" @The rigihalt wenn lmini igrseleitir's nttnt nim milking patri uf ila same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CQNCERN:V l l 12e it known that '1, THOMAS C. RIcHARDS, of theeity, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and usel'ul Improvement in Attaching. Ornamental Heads` to Nails, Screws, 8m.; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable vothers skilled in'the art to make and use the same, reference being hadv to thje'aceompanying drawings, formingpart of thisspecication.
-will admit of the, ornamental head being adjust-ed expeditiously on the nail or screw.
This invention relates rto a newand'improved mode of attaching ornamental heads to nails, screws, tc., whereby said nails may, with the greatestf'acility, be applied to the screw or Anail after the same has been driven or screwed in a wall oir other fixture. l
The object of' the invention isto obtain an economical means for effecting the object7 aswell as o'ne which In, the accompanying sheet ci' drawings- Figures/1 and\2 represent innerside views of ornamental heads for nails andscrews. Figures 3 and 4 represent sectional views of the same, taken in the line :1; x, fig. 1. Similar letters of reference indica-tc corresponding parts. v A, fig-afl and 3, represents 'an ornamental head for' a nail or screw, in this instance shown applied to a screw, B. This head is composed of a socket, a,struelr up ont of a. single pieccjofsheet metaLrand having the ornamental part, b, which may be of glass, perce-lain, or other material, fitted in it, and bearing against a wooden or other filling, c, (see iig. 3.) The inner side of this'head, which is the bottom or rear side of the socket a,'is
slitted to admit of three lips, e, e, and d, beingturned outward, to form a recess or groove to-receive the head e of thescrew B, the lip serving as a step at one end of" the recess or groove.
l It will bc seen that after the screw B isvscrewed into the wall or other fixture, the ornamental head A may be tted'on'the head e of the screw/with the greatest facility.'
This recess or groove may, if desired, be formed out of a separate piece of metal, as shown vin figs. 2 and 4, the sides of` the metal being turned over, as shown atff, and one end notched-at each side and turned over, to form the stop g, which corresponds to the lip d in fig. 1. This pic'ceof meta] may be secured to the inner side or bottom of the socket yby solderor otherwise.- r
I By this simple means ornamental.heads may be attached to nails and screw-s with the greatest facility, and
in thel most economical way possible.
Ifdesired, a' sheath, z, may extend from the socket a to rest upon a portion of the nail or screw.
Having described my invention, I claim as` new,and desire'to secure byLetters-Patent- The attaching of ornamental heads 'to nails and screwsA bymeans of a clamping-recess or groove formed on or attached to'the inner side of the'ornamental head, so as to admit the lateral or transverse insertion ef the l head propel of the nail or screw, substantially as shown and described.
The above specilcation of my inventionsigned by me, this 24th day of January, 1868. T. C. `RICHARDS.
