Abstract
‘ARAANTRED5’ is a new and distinctive variety of Anthurium plant which is characterized by the combination of a compact growth habit with an abundance of foliage and inflorescences, relatively small, durable leaves which are dark green and glossy, large, durable spathes with a broad cordate shape and a vibrant red general coloration, and the stability of all characteristics from generation to generation. The new variety is typically produced as an indoor ornamental plant.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species: The Latin name of the genus and species of the novel variety disclosed herein is Anthurium andraeanum Linden ex Andre.
Variety denomination: The inventive variety of Anthurium disclosed herein has been given the variety denomination ‘ARAANTRED5’.
This application claims priority to the Community Plant Variety Rights application number 2016/2991, filed Nov. 30, 2016, which is herein incorporated by reference.
Parentage: The new cultivar is a seedling selection which resulted from the controlled pollination of Anthurium andraeanum ‘K25’ (not patented), the seed parent, and Anthurium andraeanum ‘K20’ (not patented), the pollen parent. Both parents are developed and owned by the inventor and were never commercially released. Said cross was performed by the inventor in De Lier, The Netherlands, in November of 2013. Seeds were harvested from ‘K25’, sown, and grown to maturity in order to evaluate for unique characteristics which may be of commercial value. - 1. Anthurium ‘ARAANTRED5’ exhibits a compact growth habit with an abundance of foliage and inflorescences held at or slightly above the floral plane; and
- 2. Anthurium ‘ARAANTRED5’ exhibits relatively small, durable leaves which are dark green and glossy; and
- 3. Anthurium ‘ARAANTRED5’ exhibits large, durable spathes with a broad cordate shape and a vibrant red general coloration.
The photographs were taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
The following is a detailed botanical description of a new and distinct variety of Anthurium known as ‘ARAANTRED5’, based upon observations made from a sample set of plants grown in 17 cm nursery pots which were approximately 10 month old from a rooted cutting. Those skilled in the art will appreciate that certain characteristics will vary with older or, conversely, with younger plants. ‘ARAANTRED5’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. Where dimensions, sizes, colors and other characteristics are given, it is to be understood that such measurements are approximations or averages set forth as accurately as practicable. The phenotype of the variety may differ from the descriptions set forth herein with variations in environmental, climactic and cultural conditions. Color notations are based on The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, The Royal Horticultural Society, London, sixth edition (2015).
A botanical description of ‘ARAANTRED5’ and comparisons with the parents and the most similar variety of common knowledge are provided below.

- Plant vigor.—Moderately vigorous.
- Growth habit.—Dioecious clump-forming, herbaceous perennial; broad upright.
- Plant shape.—Broad obovate.
- Height.—49.0 cm in height, to the highest leaf; 55.1 cm to top of the floral plane.
- Width.—Average 57.5 cm in width.
- Propagation.—Stem cuttings and meristematic tissue culture.
- Time to initiate roots.—Approximately 30 days to initiate roots at approximately 23 degrees Centigrade.
- Time to produce a finished marketable plant.—Approximately 60 weeks to produce a marketable plant in a 14 cm nursery pot.
- Environmental tolerances.—Adapt to, at least, USDA Zones 10 to 13 and temperatures ranging from as high as 40 degrees Celsius and as low as 5 degrees Celsius; moderate to high tolerance to rain; low tolerance to wind.
- Pest resistance and susceptibility.—Plants have not been observed to be susceptible or resistant to pathogens and pests common to Anthurium.
