STOVE-LID OR COAL-HOLE COVER.
Application iled March 9,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of fest Pittston, county of Luzerne, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Lids or Coal-Hole Covers, of which the following is a full and clear speciiication, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of my improved cover or lid; Fig. 2 an edge elevation thereof partly in section; Fig. 3 a vertical section through one of the hinges; Fig. l an under perspective view of one of the hinged pintles.
The object of this invention is to so con struct the lid that a portion or section of it may be removed or partly opened, without removing the entire lid, to enable coal to be put on the fire or the lire to be dampered, the connections between the two sections of the lid being such that they shall be concealed from view and be protected from the iire and also be prevented from being locked by expansion of the interlocking parts, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing, a designates the main or stationary part of the lid and b the hinged or movable section thereof, this latter section being preferably smaller than the main or stationary section and the two adjacent edges of the sections being arranged to closely abut clear across the lid and the movable section being provided with the usual lifter-hole c.
Depending from the under side of the section near the edge where it adjoins the other section is a pair of pins (l which curve downwardly and inwardly and are each provided with one or more notches e in its under, convex side. These pins d are adapted to enter sockets f depending from the lower side of the section a and projecting outwardly therefrom in order to under-lie the movable section b. These sockets are closed except at their upper faces at the point where the pins el enter. Depending into Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents Specification of Letters Patent.

each socket is a lug g which extends outwardly and under-lies the adjacent edge of the section Z) and has its lower face mounted to approximately correspond with the curvature of the pin CZ.
It will be observed that the sect-ion b may be swung upwardly in the manner of a hinged plate and that when it is raised to an upright or nearly upright position the pins (Z will pass out of the sockets and permit the bodily removal of the section Should it be desired to only partly open the section it may be raised until one pair of the notches e engage the front corner L of the sockets, whereupon the lid will be locked in its partly raised position. It will be observed that this device will avoid the necessity of removing and re-seating the entire lid when it is desired to put coal on the fire or to damper the fire, and it will be further observed that the hinged connections will be entirely concealed and also that they will be protected from the direct flames of the tire. It will be understood also that the fit of the part-s need not be so tight or close as to cause any trouble from locking by eXpansion of the metal.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A stove vlid consisting of two sections and means whereby they are detachably hinged together, said means consisting of a pair of sockets on one of the sections and a pair of depending inwardly-curved pins on the other section, the under curved surface of each of said pins being provided with one or more notches adapted to engage an adjacent edge of its socket-entrance, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afIiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses. THOMAS H. EDWARDS. Witnesses:
