Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LILLY MAY MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at I-Iillsboro, in the county of Highland and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pins, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to hat pins, the object of the invention being to provide a device adapted to be applied to the point of the pin to protect the same and'to prevent its protruding from the side of the hat when in use and to provide means for firmly holding the pin and the device operatively associated with each other.

In the drawing forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1 is a side view of a hat pin illustrating the attachment of the protector thereto; Fig. 2 is a section on an enlarged scale through the protector; and

3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 2.

The pin herein illustrated may be of the usual well known construction, being provided at one end with a point 2 and at its opposite end with a head 3.

The protecting device comprises a tapered sleeve 4, which is split in its main length, as at 5, so that portions thereof at diametrically opposite points may be adjusted relatively in a manner to be hereinafter ex plained. The small end of the sleeve has its walls inturned, so as to form a relatively flared entrance mouth 6 to facilitate the operation of insertingthe point of the pin in the sleeve. The sleeve has arranged therein an elastic element which comprises identical springs 7, which are provided with bowed or curved intermediate portions 8,-

which are yieldingly engaged against each other axially of the sleeve normally. At a point inwardly of the bowed portions 8, the springs are curved outwardly and engaged terminally at 9 with the inner walls of the sleeve andat points immediately behind the mouth 6, the surfaces 10 of the portions 9 being gradually curved into the bowed portions 8, as shown. At the opposite end, the springs are curved outwardly andthey terminally contact at 11 with the inner walls of the Sleeve, so that under the inherent action of both springs, the portions 8 will be properly held in mutual contact with each other. An actuating device 12 is interiorly threaded and adjustable on a corresponding portion 13 of the sleeve 4 and is adapted to be adjusted in the length of the sleeve, so as to compress portions thereof against the terminals of the springs 7, so as to regulate the pressure of one of the bowed portions 8 with the other portion. The actuating device 12 is provided with branch arms 14,

which form retaining means for an ornamental head 15, the. latter being disposed at the large end of the sleeve;

Now that the details of the device have been fully described, it is evident that when the point of the pin is inserted into the sleeve 4 axially thereof it will be compelled to pass between the intermediate gripping portions 8 of the spring, whereby to be positively held thereby. In this manner the device is held against accidental displacementfrom the point while the latter is efiectually housed, as will be understood.

I claim:

A hat pin protector comprising-a tapered sleeve having intermediate threaded portions, the said sleeve being split longitudinally to points through and slightly beyond said threaded portion, whereby the major part of the sleeve is rendered yieldable, an elastic'elementlocated in the sleeveand comprising oppositely-disposed springs, each having end portions yieldably engaged against the inner walls of the sleeve and intermediate portions extended away from said inner walls of the sleeve and disposed in axial alinement with the sleeve, and an actuating device interiorly threaded to receive the threaded portion of the sleeve and adjustable on said portion whereby the walls of the sleeve will be compressed radially to regulate the contacting pressure of the intermediate portions of the springs.
