Description

uted tetee JOHN H.' BALSLEY, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 99,622, dated February 8, 1870.
IMPROVED BRACKET-HINGE FOR LADDERS.
The Schedulexefen'ed to in these Ietters Patent and making part of the name To all whom it may concern laddertherewith; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the let-ters ot' reference'marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a metal bracket for the support of the t-op step on a ladder, and for the forming of a joint for the 'leg of the same, all as more fully hereinafter described.
-To enable others skilled in the a-rt to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it, and the manner of using it.
I construct a metal bracket, in design like Figure 1, with two arms, A and B. Through the points of these arms are holes, for the reception of screws, to attach it to the top step.
There is also a hole at the centre, c, for the reception of a large screw, which passes through the bracket and leg, into the head-piece under the top, as shown in the drawing.
The points D D, Figure 2, are driven into the side and head-piece, to give additional permanency to that of the screws.
The recess under the face of the bracket is shaped so as to allow the end of the leg to move free in the proper direction, the hole through which the large screw passes being of sufficient distance from the end of the leg to give the requisite strength, without any metallic or other attachment.
Figure 2 is anrend View of bracket.
Figure 3 represents a full-drawn ladder, with bracket-hnge in place, and attached is leg E, thus forming a bracket and hinge of one piece of metal..
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim, and desire 'to secure by Letters Patent, is
A metal bracket,.constructed,as described, to form al support for a ladder-top, and a joint for the leg, without the use. of any attachment to said leg or support.
