Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method for cleaning contaminated grounds comprising: providing the contaminated ground, on or ajacent the surface, with a distribution pipe system and providing, ajacent the distribution pipe system, one or more well-bore or bores having a depth so as to extend down to or below the contaminated stratum or strata of earth, pumping water up from the well-bore or bores and purifying the water, whereinafter the purified water or a part thereof is fed to the distribution pipe system for recirculation.
- the present invention builds upon the realization that if a purification by means of reverse osmosis is conbined with a biological purification, it is possible to achieve a technically advantageous result. Accordingly, the method according to the present invention is char ⁇ acterized by purifying the pumped water by reverse osmosis and subjecting the concentrate from the reverse osmosis purification to biological purification.
- an effective and cheap purification of the water in question is achieved because the reverse osmosis results in an increased concentration of the contaminations in the concentrate and according to experience upon which the present invention is built, it has been proven that even if the content of contaminations in this concentrate is very high, it is nevertheless possible to break down the concentrate biologically.
- the biological purification may be made by means of the active sludge method but it is also possible to carry out the biological purification by means of the method using the fluidized bed method.
- biological purification according to the active sludge method has proved to be advantageous.
- the present invention builds upon the realization that even if the concentrate from the reverse osmosis purification has a high content of contamination substances, a propagation or an adaptation or production of the micro-organism cultures, capable of breaking down the substances in question biologically, nevertheless will occur.
- This realization may furthermore be utilized according to the present invention, viz. by seeding the water fed to the distribution pipe system with micro ⁇ organisms from the micro-organism culture resulting from the biological purification.
- micro-organisms are fed to the stratum or strata to be cleaned, and such micro-organisms are, in particular, suitable for the breaking down of the impurities in the stratum or strata concerned, and already during the seeping of the water into the contaminated stratum or strata an initial biological breaking down of the contaminating substances will occur.
- the present invention also relates to an appropriate plant for carrying out the method in question comprising: a distribution pipe system for positioning on or ajacent the surface of the ground to be cleaned, means for pumping water up from one or more well-bore/bores provided ajacent the distribution pipe system and means for purifying the pumped water before conducting it to the distribution pipe system.
- the plant is characterized by: the means for purifying the water being constituted by a plant for reverse osmosis which is connectable with the well-bore or bores, the plant for reverse osmosis being connectable with a container for biological purification in the form of a tank arrangable upon the earth for feeding the concentrate resulting from the reverse osmosis purification to the tank, the plant for reverse osmosis furthermore being connectable with the distribution pipe system for conducting the water purified by reverse osmosis to the distribution pipe system.
- the sludge outlet from the tank may be connected with the distribu ⁇ tion pipe system for transferring a part of the sludge to the distribution pipe system.
- a buffer container for the concentrate may be insertable between the plant for reverse osmosis and the tank for biological purification.
- fig. 1 very schematically shows a section through a ground to be cleaned
- fig. 2 shows a flow-sheet illustrating an embodiment of the method according to the present invention and an embodiment of a plant for carrying out the method.
- 1 designates a contaminated ground.
- ground may e.g. be a ground where a gas works or another kind of contaminating industry previously has been positioned or the ground may constitute an area which has been used for depositing chemicals.
- 2 designates a well-bore which extends down below the contaminated stratum or strata and is provided with pump means (not shown) for pumping water up from the liner of the well to a purification plant 3. The pumped water is purified in the plant 3 and the purified water is conducted to the ground 1 as indicated by means of arrows.
- fig. 1 serves for illustrating the principle known per se used for "in situ" cleaning of contaminated grounds.
- 1 designates the ground in question to be cleaned.
- 4 designates a distribution pipe system to be arranged on or ajacent the surface of the ground 1 to be cleaned.
- the pipe system in question may e.g. consist of porous or perforated pipes e.g. in the form of drain pipes which, however, in the present instance do not serve for draining but, on the contrary, for feeding water to the earth to be cleaned.
- 5,6 and 7 designate three well-bores corresponding to the well-bore 2, fig. 1.
- the three well-bores are provided with pump means (not shown) for pumping up water of which at least a part originates from the water previously seeped into the ground from the distribution pipe system 4.
- 8 designates an equalization container which receives water from the three well-bores 5,6 and 7 which, similar to the bore 2 in fig. 1, extend down below the contaminated stratum or strata of earth.
- the equalization container 8 is connected with a plant 9 for reverse osmosis wherein the water, pumped up from the wells, is subjected to an up-concentration in a way known per se. Via a concentrate container 10 which also serves as a buffer container, the plant " 9 is connected with a plant for biological purification 11.
- the plant for biological purification may e.g. be of the kind which works with fluidized bed i.e. the concentrate arriving from the container 10 is pumped into the bottom of the container in question whereby e.g. sand, which constitutes the fluidized bed, is whirled up and micro-organism cultures are formed on the sand which is capable of producing a biological breaking down of the impurities in the concentrate, in such a way that purified water and sludge result.
- the plant for biological purification may also be adapted for biological purification by the active sludge method and if this is the case, the plant may, in a way known per se, be divided into an active part and a clarification part from which sludge is returned to the active part.
- the purified water is conducted from the plant 11 to an aerated filtrate container 12 through a pipe conduit 13, and from the container 12 the aerated water is via a conduit 15 fed to the distribution pipe system 4 in case it is wanted to use this water for the washing of the ground.
- the plant for reverse osmosis 9 is by means of a pipe conduit 14 connected with the container 12 for aerating the water purified in the plant 9 and the purified water is, after having passed the container 12, conducted to the distri ⁇ bution pipe system via the pipe conduit 15.
- Surplus water, if any, from the plant for reverse osmosis 9 and from the aerated filtrate container 12 may via pipe conduits 17 and 18 be fed to a sewerage 20.
- the sludge may by means of a valve 23 be conducted to the return conduit 15 via the aeration container 12 in order to be broken up by means of the agitator in the container 12.
- the plant shown operates in the following way:
- the flow of concentrate to the biological purification plant 11 may be controlled during the operation of the plant, in order to optimize the conditions for the micro-organisms in the plant 11.
- control may also be achieved by adjusting the plant 9 for reverse osmosis, in a way known per se, in such a way that the concentration of impurities in the concentrate corresponds to the optimum conditions in the biological purification plant 11.
- the concentrate contai ⁇ ner 10 may when starting the plant be used for accomodating the major part of the concentrate whereas only a small part is fed to the biological purification plant 11 in order to achieve propagation or adaptation or formation of the micro-organism cultures aimed at.
- the plant 11 may be constituted by a comparatively small tank which may be arranged upon the surface of the earth whereby the tank in question, when a ground has been cleaned, may be used for cleaning another ground. Furthermore, it will be understood that the plant for reverse osmosis also may be arranged upon the surface of the earth and the same applies as regards the other container components of the plant.
