Abstract

A new and distinct cultivar of Ilex plant named ‘NCIC2’ is disclosed, characterized by its unique upright, narrow growth habit, and persistent, vivid yellow foliage. The new variety is an Ilex, normally produced as an outdoor garden or container plant.

Description

Latin name of the genus and species: Ilex crenata.
Variety denomination: ‘NCIC2’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention comprises a new and distinct Ilex crenata cultivar hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘NCIC2’. This new Ilex crenata was developed through a breeding program at a research nursery, located in Mills River, North Carolina. ‘NCIC2’ was selected from an F3 population of the seed parent, Ilex crenata ‘Sky Pencil’, unpatented, and the pollen parent, llex crenata ‘Golden Gem’, unpatented. The crossing resulting in the new variety was made in 2013. Ilex crenata ‘NCIC2’ was found and selected as an interesting new cultivar within the progeny of the stated cross pollination in 2014 at the same nursery in Mills River, North Carolina.
The first asexual propagation of ‘NCIC2’ occurred in July 2016 by rooting stem cuttings at the same research nursery in Mills River, North Carolina. ‘NCIC2’ roots readily from softwood cuttings treated with a basal dip of 3,000-5,000 ppm indole butyric acid (potassium salt) in water. ‘NCIC2’ was repeatedly reproduced by vegetative cuttings over a seven-year period and has been found to retain its distinctive characteristics through successive asexual propagations.
Date of the first public exposure was on Jun. 27, 2023, in the United States. This was made directly by the inventor or one who obtained the claimed invention directly or indirectly from the inventor. This disclosure and all public disclosures made between Jun. 27, 2023, and the filing of this application fall within the exception allowed under 102(b)(1).
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
‘NCIC2’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with changes in light, temperature, soil and rainfall without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been observed and represent the characteristics of the new cultivar. In combination, these characteristics distinguish ‘NCIC2’ from all other varieties in commerce known to the inventor:
    • 1. Persistent, vivid yellow foliage.
    • 2. Unique narrow, upright habit.
PARENT COMPARISONS
Plants of the new cultivar ‘NCIC2’ are comparable to the seed parent ‘Sky Pencil’, unpatented, in most horticultural characteristics. However, the new variety ‘NCIC2’ differs in the following:
    • 1. Foliage of ‘NCIC2’ is yellow in sun, while foliage of ‘Sky Pencil’ is green.
    • 2. Plants of ‘NCIC2’ are not as tall and wide as plants of ‘Sky Pencil’.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘NCIC2’ are comparable to the pollen parent ‘Golden Gem’, unpatented, in most horticultural characteristics. However, the new variety ‘NCIC2’ differs in the following:
    • 1. ‘NCIC2’ has an upright, narrow habit, whereas ‘Golden Gem’ has a flat-topped, mounded habit.
    • 2. Plants of ‘NCIC2’ are taller and narrower than plants of ‘Golden Gem’.
COMMERCIAL COMPARISON
Plants of the new cultivar ‘NCIC2’ are comparable to the patented, commercial variety Ilex ‘ANNYS1’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 26,997. The two llex varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, the new variety ‘NCIC2’ differs in the following:
    • 1. Foliage of ‘NCIC2’ is more resistant to burning in sun than foliage of ‘ANNYS1’.
    • 2. ‘NCIC2’ has an upright, narrow habit, whereas ‘ANNYS1’ has a low, mounded habit.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS
Foliage and form of ‘NCIC2’ are illustrated by the accompanying photographs. The colors shown are as true as can be reasonably obtained by conventional photographic procedures. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description, which accurately describe the colors of the new llex crenata ‘NCIC2’.
FIG. 1 is a photograph showing the habit of an eight-year-old field-grown plant in fall of 2022, in Mills River, NC.
FIG. 2 is a photograph of the foliage of an eight-year-old field-grown plant in fall of 2022, in Mills River, NC.
DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
