Pour cela, dans la conception de terre pleins, terrains de sports et tous autres travaux de génie civil, on procède généralement à l'épandage d'une couche de terre ou autre matériau appelé tout venant qui est un mélange de sable, de terre, de cailloux de petites tailles. L'ensemble mélangé est étalé en général avec une machine appelée bouteur ou "bulldozer", qui est un tracteur à chenilles ou à roues caoutchoutées muni d'une lame à l'avant pour pousser les matériaux. Ensuite une machine légère sur roues caoutchoutées avec lame niveleuse disposée au centre entre les roues avant et les roues arrières permet de dresser et de régler couche par couche les matériaux pour avoir une planimétrie parfaite.
