IMPROVBD WASHING-MACHINE.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patentand making part of the same.

To all who-m it may concern f Beit known that I, OsoAii SBURGns, Sr., of the city of Battle Greek, in the county of Calhoun, and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Confibined Water-Heating, Steam-Generating, and Wasliing-Ilachincs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. y

This invention relates to that class of clothes-wasliing machines having a slatted cylinder, into' which the clothes Vare placed while the cylinder is suspended vwithin a reservoir or chamber of hot Water and steam, the requisite heat being supplied by means of afii'e underneath. y'

The nature of this invention consists-.- i

First, in providing the cylinder withsiatsthat shall offer the least possible resistance to the free passage of the largest quantity of water between them, those slatsbeing placed at an angle of about forty-tive degrees from a line drawn perpendicnlaily through the center of the ends of the cylinder, one-half ot' these slats standing in one, and the other half inthe opposite direction throughout the entire circumference of the cylinder, vso that when it is rotated or given a reciprocating movement, the water is gathered in or lifted up and directed toward the centre of the cyliiider, and thereby brought into contact with all its conheater, applicable to the various culinary, bath-room, y and other purposes for which Steamers are ordinarily used. l

Fourth, in the peculiar `construction and -a'rr'angement oi the' various parts comprising the machine,

steam-generator, and washing-machine is combinedin one apparatus.

In order to enable those skilled in the artito make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its peculiar construction and operation.

l A, iig. l, represents a rectangular box or reservoir, supported by four posts or legs, giving the Whole a convenient elevation, and provided with an outletpipe and faucet, c, iig. 1, near its bottom, for the pui'- pose of drawing off the water. The bottoniof the reservoir is made of sheet metal, copper being preferred, while its sides and ends should be lined, either partially or wholly, with any suitable metal.

On the inside of this reservoir 'or chamberu A, at suitable points for permitting the cylinder to revolve without touching the bottom of the chamber, and 0n either side of the same, are placed rests for the axis of the cylinder, one side of the box A being pierced at this point for the insertion of the shaft of the crank d into the surface opening provided in the end of the cylinder for the purpose of revolving the same.

B represents thesla-tted cylinder, the manner of its construction being clearly shown in fig. L3.

`The slats a, composing the circumference of the cylinder, I prefer tolinake of Zinc or copper, but they may hc made of any other material. They are placed at `an angle of about forty-five degrees from aline drawn perpendicular to the center of the cylinder, with about every six of the slats standing in opposite directions, or the one-eighth part of the whole number in one, followed by an equal proportion inthe opposite di rectioii The slats may be attached to the heads or ends of the cylinder by means of nails, or they may lslide in grooves cut in the heads for that purpose, and the heads and several parts iirmly and securely held together by means of the stay-rods b, Iig. 3, the latter being provided with suitable shoulders on theirinner, and tlanges on their outer ends, through which and into the ends ot' the rods screws m pass for that purpose. O represents a sheet-iron tire-box, open at top, iig. 2,

and pifovidedwitli suitable flanges and other means for. instantly attaching it to the under surface of the sheet p met-al bottom of the box A, the bottom of the latter serving, also, for the top ot' the re-box. A pipe in the rear end of the fire-box serves to secure a draft for the iirc by conveying the products of combustion upward' and wherever desired.

I) represents a cover for the chamber A, fitting its top nicely, and provided with a flange on its inner side, extending downward, for the purpose of retaining the condensation of the steam and vapor within the reservoir.

VAn outlet-pipe, d, with faucet f, is provided to this cover, for the purpose of retaining .the steam Within the chamber, or discharging it therefrom whenever desiicd.

A platform, h, is attached to the legs on the side of the box A, by means of bolts or screws 1 2, forming joints, so as to admit of the platformbeing folded up against the side of the reservoir when not in use.

The platform is for a stand or rest, on which to place any vessel containing water to be heated or substance to be steamed, the steam being conducted thereto by stantly changing their position, while-the peculiar bucket-swiped slats gather up the water and direct it into the cylinder and toward its centre, so-that a curl rent of the hottest water in the l'eservoir is being constantly brought into forcible contact with the clothes, the peculiar form and arrangement of the slats. in this machine being such as to offer the least possible resistance to the free and full ingress of the water to the interior of the cylinder throughout its whole length, whether the same is revolved in the one orthe other direction, inasmuch as one-half of all the slats are constantly acting in the way and manner described.

If, while washing with this machine, or at any time, We desire to heat water or steam any substance contained in another vessel, all we have to do is to place the vessel on the platform h, attach one end of the movable pipe (l to the faucet in the cover D, placing its opposite end beneath the surface of the water Yin the vessel, open the faucet, and the heating of the water is very expeditiously accomplished, caused by the condensation ofthe steam thrown off from the chamber A. Hot water may also be at any time obtained direct from the vreservoir in the usual wellknown manner, by means of the faucet in its bottom.

In addition to the advantages already seen to be secured by the use of this machine, may be mentioned the following, viz: It is a very cheaply constructed, perfectly portable and durable water-heater andsteamgenerator, quickly put up in any locality where wanted, for heating water for bath-room or any other purpose, while it is so constructed iu separate parts that each part may be instantly detached from the rest ofthe machine, and, hence, cheaply repaired or renewed Without incurring the cost of constructing anentirely new machine throughout.

Disclaimer.

I do not claim, broadly, the use'of slats in the cylinders of revolving washing-machines; nor do I clai'm the device of beveling the edge of the slats, where such beveled edges do not extend throughout the entire length of the slats, or where one part of each slat is beveled in one direction'and the other is beveled in the opposite direction, as in the Bisbee machine, patented August 14, 1866; nor when, as in that machine, the slats occupy the greater portion of the circumference ofthe cylinder;v nor when the dipping surfaces of such beveled slats are confined to one-half of the length of the slats; but

What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the'United States, is-
