Description

` lowing is a full, clear,
auna-sten j @we eine WILLIAM HARTILL LAW, 0F BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
`Lehm Patent No. 103,059, daad May 17, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT STEAM-GENERATORS.
The Schedule referred to in these LettersPatent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM HARTILLf LAW, of Birmingham, iu the county of' Warwickshire, England, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Stearn-Boile1s; and I do hereby declare that the foland Vexact description thereof, which will .enablcothers skilled in the art to make and luse the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw'ingsforining part of this specification.
vThis invention relates'to a novel method of coustrncting steamboilers, whereby the steam-generating surface is greatly increased, a full and free circulation of water is secured, and ythe strength of the `boileriu- 4creased.
'Ihe invention consists in securing, immediately above the fire-ehamber, any-suitable number of dat', radiating water-tubes, constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described. f
In the accompanying plate of drawings- Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of a steam boiler, constructed according to my invention.
llgure 2 is ahorizontal section ot' lig. 1, through the line :t x, showing thev form and arrangement of the tubes.
J Similar letters` of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the outer shell of the boiler;
G represents an annular `space around the inner' shell D, which forms `the water and steam-space of the boiler.
`E represents the at radiating water-tubes, which tions,.in the tubes.
through the inner space j, as indicated by the arrow. A
K represents the steam-space of the boiler, and L the door for the introduction of the fuel.
The smoke and products of combustion pass upinto the central tube of chimney N, between the tubesvE,
which makes the entire out-er surface of those tubes steam-generating surface.
The outer shell A is secured ,steam-tight around the ilne N, as seen at o, while the base' of that ilue rests on the conical end of the inner shell i It will be seen that-the conical portion of the inner i, shell, and also the' tlue, are contained in` the steam space K, so thatV the temperature of the steam .is
raised by its contact with those heated surfaces, and,
consequently, dried or superheated before beingused.`
The circulation-plates may be permanently attached to the tubes E, or suspended therein.
In the former ease they may be made to act as stays,
and thus obviate the necessity of bolt-stays, as seen Aat pp, g.,2. The'tnbes themselves act' as stays to the interior shell D. y
Having thus described my invention,
lI claim as new and desire to secure `by Letters Patent- In combination with the steam-generator A, the Hat, open water-tubev E, constructed and arranged substantially as `shown and described. 1
f W.' H. LAW.
