CLEANING AND PGLISHING AEPllMiTUS.
lprovenicnt in Cleaning and Polishing Apparatus, of which the o lloWing description, in connection With the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on l.the drawings representin like parts.
My invention is a evice for cleaning andv polishingthel vsurfaces of Wood, metal and other objects, and its particular excellence consists in providing an apparatus capable of absorbing or taking up the dirt, dust, etc., and holding said foreign matter within itself, and yet in such' a-ivay that the vmore or less o ily and otherwise' inflammable body Will not spontaneously ignite, notvvithstandl ing its dense nature which would otherwise be' subject to spontaneous combustion.
In the accompanying drawings, I have' shown lmy invention applied to a mop in Fi ure l, and to a black-board eraser in Fig. .2, lioth of said figures showing the devices in side elevation. Y
It will be understood that my invention is applicable to a Wide range of embodiments,
` being herein illustratedin a, mop l and eraser 2 as a matter of convenience.
When a large mass of fibrous material such as shown, consisting of cotton, Wool, or
v other suitable materials for the purpose, be-
characterf. 'Preferably theportion 8 iscomes more or less impregnated with oily matter it is veryliable to ignite spontaneously, and it is Well knoyvn that tiresfrom this cause are common. iiiccordingl'yI provide the brush, eraser, broom, mop, or other duster or cleaner o-r polisher, with a cleaning or v polishing?l portion 3 consitting `of` aving-a'n oily dus mentor otherwise having anon-combustible formedbyiinpregnating the cotton, Wool, or other fiber with a 'compound' of ra e seed oil and paraiiin oil, the compound eoily exudation, but prese ing verylightly used so as'not'to give any in .sutlicient amount only ,to take up the dust and dirt Speclication of Lettei-siatent. Application inea novemiiervai, iena semi im. atacan.
-absorbff without soiling or smearing in the slightest the object being cleaned oi' polished. lior a mop or heavy article I employ about lli-.002,
of rape-seed oil or other heavy absorbent drying: (includingv sentii-diyinglv vegetable oil, mineral oil, or anima-l oil, with .about of non-spontaneously combustible oil such as paraiiin oil, the proportion oi? the latter being less on lighter articles. The drying oils, including semi-drying oils, when put upon cotton, Wool or cthei-brous combustible material, would 'make the said cotton, Wool or other fibrous material liable to spontaneous combustion, and i prevent 'this lia-bility to spontaneous combustion by first mixing with said drying oils a large proportion of non-spontaneously combustible oils, such as paraiiin. oil.
The impregnated region 3 is at least coextensive with the polishing and cleaning portion of the apparatus, and While it is not necessary or advisable to have the entire article thus constituted, i Wish. it unvdeistoocl that invention is present when the cleaningor polishingv portion et the apparatus is of the naturedescribed, iri'espec- I tive of Whether the remainder of the apparatus is the saine or not.
lHaving described my invention, 'what l', claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the 'United States is:
A cleaning and polishing'apparatus, containing a brous absorbent cleaning and polishing material, having its surface libere rendered suiiiciently oil with a drying oil to absorb finely subdivi ed dirt in the process 'of cleaning `Without liability to soil or render oily the object being cleaned, and inipregnated with a controlling amount of nonspontaneously combustible ingredients rendering the impregnated oily brous material non-spontaneously combustible as a Whole.'
" "in testimony whereof,- I have signedniy naine to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
