Abstract
A standard lamp (1) has a bracket (9) on which detachable flexible arms (17) can be fitted; one (14) with a magnifying glass (16) and another (15) with a spring clamp (20). The lamp will be used to enable tasks to be performed which require both illumination and mangification, with the spring clamp (20) acting as a holder for instructions and diagrams, etc. The detachability of these arms reduces the area taken up by the lamp and returns to the lamp the appearance of a regular standard lamp. The lamp shaft (4) is attached at the bottom to a weighted base (2). The lamp can be adjusted up and down and can be locked off. A flexible stem (7) with a light fitting (8) attached is mounted on top of the telescopic shaft (4), thus affording a great variety of positions in which the lamp head can be placed. The detachable flexible arms also afford a great variety of positions for the magnifier and clamp.
Description
STANDARD LAMP
This invention relates to a standard lamp with means for mounting one or more detachable accessories such as flexible stems on which are attached a magnifying lens and a clamp for holding embroidery frames, charts and diagrams, etc.
Standard lamps are commonly used for illumination in the workplace and the home. Where people are performing intricate tasks, they often require magnification as well.
There are a number of combined illumination and magnification lamps available, some having a lens and light source housed together; some with the lens and light source mounted separately on ste s. It is a feature of the invention that the accessories such as flexible stems with a magnifier or a clamp are easily removable, thus rendering the lamp less 'awkward' looking when not in use, and more aesthetically pleasing m the manner of a traditional standard lamp. According to the present invention there is provided a standard lamp comprising a base, a shaft extending upwardly from the base and carrying a light fitting, and mounting means cr the shaft for detachably mounting one or more accessories for the lamp. in a preferred embodiment, the light fitting can
be adjusted up and down on a lockable telescopic shaft. The light fitting is attached to a flexible stem fixed to the top of the upper portion of the shaft. Mounted on to the lower portion of the shaft is a bracket into which 5 plugs on the flexible stems can be inserted and removed. A magnifying lens is attached to one of the stems and a clamp for holding instructions and diagrams, etc is mounted on another. The whole unit is mounted on a weighted floor base which can be moved on casters. 10 A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, m which: -
Figure 1 snows a standard lamp in accordance with the invention; and
_ z> Figure 2 snows the detachabil ty of the accessories from the bracket mounted on the shaft.
The stanαarά lamp 1 shown in Figure 1 comprises a weighted base 2 wnicn is mounted on castors 3. A telescopic snaft - extends upwardly from the base and comprises an outer lower portion 5 and an inner upper portion G. Λ lexiole stem 7 is mounted on the upper end cf the upper portion 6 and carries a light fitting 8.
A bracket C- is mounted at the upper end of the lower portion or the snaft ana has a central passage through wnich the upper portion 6 o f the shaft passes. A locking screw 11 is provided for clamping the upper
portion of the shaft in the bracket. Two sockets 12 are formed in radial protrusions 13 of annular configuration on the bracket and have substantially vertical axes. The extent of radial projection of the protrusions from the shaft is substantially equal to the diameter of the shaft.
Two accessories 14,15 for detachable mounting on the standard lamp are provided. The first accessory comprises a magnifying lens 16 mounted on one end of a flexible stem 17. The other end of the stem 17 is provided with a plug 18 adapted to be rotatably received in one of the sockets 12 so that the accessory can be supported on the standard lamp. A collar 19 limits the passage of the plug through the socket.
The second accessory 15 is the same as the first except that the magnifying lens is replaced by a spring clamp 20 on the end of its flexible ste 17. Wiring 21 for the light fitting is fed through a hole in the upper portion of the shaft.
In use, the clamp can be used to hold a workpiece or a chart, pattern, diagram, instructions or the like. The magnifying lens is used for looking at a workpiece, such as an embroidery frame for example, which is illuminated by the light fitting. Because the light fitting, lens and clamps are all mounted on flexible stems and because the shaft 4 is telescopic and the plugs 18 are rotatably receive in the sockets 12, the standard lamp is
extremely adaptable to different working configurations. When the accessories are removed, the lamp resembles an ordinary standard lamp with the sockets providing a relatively small decorative embellishment.
