Abstract

L'invention décrit un procédé simplifié de fabrication de silicates stratifiés de magnésium aptes au gonflement, contenant des fluorures, du type smectite, notamment de composés correspondants de structure hectorite, procédé dans lequel il est prévu un stade réactionnel hydrothermique des produits en réaction formant les silicates stratifiés, à pression et à température élevées. Le nouveau procédé est caractérisé en ce qu'on soumet à la réaction hydrothermique, un co-précipitat de mangésium et de silicium sous forme d'hydroxyde, autaut que possible pratiquement exempt de sels étrangers, en suspension aqueuse alcaline et en présence de MgSiF6 dissous et/ou de sels fournissant d'autres ions fluorure, et en ce qu'on sépare, comme désiré, le produit solide formé, après refroidissement, de la phase aqueuse et des sels étrangers éventuellement dissous dans celle-ci. Le produit humide ainsi obtenu ne possède encore aucune capacité de gonflement importante dans l'eau. L'invention prévoit, au stade final du procédé, un séchage de ce produit humide à température moyennement élevée. Il se forme alors, au stade final, le silicate stratifié cristallisé à capacité de gonflement élevée. L'invention a également pour objet l'utilisation du silicate stratifié ainsi fabriqué, en relation avec l'épaississement de phases liquides aqueuses. Au moyen d'un apprêtage oléophile connu du silicate stratifié fabriqué conformément à l'invention, ces épaississants modifiés conviennent pour l'emploi dans des phases organiques.
