residing at Liverpool, in the county of Lam caster, in the Kingdom of .Englanchhave invented ertain new and useful Improve ments in lat-Pin Guards or Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention has for its object to provide an improved form of protector applicable to the ends of ladies hat pins on which it will be held securely, while at the same time it will prevent the hat pin to which it is applied From falling out of the hat when in use.

With this object in view the device according to the present invention includes a, hat pin guard or protector of any suitable shape, to which is applied a block of india rubber or like elastic material through which the hat-pin is passed, the said block being held in place by a cap which can be screwed inward in order to compress the elastic material toward the center and thus to cause it to grip or engage the hat pin more securely, while also taking up or allow-- ing for the wearing away of the elastic material at the central part where the hat pin passes tln'ough it.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in one Form of construo tion, which indicates the preferred embodiment thereof.

In the drawing, a is a block of any suit able material made in any desired shape 2 for instance that oil. a spear head, with a longitudinal hole formed in it.

Z) is a piece of indiarubber or like elastic material suital'ily held in the open end ot the block a. In the example shown the rubber piece 6 is held between two cup-shaped members c and (Z, which are adapted to be pressed together by means of a screw cap r. This cap screws on'the end of the block a and is indented or coned inwardly as shown, to form a guide which will direct the point of the hatpin toward the hole at the center.

In the drawing the hat pin 7', a portion of which is shown, is inserted in the device; the cap a has been screwed inwardly so as to compress the rubber 6 around the stem of the pin by forcing together the cups (Z and c which preferably fit one within the other as shown. The rubber is thus caused to grip the hat pin firmly and to hold the block a thereon. This block therefore serves as a guard for the hat pin by covering the end thereof, and it also prevents any risk of the hat pin falling out.

The cap (1 may either be screwed up and released each time that the hat pin guard is put on and taken otl respectively, or it may be screwed up sulliciently to compress the rubber piece 0 to the required extent and then the pin may be thrust through the rnbbcr each time that. the guard is used, the cap 1: being; only screwed up occasionally when required to press the rubber inwardly a little more when it; wears away.

There may be a ring or staple /L attached to the block a or the cap (2 it required, to form an attachment for a light chain or cord by which the guard can be connected to a hat and held thereon when out of use.

The device is adapted for being made as an ornamental article, the block a being of any valuable metal or material mounted with precious stones or otherwise as desired, and allthc wearing parts can be readily replaced it they become worn out.

The invention is not limited to the exact constructirm illustrated but the essential fea ture is the use of the pin guard containing a piece of india-rubber or other suitable elastic material which can be pressed inward by an adjustable screw cap in order to i11 sure that the material will adequately engage with the pin when thrust. through the hole in the device.

We declare that what we claim is:--

1. A hat pin guard or protector comprising a block of elastic material, two members adapted to inelose said block between them, said members being formed to screw one upon the other and one of said members being perforated to permit the passage of a hat pin tlwrcthrough. combim-d with two men'rbers lorated within said first named members and surrounding the block of classtie material, said last two members being adapted to be movedom: on the other by said first named nfcmbers for compressing the elastic material against the hat .pin, as the first named members are screwed" to gether.

2. A hat pin guard or protector comprising a block of elastic material, two cupshaped elements formed in such a manner as to embrace the block of elastic material from opposite sides thereof, and two membe:- adapted to inelose between them the cup-shaped elements and the block of elas tie material, ene of said members being adapted to screw upon the other whereby the cup-shaped elements may be pressed to gather compressing the block of elastic ma terial toward the center, one of said members and the cup-shaped elements being peri l I i 1 I eeee'm formed to permit, the mssnae Umrehhrough of a hat pin.
