JOHN H. CATO, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
ATTACHMENT FOR GAS-FIXTURES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. CATO, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Attachment for Gas-Fixtures, of which the following is a full, clear, and ex act description.
My invention relates to an attachment for gas fixtures, which is adjustable thereon, and which offers a suit-able support for a number of brackets carrying smoke bells at their outer ends.
The object of my invention is to provide an article of the class described, which is capable of adjustment on the gas fixture, so that the smoke bells may be suspended in any desired position.
Another object of the invention is to provide an article of this class, which consists of two parts only, each of the parts being easily formed, and when secured together tending to provide an article that will be neat in appearance, reliable in the purpose for which it was made, and which may be disposed of at a small price.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cooperating attachment for a gas fixture and an adjustable arm which is adapted to support a smoke bell. The means of connection between the fixture and the arm, is such that the arm may be placed in any desired position, or any number of arms may be supported by the attachment and placed in any desired position thereon, thereby adapting the device to gas fixtures which are provided with a plurality of burners.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the description of the invention proceeds.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gas fixture comprising two burners and having my attachment applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the attachment, showing the adjustable arms for carrying the smoke bells attached thereto; Fig. 3 is a sectional view of Fig. 2, on the line 33; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the attachment.
My invention comprises a device made up of an inner member 1 and an outer concentric member 2. The inner member is preferably made of a single strip of metal, and

comprises a central circular portion 3 and arms -11 and extending therefrom. The arm 5 is made up of the coextensive parts as shown in Fig. 2, and these parts are spread at their outer ends, thereby providing a portion 7. A downwardly-extending integral part 8 from the portion 7 is attached to the outer concentric member 2 by any suitable means, such as rivets 6. The arm at is made up of the parallel portions 9 and 10, which are provided with integral downward portions 11 and 12, slightly offset from each other in order to embrace the inwardly-turned ends 13 and 1 1 of the outer concentric member 2, each pair of the four ends being secured together by any suitable means, such as a rivet 15, whereby the device may be opened out. The outer concentric member 2 is made up of the circular strip as shown, and is attached to the inner member 1 by the downwardly-extending part 8 at one end, and between the down-turned portions 11 and 12 at the opposite end.
The central circular portion 3 of the inner member 1 is intended to engage the vertical member 15 of a gas fixture 16. To the end that my attachment may be secured to fixtures having parts of varying sizes, I have provided the member 1 of the attachment with locking means 17 and 18, each of which comprises a screw and nut, whereby the pairs of arms 4 and 5 may be drawn to gether with the circular portion 3 tightly gripping the part 15 of the gas fixture.
The adjustable arm carrying the smoke bell 23 at its outer end, comprises a rod 20, telescoping into an arm 19, which is provided with a longitudinal recess 21 for this purpose. The outer end of the rod is provided with a hook 22 for suspending the bell, and by reason of the construction shown, the bell may be moved varying distances from the fixture part 15. The inner end of the arm 19 is provided with a lug 2%, having a recess 27 extending partly therethrough on the arc of a circle, whereby the arm may be secured to the outer concentrio member 2 at any portion thereof. By reason of this construction, any desired number of arms may be attached to the member 2, no change in the construction shown being necessary when the gas fixtures are provided with different numbers of burners.
By removing the screws and nuts 17 and 18, the two halves of the attachment may be opened out, the center of the movement being approximately the rivet 6, and the device may be slipped on the gas fixture, as shown in Fig. 1. WVhen it has been brought to the proper height thereon, the screws and nuts are secured in place and the device is ready to receive the desired number of arms 19, through the medium of the recess 27 in each of them.
From the above, it will be seen that I have provided an efiicient and simple device of the class described, and one that is adapted for use on gas fixtures of varying sizes and with diiferent numbers of burners.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination of an attachment for a gas fixture and a supporting means for a smoke bell, the attachment comprising concentric members, the inner one of which is adapted for connection to the fixture and the outer one for supporting the arm carrying the smoke bell, and arms extending between the concentric members and connected therewith, the end of the first-named arm being provided with a recess, the walls of which engage the outer concentric mem ber, whereby the said arm may be moved to any desired position on the outer concentric member.
2. An attachment for gas fixtures, comprising an inner member consisting of a strip doubled upon itself, the sides of the strip being bent outward intermediate the ends thereof to fit over the fixture, screws passing through the doubled portion of the strip for clamping the strip on the fixture, an outer member formed from a strip bent into circular form and connected with the inner member and arranged below the same, and telescoping arms for engagement with the outer member, each arm having a head at its inner end, the head being slotted to fit over the outer member.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
