To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK E. Hor- KINS, residing at Sterling, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Umbrella-Carrier, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in that class of holders or carriers, more particularly designed to be removably connected with the wearing apparel, as a waist, belt or the like, and adapted to receive an umbrella or parasol to securely hold the same clamped to the body of the user, while shopping.

My invention comprehends an improved construction of device for the purposes stated formed of a single piece of stout spring wire and having a member for suspending from and attaching it to the dress, belt or other desired part of the Wearing apparel, and other parts that form a receiver or sheath for sustaining the ferrule end of the umbrella or parasol and for securely clamping or holding the same when inserted.

In its more subordinate features my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, all of which will be hereinafter fully eX- plained, and specifically pointed out in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1, is a perspective view that illustrates the manner in which my invention is used. Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the same with the end of the umbrella clamped and held thereby. Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the holder, the clamping end being at the spread position.

The primary object of my invention is to provide a device for the purpose hereinbef-ore mentioned of a very cheap and simple character of neat appearance and to that end the same is bent to shape from a single strand of stout spring wire. The wire 1 is bent midway its length to form a spring loop 10 and the two ends extend from the loop to form opposing members 11, whose tension is toward each other. At the lower end each member 11 is bent horizontally, then vertically and then horizontally in a plane parallel with the lower horizontal portion, and the free ends of the wire 1 are then bent and clenched over the members 11, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, by reference to which, it will be seen by bending the lower ends of the members 11 and curving the bent portions inwardly a pair of opposing elongated concaved clamping members ab are provided, which in connection with the members 11-11 form a skeleton sheath for the reception of the ferrule end of the umbrella, see Fig. 1, it being also obvious that as the body of the parasol or umbrella is forced down into the sheath the tension of the members 11 effects the clamping and holding of the umbrella or parasol.

3 designates a slip loop of wire, the ends of which are bent into eyes 30 for engaging the members 11 to hold them from becoming accidentally spread from the normal condition, and also to serve as a binder for forcing and holding the clamping sheath tightly against the umbrella, such action being effected by sliding the member 3 down on the members 11.

From the foregoing taken in connection with the drawings of my invention and the manner in which it can be readily attached to and supported from the users apparel will be readily apparent.

The hanger 4 which may be a chain, strap or other member is connected with or passed through the spring loop or eye of the holder and the ends detachably secured to and hung from the waistband or belt.

By reason of forming a clamping device or carrier of a single piece of wire bent upon itself and having its ends formed into long sheath like portions, provision is made for gripping the umbrella handle at a plurality of points and in such manner that the said handle is held suspended in a vertical position, see Fig. 1, and against dangling about the body as is usually the case when the umbrella handle is clamped or gripped at one point only.

By the use of my invention the user is enabled to secure the umbrella, parasol or the like to the person, in such manner that it will not be in the way or possibility of the same being stolen.

What I claim is:

1. A device of the character stated formed of a single strand of spring wire bent up to form a central spring loop and oppositely disposed spring side arms, the lower end of each of the said arms being bent up to form a plurality of opposing clamping portions, the ends of each of the said clamping portions being bent and clenched around their respective side arms.

2. A device of the character described consisting of a single strand of spring Wire bent midway its ends into a spring loop, said wire adjacent to its ends being bent to form clamping members each of which consists of a bottom and a top semicircular portion and a pair of vertical portions connecting said semicircular portions, the ends of said Wire being coiled around the arms formed by said wire between said clamping l0 portions and said spring loop and a Wire member having its ends looped around said arms substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
