MARCUS L. BATTLE, OF BAINBRIDGE, GEGRGIA.
Letters Patent No. 99,050, dated January 25, 1870.
wmf- IMPROVED INSTRUMENT FOR PLUGG-,ING TEETH.
Hiv-
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
T o all whom tt may concern Be it known that I, MARCUS L. BATTLE, of Bainbridge, in the county of Decatur, of the State of Georgia, have invented a new Instrument for Plugging Teeth with amalgam; and I do hereby declare thatl the following is a full and exact description thereof.'
The nature of my invention consists'in providing a steel instrument with three blades, for the purpose of filling teeth with amalgam.
Figure l is a top view;
Figure 2 is a side view; and
Figure 3, a bottom view, in which a b c represent the blades, b b, the concavities in two of the blades, and c, the plugger-point, passing through these concavities, when the side blades are closed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
This instrument, the amalgam-carrier and plugger and combined, is made ot' steel, and has three blades, two of which are lateral, and one horizontal, fastened together by two rivets. One-fourth of each blade is made thin next to the handle, which gives This spring is to keep the blades open. One-third of the end ofthe blade that forms the beak, is made tapering.
The lateral blades are curved at right angles at the point, and so grooved 0n the inside as to form a socket, when closed. y
There is a pivot, which passes through the lateral blades, to keep them steady in position, when pressed together.
The horizontal blade is so tapered -and curved at the point, as to t in the socket formed by the lateral blades.
There is a pivot passing ydown from the horizontal blade, between the lateral blades, which guides the plugger to the socket.
About one-fourth of the middle portion of the blades is file-cut, and also that portion of the handle which rests on the palm ofthe hand.
Teeth to be tilled, should be properly prepared. A suicient quantity of the amalgam should be thoroughly manipulated, and rolled in pellets smaller than the cavity to be lilled, which .are to be placed on the bracket, tra or stand near by.
The instrument should be held in the right hand, resting the handle upon the palm, the lateral blades resting between the thumbj and middle finger, with theforetnger resting on thehorizontal blade or plugger. Then clasp the amalgam pellets with the beak of the lateral blades, and carry to the cavity, and, by the pressure of the foretinger upon the horizontal blade or -plugger, the amalgam will be forcedl into the cavity.
Repeat, until the iilling is complete.
By this method, teeth can be filled with amalgam speedily, effectually, and with satisfaction' to both operator and patient.
yI claim an instrument for plugging teeth, composed of three blades, the two side blades furnished at the points with concavities, through which the plugger of the third blade passes, substantially as described.
