JERSEY, AND GEORGE E. sNoW, or
NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
Leners Patent Ne. 99,870, dead February 15, 1ero.
The Schedule referred` to in these Letters Patent and making part of che same.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Beit known that we, PETER FALARDO, of Newark, Essex county, in the State of N ew Jersey, and GEORGE H. SNOW, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand Clothes -lVasher; and we do hereby declare that theV following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which Will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part ot' this specification, in which- VFigure l isa front view of our improved machine, part being broken away to show the construction.
Figure 2 is a detail longitudinal section of the same, taken through the line x x, lig. 1.
Our invention has for its object to furnish a simple,
which the clothes will be washed by squeezing out the water from the clothes, which `clothes are at once again wet by water from the machine; and
lt consists in the construction and combination of various parts of the machine as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the rubbing surface of the lboard, which may be made of wood or` non-corrosive metal, and should be corrugated or roughened in the ordinary manner.
In the side legs, or in a central leg, B, of the machine, which is made hollow for this purpose, and which may be made out of a solid stick by boring it, is placed the barrel C of a pump.
The barrel C is provided with one or more stationary valves, D, placed above or below, 'or one above and one below the movable valve or piston E, the rod F of which passes up through the upper valve D, when an upper one is used, and through a guide attached to the case of the barrel C.
To the upper end of the piston-rod F is attached a cord, G, which passes over two guide-pulleys, H, pivoted to the upper part of the board. p
To the projecting endv of the cord G is attached a bow, I, to the ends of which are pivoted the ends or handles J of the rubbing roller K.
lThe roller K may be made of wood or rubber, or other elastic material, may be made pla-incr corru-A gated, in one piece or in sections, and cylindrical, or somewhat enlarged in its middle part, as may be desired.
L is a spring coiled around the piston-rod F, between the piston E and upper stationary valve D, or the From 4the upper end of the pumpbarrel .C the water passes through a tube or passage, M, 'to a chamber, N, extending entirely or nearly across the upper end of the board A; and in the lower side of said chamber, just above the face of thev board A, arev formed a series of small holes or slot-s, through which from the clothes. This movement ofthe roller K operates the pump and forces out the water to again Wet the clothes, the pump being so constructed as'to keep the passage M and chamber N always full, so that the least downward movement f t-he roller K will cause an outiow of the water.
Having thus described our invention,
We claim as new, and desire to'secure by Letters Patenty 1. The combination of a pump with a wash-board, when arranged to operate substantially as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the roller JK, cord G, rod F, and spiral spring, with the boa-rd A, as shown and described, for the purpose speciiied. y
3. An improved hand washing-machine formed by the combination of the corrugated board A, hollow leg or legs B, pump-barrel C, stationary valve or valves D, movable piston or valve E, .piston-rod F, cord G, guide-pulleys H, bow I, rubbing roller J K, spring L, passage or tube M, and chamber N, with each other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for` the purpose set forth.
The above specification of our invention signed by us this 31st day of December, 1869.
