To all whom it may concern:

in separable Squares, of which the-following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in separable squares, the object of the invention being to provide an improved construction of members comprising the separable square, whereby they may be securely held when together, but readily separated when desired.

A further object is to provide a square of this character of simple, inexpensive construction, strong and durable in use.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a plan view illustrating my improved square. Fig. 2, is a plan View showing the members of the square separated, the graduations of the scale being omitted in this view. Fig. 3, is a view in section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4:, is an end elevation of the member 1 of the square taken on the line 14 of Fig. 2.

1 and 2 represent the two members of the square which are both preferably of metal, but I am not limited in the material used.

Member 1 is provided in one end with a central longitudinal recess 2 which, at its inner end, is connected by a restricted neck 3 with a circular finger opening 1, one wall of said neck 3 being at an angle as illustrated at 5, for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. This recess 2 in member 1 is adapted to receive a tongue 6 on member 2 and at right angles to the latter, and spaced a distance from the end of member 2 equal to the distance between the wall of recess 2 and the edge of member 1.

Tongue 6 is provided at opposite side edges and on a portion of one end, with flanges 7 adapted to fit in grooves 8 in the walls of recess 2, when the tongue 6 is forced into the recess. On the inner end of tongue 6, a spring catch 9 is secured by screws 10. This spring catch is provided with a shoulder 11, and a finger grip 12 at its extreme end. \Vhen the tongue 6 is entered in the recess 2, and moved longitudinally thereof, the shoulder 11 will engage the wall 5 of the neck portion 3, and be forced backward by the cam action of said wall until the tongue is entered within the recess 2, when the shoulder 11 will spring into the circular finger hole and securely lock tongue (3 in recess 2.

lVhen it is desired to separate the member, the finger is inserted in the hole 4 to press back the spring catch 9 and allow the members to be separated. Recess 2 is formed by means of two tongues 13, and let respectively, the former appreciably longer than the latter as shown. The longer tongue 13 is notched or recessed as shown at 15 to receive a short tongue 16 on the end of member 2, and inside of this tongue 16, member 2 is recessed as shown at 17, and provided with a flange 18 to enter a recess or groove 19 in the extreme end and inner portion of the tongue 13. Member 2 at the inner edge of tongue 6, is provided with a shallow recess 20 to receive the end of tongue 14, and a flange 21 is provided in this recess 20 to engage in groove 22 in the end of tongue 14.

It will be noted that when the members are securely locked together by means of the spring catch 9, not only is member 2 held against any movement longitudinally of member 1, but member 1 is held against any movement longitudinally of member 2, and the members are securely held against any pivotal lateral or wabbling movement whatever relative to each other, but have a fixed relation at an exact right angle to each other.

Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what. I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a separable square, the combination of two members, one of said members having a longitudinal central recess in one end, the inner end of said recess connected by a restricted neck with a finger opening, a tongue on the other member constructed to fit said recess, a spring catch on the end of said tongue adapted to be passed through said neck and engage the wall of said finger open ing, and said tongue and recess having interlocking flanges and grooves, substantially as described.

2. In a separable square, the combination of two members, one of said members having a longitudinal central recess in one end, the inner end of said recess connected by a restricted neck with a finger opening, a tongue on the other member constructed to fit said recess, a spring catch on the end of said tongue adapted to be passed through said neck and engage the wall of said finger opening, said tongue and recess having interlocking flanges and grooves, tongues of different lengths at opposite sides of the recess, said longer tongue notched at an angle, and said member having the first mentioned tongue recessed at opposite sides of said tongue to receive the two tongues forming the first-mentioned recess, substantially as described.

3. In a separable square, the combination of two members, one of said members having a longitudinal central recess in one end, the lnner end of sald recess connected by a restricted neck with a finger opening, a tongue on the other member constructed to fit said recess, a spring catch on the end of said tongue adapted to be passed through said neck and engage the wall of said finger opening, said tongue and recess having interlocking flanges and grooves, tongues of different lengths at opposite sides of the recess, said longer tongue notched at an angle, said memher having the first-mentioned tongue recessed at opposite sides of said tongue to re VALENTINE C.
