Definitions
- the invention relates to a dropper tip for the formation of small droplets, in particular for use in containers for dispensing eye-drops, comprising a member with a tapering end for the formation of drops from a liquid discharged on the outer side of the element, and a liquid supply duct which ends at the outer side of the tapering member.
- Norwegian Patent No. 14889 discloses a dropper tip of the above type.
- This known dropper tip comprises in one embodiment a tapering pin of for instance triangular cross-section and with a rounded head. The pin is inserted in a block with a through hole, the diameter of which is slightly larger than the largest diameter of the pin.
- the block is in turn inserted into the side of-a plug positioned in the neck of a bottle containing the liquid to be dispensed in form of small droplets.
- the liquid flows through a bore in the plug to the block, from where it slowly runs onto the conical part of the pin through the narrow duct formed between the pin and the hole in the block.
- the liquid seeks downwards towards the point of the pin, from where it drops down in form of droplets, when the size or the weight of the droplet formed is sufficient to overcome the adhesion to the point of the pin.
- the dimensions of the point of the pin determine the size of the droplets, and it is stated that by using pins, the outmost point of which has been cut farther away from or closer to the base of the pin, either a smaller or larger adhesion surface for the liquid is attained and consequently finer or larger drops, respectively.
- a glass pin with a rounded head has been inserted into a hole in the bottom of a pipette.
- it may preferably be made slightly uneven or grooved, ducts being thus created between the pin and the edge of the hole.
- the known dropper tip is, moreover, unsuitable for mass-production by casting in plastics, as it is difficult when casting to produce fine pins or uneven or grooved pin heads, which result in reproducible duct cross-sections, when these pins are placed in fine holes made during the casting. It is in practice also difficult during the casting to produce fine holes of a reproducible size, as, for this purpose, fine, and consequently fragile cores have to be used.
- EP Patent Application No. 93493 discloses a device for dispensing a liquid in form of drops from a compressible bottle. This device is between a cap on the neck of the bottle and the outlet nozzle of the dropper tip provided with an elongate tube which is filled with long, thin fibres, the interspaces between the fibres forming a huge number of ducts, each having a very small cross-section, which prevents the liquid from the bottle from flowing out too quickly. This construction is likewise unsuitable for casting in plastics.
- the object of the invention is to provide a dropper tip of the above type, which is suited for mass- production in plastics and which allows an exact and reproducible design of the liquid supply duct.
- the object is met by a dropper tip of the type mentioned by way of introduction, which dropper tip is characteristic in that the member consists of two surfaces abutting each other, and in that the liquid supply duct comprises a fine groove positioned in a first surface which in a direction perpendicular to the surface is sealed tightly by the second surface. It is hereby made possible to form the duct in a surface by means of well-known methods which allow an easy attainment of the necessary precision of the cross-section of the duct.
- the fine groove in the first surface may be embedded, or be made by scratching, engraving, milling or embossing. At the casting and by embossing very fine grooves or indentations may be produced in the surface, but in particular scratching, engraving and milling make it posible to produce grooves as fine as a hair with a well-defined cross-section.
- the surfaces abutting each other may in a second embodiment be plane.
- a further embodiment is characeristic in that the tapering end of the member is shaped as a cone, and in that the surfaces abutting each other hold the axis of the cone.
- the element may at the end opposite the tapering end be shaped as a circular-cylindrical plug.
- the dropper tip is conical as described immediately above and for instance composed by two symmetrical parts, the two parts may be held firmly pressed against each other during the insertion in the neck of the bottle.
- the dropper tip may comprise a mantle surrounding the outer side of the member such that the tapering portion of the dropper tip is hidden.
- part of the mantle may be a cylindrical sleeve, in which the member is resiliently retained, such that the surfaces of the member abutting each other are pressed tightly together.
- the neck of the bottle in which the dropper tip is inserted in a bottle with neck, the neck of the bottle may protrude over the dropper tip and form a mantle surrounding the outer side of the element.
- the fine groove may be sinuous.
- very long grooves may be provided in the surface, said grooves giving a correspondingly large resistance towards throughflowing.
- Fig. 1 is a longitudinal view of a dropper tip according to the invention consisting of a cone point and a ring,
- Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cone point according to Fig. 1,
- Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the ring according to Fig. 1,
- Fig. 4 is a plane view of the ring according to Fig. 3, seen in the direction IV-IV in Fig. 3
- Fig. 5 is a lateral view of a dropper tip according to another embodiment
- Fig. 6 is a cross-section of an engraved groove
- Fig. 7 is a cross-section of a cast groove
- Fig. 8 is a cross-section of another cast groove
- Fig. 9 is a sectional view of a dropper tip with a sinuous groove.
- the dropper tip 1 shown in Figs. 1 - 4 comprises a ring 7 and a cone point 2 with a neck 3, in which longitudinal grooves 4 are provided, said grooves ending at the plane base 6 of the cone point.
- the periphery of the ring has a conical portion 9 abutting the surface 11 and a cylindrical portion 10 abutting the opposite end surface.
- the ring has a central bore 8 which at its mouth in the surface 11 is provided with a bevel 5.
- the conical portion 9 has the same conicity as the cone point 2.
- the dropper tip may be pressed into the neck of a dispensing bottle, where it acts as a plug through the cylindrical portion 7 fitting tigthly into the bottle neck.
- the bottle is turned upside down, such that the liquid in the bottle covers the end surface of the dropper tip simultaneously with a squeezing of the sides of the bottle towards each other.
- the liquid flows down through the ducts 4 to an annular compartment formed between the bevel 5 and the neck 3. From there, the liquid is pressed in a weak flow through the fine grooves 12 in the surface 11 to the outer side of the dropper tip and further on to the point of the cone, from where it drips down.
- the dropper tip shown in Fig. 1 consists of two substantially symmetrical half portions 15 and 25 cast integrally in plastics.
- the half portions are connected by flat, flexible hinge means 28 and are connected by their plane surfaces 20 and 26 being swung towards each other around the hinge means 28, the locking pins 27 on the surface 26 engaging corresponding holes 22 in the surface 20.
- the fine grooves 21 are closed in a direction perpendicular to the surface 20 by the surface 26.
- a dropper tip with a conical member 16 surrounded by a mantle 17 is provided.
- the mantle is on top provided with a recess 18 fitting into the neck of a dispensing bottle.
- the dropper tip has a central cavity 19, from which the grooves 21 extend to the outer side of the member 16.
- the grooves 21 extend to the outer side of the member 16.
- Fig. 6 shows at a larger scale a cross-section of the groove 12 in the surface 11 shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
- the groove 12 has been scratched into the surface 11 by an instrument which has given it a triangular cross- section.
- the groove 21 shown in Fig. 7 in the surface 20 is an example of a groove produced during the casting of the dropper tip.
- the groove 30 in Fig. 8 is likewise produced during the casting.
- the groove forms a flat depression which is only a few hundredth mm below the plane of the surface 31.
- the curved grooves 32 shown in Fig. 9 are arranged in such a way that they, as far as possible, fill out the area at disposal of the surface 33.
