To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JANE H. POLHEMUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dobbs Ferry, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding Keys, Handkerchiefs, and Similar Articles, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to devices for holding keys, handkerchiefs, and similar articles; and it has particular relation to that class of devices which are adapted to be attached to a womansdress and conveniently retain such articles in suspended position.

My invention has for its object to provide a simple and improved device of this character which can be conveniently worn and which will be inexpensive, easily operated, and serve to effectively retain such articles against loss or displacement.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same letters and numerals of reference in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a device embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is an end or edge elevation thereof.

In practice my invention comprises a frame formed of an upper and lower member slidably connected together and spring-actuated, as will be hereinafter fully described. These members are respectively preferably formed of a single piece of wire bent into shape.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, 1 designates the upper frame, which is bent from a single piece of wire to form a bottom cross-bar a, having eyes or loops b at its ends, from which rise parallel side bars 0 0, one of which is provided at its top with a re taining-loop, as at (I, while at the top of the other side bar a is provided a loop 6, from which is extended a pin-bar f, adapted to engage the loop d like an ordinary safety-pin. The wire of the frame is continued from the loop 0? across to and engaged with the loop 6 to form a cross-bar g, which is practically comprised in the safety-pin body, and from this cross-bar is extended downwardly and upwardly a central hook member h.

In the practical construction of the wire frame 1 of a single piece of wire one end of the wire will form the pin f, from whence it is bent to form the loop 6, and thence downwardly to form the side bar 0 and bottom loop I), thence across to form the bottom cross-bar a and loop b, and thence upwardly to form the other side bar 0 and the loop d, and thence across and downwardly and upwardly and again across to form the hook it and the crossbar 9, its terminal end being then engaged with the loop 6, as shown. The lower frame 2 is likewise formed of a single piece of wire bent to produce the side bars 2' 2', having eyes or loops is at their upper ends, which embrace and are adapted to slide upon the side bars 0 of the frame 1. These side bars 2' also pass through the bottom eyes or loops b of the frame 1 and are from thence bent outwardandconvergently inwardly, as at m and 02, respectively, and at the bottom of the frame 2 is centrally provided a downwardly-projecting loop or arm, as at 0, which will serve as a convenient suspension device for various articles and which also operates as a handle by which the lower frame 2 may be pulled downwardly in the operation of the device, as hereinafter described.

. In the practical construction of the lower frame 2 from a single piece of wire the central portion of the wire will be bent to form the depending loop or arm 0, from which its ends are respectively bent outwardly and upwardly to form the portions m, n, i, and k.

The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. The device is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction and can be conveniently used for the safe suspension and retention of various articles. For instance, a set of keys maybe suspended from the hook h, and by pulling downwardly upon the lower frame 2 it can be drawn down upon the frame 1 against the (em sion of the springs 3 to permit of the inser= tion of a handkerchief within the large bottom loop formed by the frame members a, m, and a, when by releasing the lower frame the ten claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A suspension device of the class described,comprising an upper and a lower member, said upper member being provided with means for attachment to the dress of a user and provided with parallel side bars, the lower member being provided with side bars slidably connected with the side bars of the upper member, a spring element interposed between the lower ends of the side bars of the upper member, and the upper ends of the side bars of the lower member, said side bars of said upper member being connected at their lower ends by a cross-bar, in connection with which said lower member operates to clamp a handkerchief, substantially as shown and described.

2. A suspension device of the class described, comprising an upper and a lower member, each of which consists of a single length of wire, said members being provided with tensional means for normally retaining them in a position to clamp a handkerchief between them, said tensional means normally forcing said lower member upward, the wire of which said upper member is composed being formed into a pin-bar and into a depending hook from which an article may be suspended, and the wire of which the lower member is composed being formed into a downwardly-directed looped portion, which serves as an operating member, substantially as shown and. described.

A device of the class described, comprising two members each of which is composed of a single length of wire, the wire forming the upper member being bent to form a bottom cross-bar at having eyes or loops 5 at its ends which terminate in upwardly-directed side bars 0 c, one of which is provided at its upper end with a retaining-loop d the upper end of the other side bar 0 being provided with a loop e from which is projected a pinbar f arranged to engage the loop d, said wire of said upper member being projected from the loop d transversely to engage with the loop 6 forming a cross-bar g and a hook member 72 said lower frame member consisting of a wire, bent to produce side bars 2' 2' having eyes or loops 79 at their upper ends which embrace and slide upon the side bars c, said side bars 2' also passing through the bottom loops 3) and bent outwardly and convergently in wardly at their lower ends as at m, 'n, and looped at the bottom portion of the lower frame as at o.
