Abstract

A tyre comprising a rubber and material body which may have previously been used, and a polyurethane tread bonded thereto. The body and tread are bonded together by locating a strip of natural rubber therebetween and applying heat and pressure to vulcanise the strip of rubber to form a bond.

Description

TYRES WITH PLASTIC~TREAD AND METHOD FOR THEIR MANUFACTURING
This invention concerns improvements in or relating to tyres, and to a method of making tyres.
% According to the present invention there is provided a tyre comprising a rubber and material body, and a plastics material tread bonded to the body.
The tread is preferably formed substantially from polyurethane . Rubber may be included in the tread and the rubber may be provided in the form of rubber crumb.
Rubber crumb is obtained during retreading of tyres and other processes involving rubber products.
The tyre body may have been obtained from a previously used tyre, and the plastics material tread added during retreading. Alternatively, the body and tread may have been bonded together during manufacture of a new tyre.
The body and tread are preferably bonded together by a strip of rubber which is vulcanised between the body and tread thereby forming a bond therebetween. The ^ strip is preferably formed of natural rubber and is desirably between 1 and 1.5mm thick.
The present invention also provides a method of making a tyre, the method comprising bonding a rubber and material body to a plastics material tread by locating a strip of unvulcanised rubber therebetween and applying heat and pressure to vulcanise the strip thereby providing a bond between the body and tread.
The tread is preferably formed substantially of polyurethane, and the strip is preferably natural rubber.
The tread is preferably formed in a mould from liquid polyurethane. Rubber crumb is preferably added to the polyurethane prior to moulding. The body may be obtained from a previously used tyre and the plastics material tread applied during retreading.
The body is preferably prepared prior to bonding by sanding and/or buffing. A bonding agent is preferably applied to the tread and/or body and allowed to dry prior to locating the rubber strip between body and tread.
There is thus described a tyre and a method of making same which provides a tyre with the advantages of a rubber body and also the advantages of hard wearing polyurethane as a tread. The polyurethane tread provides increased resistance to oil, chemicals, ageing; and cutting, tearing or penetration by stones or other objects, relative to a conventional rubber tread. Traction and/or skid properties can be enhanced in the tread by a siping process subsequent to manufacture of the tread. As noted above rubber crumb may be added to the polyurethane to enhance the grip and/or skid properties of the tread, and other materials may be added as is appropriate. The above tyre permits conventional tyre manufacturing machinery and techniques to be used thereby not incurring extra costs. The rubber strip may be vulcanised in an autoclave as is conventional.
It is to be realised that the above features are described by way of example only and different materials and/or manufacturing steps could be used without departing from the scope of the invention.
Whilst endeavouring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the Applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to and/or shown in the drawings whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.

Claims

Claims :
1. A tyre comprising a rubber and material body, characterised in that a plastics material tread is bonded to the body.
2. A tyre according to claim 1, characterised in that the tread is formed substantially from polyurethane.
3. A tyre according to claims 1 or 2, characterised in that rubber is included in the tread.
4. A tyre according to claim 3, characterised in that the rubber is provided in the form of rubber crumb.
5. A tyre according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that the tyre body has been obtained from a previously used tyre, and the plastics material tread added during retreading.
6. A tyre according to any of claims 1 to 4, characterised in that the body and tread have been bonded together during manufacture of a new tyre.
7. A tyre according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that the body and tread are bonded together by a strip of rubber which is vulcanised between the body and tread thereby forming a bond therebetween.
8. A tyre according to claim 7, characterised in that the rubber strip is formed of natural rubber.
9. A tyre according to claims 7 or 8, characterised in that the rubber strip is between 1 and 1.5mm thick.
10. A method of making a tyre, the method comprising bonding a rubber and material body to a plastics material tread by locating a strip of unvulcanised rubber therebetween and applying heat and pressure to vulcanise the strip thereby providing a bond between the body and tread.
11. A method according to claim 10, characterised in that the tread is formed substantially of polyurethane.
12. A method according to claim 11, characterised in that the tread is formed in a mould from liquid polyurethane.
13. A method according according to claim 12, characterised in that rubber crumb is added to the polyurethane prior to moulding.
14. A method according to any of claims 10 to 13, characterised in that the strip is formed substantially of natural rubber.
15. A method according to any of claims 10 to 14, characterised in that the body is obtained from a previously used tyre and the plastics material tread is applied during retreading.
16. A method according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that the body is prepared prior to bonding by sanding and/or buffing.
17. A method according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that bonding agent is applied to the tread and/or body and allowed to dry prior to locating the rubber strip between the body and tread.
