressure in a press like known materials and has a by far smaller tendency to create dust, thereby facilitating binding of the mixture.
- part of the building material mixture is supplied separately to the customer, who then adds the remainder.
- the wood (and/or cork) and the heat insulating material are supplied in hermetically sealed containers, for example 65 I plastics sacks.
- the rubble and cement are admixed not long before use. The reason is that, no matter how carefully the wood and polystyrene are prepared, they may contain moisture to a greater or smaller degree and this would cause the cement to set in the sack before the mixture is intended to be used.
- the mixture may include 10 to 20% by volume of shredded rubber or caoutchouc of 1 to 7mm particle size, for example from old tyres which are usually fn plentiful supply.
- building rubble other than broken flagstones or tiles may be
- the wood particles are spray coated with processed tall oil and/or its derivatives and fractions in an amount of up to 5% by weight, preferably 0.5 to 1.5%, of the binding agent.
- Tall oil and its derivatives and fractions in an amount of up to 5% by weight, preferably 0.5 to 1.5%, of the binding agent.
- derivatives and fractions is a byproduct and waste product which occurs predominantly in the manufacture of paints and lacquers and is particularly suitable as a recycling product for the mixture according to the present invention.
- the tall oil tends to separate from the wood and give the mixture fire resistance.
- additive can be used In the form of flue ash in an amount of up to 30% by weight.
- the flue ash is obtained from the thermal utilisation of mineral coal, brown coal, coke and similar substances, for example asphalt, tar or roofing paper or like chemically related starting materials.
- This additive gives the mixture particularly good properties and Is a recycled material obtained from natural raw materials.
- Another natural waste material for the mixture can be hemp and flax. These materials give the mixture an excellent binding property. They are easily worked and can be used in a size of 0.5 to 5cm and in an amount of 2 to 10% by volume.
