IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.

The Schedule referred to in lthese Letters Patent and making part `of the same.

Be it known that I, J. J. KENDALL, of Troys Store, Randolph county, North Carolina, have invented a new and improved NVashiug-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, aud exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled lin the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.

The drawing represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved washing-machine. l

This inventionv relates to a new machine for washing clothes, in which, by means of a system of horizontally-operating plungers, and of vertically-movable slides, the requisite action is produced ou the articles to be washed.

The invention consists chiefly in the construction of said plungers, as will be hereinafter fully described.

To the same are pivoted the upper ends of rods j j, that carry at their lower 'end perforated plates D D,

with roughened surfaces. The surfaces of the 'pressers B, opposite the plates D, are also perforated and roughened, as shown. There is one plate'or slide D opposite to, audin connection with each press B.

As the press moves toward its slide, said slide is drawn up, and thereby rolls the clothes that are between -B and D, while the same are being pressed.

The shoulder b, and a friction-roller, t, serve as guides' for the slides D.

The water which rushes out from ybehind the slide,

when the presser is withdrawn, throws the clothes somewhat.' away from the slide, to allow the same to lmove down without diiculty.

The 'friction-roller i serves, also, to stay the slides, y

while the clothes are .pressed against them. Having thus described my invention,
