Description

March 1 1927' s. OFFENBACH SHELF .Filed Auna) 1492s Patented Mar. 1, 19.275.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SHELF.
Application led August 2, 1923. Serial No. 655,314.
This invention relates to an improved electric lamp and seeks, among other objects, to provide a device of this character embodying a stand including an ash tray supported by the stand for convenient .use
The invention seeks, as a further object, to provide a device of this character whereinthe lamp stand will also embody .a conveniently located book shelf. v
And the invention seeks, as a still further object, to provide a device wherein the 'lamp stand will further include a spring clamp for holding papers or the like.
Other and incidental objects will appear hereinafter.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation4 of my im-Y proved lamp,
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 2--2 of Figure 1, looking in the i direction of the arrows,
Fi re '3 is a detail elevation particularly showmg the book shelf,
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view on .the line 4-4 of Figure 1, and
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view taken through the ash tray of the device.
In carrying the invention into effect, I employ a weighted base 10 and xed to the base is an upstanding tubular post 11 preferably square in cross section. Fitting over the u per end of the post is a collar 12 suitabl ed to thepost and adjustable through sai collar is a set screw 13. Slidably tting through the collar is a cylindrical rod 14 extending freely into the post so that said rod may be adjusted vertical y upon the post and secured in adjusted posltion by means of the set screw 13.a Secured to the upper endof the rodis a iiexible metallicftube 15 which may be formed from a helically wound strlp of suitable sheet metal and connected to the free end of msaid tube is a lamp socket 16 embodying an appropriate switch 17 and carrying a reiector 18 disposed to extend over a light/bulb iitted in said socket. Extending upwardly through the post 11, rod 14, and tube 15, are circuit wires 18 connected to the socket 16, the circuit for the lamp being controlled, of course, by the switch 17. As will be appreciated, the tube 15 may be flexed for disposing the light bulb and reector in the exact position desired and provides a means for adjusting the light auxiliary to the vertical adjustment of the rod 14, y
V"Brazed or otherwise secured to one side of the post 11 near its upper end is a metal strap forming a loop 19 and detachab-ly supported by said loop is an ash tray 20. This ash tray is provided with a lateral rim .21 and mounted on the rim are cigar holders 22 as well as an appropriate match box hol-der 23. Mounted upon the side wall of the tra-y at a point midway between the ends thereof is an inverted U-shaped hook 25 bent to fit in the angle beneath the rim 21. One end of the hook as well as the transverse portion thereof is brazed or otherwise secured to L,said side wall and tosaid rim while the opposite end of the hook projects downwardly for engagementihrough the loop y19. The Afree end o-f the hook fits snugly through said loop so that the hook will serve to support the tray while, `at the same time, the tray may be readily'removed and thus may be conveniently kept clean.
Brazed or otherwise secured to the side of the post below the loop 19 is a similar loop 26 and supported by said loop is a shelf 27. At its inner longitudinal edge the shelf is provided with a medial depending. hook 28 removably engaging through said loop connecting the shelf with the post 11 and extending from the shelf at its louter Y corners are downwardly converging braces 29. At their lower ends, these braces are appropriately secured to a spring clamp'30 embracing the post 11 and gripping said post for connecting the `braces with the post. Thus, the braces will relieve the hook 28 of the major portion of any weight'placed upon the shelf and, as will be seen, the shelf prl'ovides a convenient rest for a book or the li e. f
Brazed o-r otherwise: secured'to the lower end portion of the post at the side thereof opposite the loops 19 and 26, is a similar loop 31 and removably engaged at its lower end in said loop is an upstanding spring clamp 32 extending upwardly at the adjacent side of the post. j The clamp 32 is preferably bowed longitudinally to engage near its free end with the post so that papers or the like may be inserted between the clamp and post to be held by said spring. It will tention is dlrected to the fact that the posi,-
`accordingly be seen that I provide a lamp tion of the ash tray 20, book shelf 27 and spring clamp 32 may be interclianged as de sired to thus further enhance the conven ience of the device.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
As a new article of manufacture, a shelf, a tongue integral with the shelf and depending therefrom intermediate the length of its rear edge and adapted to {it into an eye projecting from a front face of a support, arms formed integral with said shelf and depending from the front of the shelf adjacent its ends, said arms converging downwardly and rearwardly and having their lower end portions bent to extend in parallel s aced relation to each other and substantially parallel to the lane of said tongue, and a spring clamp iaving a bridge portion secured against the inner faces of the parallel lower end portions of said arms and having arms extending rearwardly from its bridge portion to irmly grip the support from opposed side faces thereof with the said bridge portion engaging the front face of the support.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
